I just finished my first listen to this album.  Well, up to Out of Reach was in the car, the rest on my PC.  Even though it was only a single listen, I was actually very impressed.  I had ZERO expectations for this and the first three songs didn't rock me.  The opener works very well actually and I like it more now I have the album.

Paralyzed sounds fucking great and heavy in the car, that's a solid tune.  Fall Into the Light I just don't get.  The structure is all over the place and the song itself seems very incohesive.  Maybe more listens will fix that.  The first minute is killer.  Barstool Warrior I liked too.  Has that Rush feel DT like to go for and even sounded a bit old school DT at times to me.  Room 137 is weird and original as fuck.  Can't remember much from it yet but kudos for the band doing something different.

S2N might be my fav on first listen.  Heavy, great melodic chorus, JP putting in one amazing solo and really just the band killing it on all fronts.  Love this one.  TDEN ending made me laugh, but I dig it.  At Wit's End is also probably going to be a fav.  Can't remember much, but the ending is brilliant.  Out of Reach seems like a great ballad with a nice structure.  Pale Blue Dot seems to deliver the goods but I need to crank this one in the car.  Viper King made me laugh, thank fuck this is a bonus track.  I'm kind of wishing I got the standard edition without this song.

I'll listen to this one a bit.  The Astonishing was one of the biggest pieces of shit that one of my favourite bands has dished up and I almost disowned DT because of it.  It still hurts.  Having no expectations for this one will help but this is a heavy ass fucking cool album.  You know what it seems like that I like?  It's the band doing whatever they feel and not doing music that people expect.  Nothing over 10 minutes, no endless Outcry style wanking, no piano based puke inducing ballads, original pieces and just doing things a bit different.  Not following any structures or stereotypes here and the band just being creative without limits.

I could be wrong also, but I think At Wit's End and Pale Blue Dot should swap places, seems obvious.

I can’t remeb DT ever really doing a bluesy tune like Room 137 before. I like it.
Thought you would like the bonus track Kade. It rocks.

I liked the intro a lot, but the rest seemed pretty cheesy, just different I guess.  I will crank it in the car tomorrow.

I also picked up the new King Diamond live CD/DVD.  Fuck me 40 bucks and the packaging is a joke.  Standard 2 cd digipak with the 2 DVD's and a seperate cardboard sleeve for the cd that just falls out when you open it up.  Not cool.

A couple of miscellaneous relics I found in a box today - they'll likely only mean anything to Paul but you never know.

Here is the little bible of young guitar players in the mid 80's.............this is the 2nd version (1985)  ever produced of the Boss Pocket Dictionary.   It was a time when pedals were really taking off and there was huge excitement among guitarists as to what would be added in the next year's edition

And a very early (6th -1995) version of Frontiers magazine - long before there was a Frontiers label but no doubt the name of this magazine was a forerunner to that.  This was a terrible time for the scene and the only colour is on the outside cover .  It's basically just a stapled together bunch of B&W sheets with very primitive looking news/reviews.  It includes Threshold's Psychedelicatessen which is likely where I first discovered them

I believe I have 4 remaining somewhere (all from that mid-late 80's period) -  Heavy Metal, Digital Delay , T-Wah and Hi-Band Flanger - all pretty much as new in boxes.

Speaking of that era, I also have one of the best stage rig processors of the time in an aluminium case etc.... (The Edge made it famous after I did :P) - the Korg A3  ;D

Good times for rock and metal.

Bone Machine?

A solo project/collaboration that Ted Poley did after leaving Danger Danger.  Pretty demo-ish stuff overall.

Well his last album with D2  (Screw It!) featured songs like Horny SOB etc..............so it wasn't all that surprising  :)

Bone Machine, Screw it, Slipped her the Big One, Horny SOB. I’m assuming these songs won’t make your podcast with Ben lol.

I just finished seeing Great White and Slaughter.  Is anyone familiar with Mitch Malloy, the new lead singer for Great White? I’m assuming Brent would be familiar with the Van Halen story with Mitch. There is a 15 minute documentary on YouTube with how Mitch became the lead singer for Van Halen for one month in 1996. It’s a pretty cool story and the part where Mitch is watching the mtv awards and Roth comes out with VH and he said to himself “this isn’t good for me” is pretty funny.

Clearly Eddie at some point would have fired Mitch and it wouldn’t have worked out long term, but I think Mitch would have been a much better fit for VH than Gary was.

Any way it was a pretty good show and both bands were better than I was expecting.  Lots of cougars in the crowd so that makes it better than it probably was lol

A couple of good gigs there Jay - dare I ask how Mark Slaughter's voice was ? :lol

I am familiar with Mitch Malloy and the VH story.  I have a couple of solo albums from Mitch - his debut is very solid melodic rock with one or two standouts.  He has a very clean voice - probably a bit too clean for Great White or VH in my opinion but he's a great guy with perfect hair and wonderful teeth :) .   Personally I think JSS would've been great for VH - or Ralph Saenz if they wanted a DLR clone (only better)

Yeah that’s a good point, his voice might be a little too clean for GW or VH. But he had good charisma and definitely did the GW songs justice. Hair was good too.

Mark did alright. It’s a casino gig so Slaughter only played 8 of 9 songs and GW did 10. I like this casino for the concerts. Bands play right on time, setlists are just hits and it’s easy to get out when it’s over.

I have a free front row ticket for Vixen/Great White in April. On the fence whether I am going. I forget if I mentioned it in here, but once Janet Gardner announced she was leaving Vixen (who I had been waiting for 30 years to see), I wrote the casino the gig is being held at, and asked the booking agent for the casino if he'd give me a refund, and why. Turns out, he is a huge 80s metal fan, and he said he'd refund me, but also comp me on the same exact ticket, because he thinks the world of the new singer, and wants me to see her for myself. I'm familiar with her, and she sings well (for the life of me, I am forgetting her name right now, lol), but I'm really on the fence, probably 70-30 NOT going. Great White, with Mitch Malloy, would be an upgrade for sure. I've seen Jack Russell's GW, and seen GW with the last singer. Both were terrible. At least I know MM can sing.  :lol

But, I'm pretty sure I am just going to skip the show. I was just at the same venue this weekend, and while not a terrible drive, its either go see the show being disappointed that the singer (Janet Gardner) I wanted to see isn't there any longer on a Saturday night, or hang with the fam. The latter is going to win out.

Good to gear re Mark - it wasn't so long ago his voice seemed totally gone.

I really haven't been following closely but I am guessing Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale)?

If anyone remembers a song from long ago (most likely a hard rock/melodic rock associated artist) that has pretty much the exact same sound as the chugga riff (under keyboards) at the start of Untethered Angel, then let me know.  I can't place it and it's annoying the crap out of me  :lol

So for the first time in YEARS... I listened to this from front to back:

I realized I didn't have a CD copy, so I ordered it and it was delivered today. This is a great album, and I was totally rocking out.
Holy shit does Vince Neil suck though. Man, I never realized how bad the vocals were.  :lol
But like DLR, they were perfect for Motley Crue.

Say what you will, but I love their first two albums, and remember vividly them coming out. I thought Theatre Of Pain blew, and was hugely disappointed, but I saw that tour and it was awesome. GGG was pretty bad, but again, they put on such a great show. Dr. Feelgood is a really good album. That would be the third and final tour I would see from them. After Shout, I was never really a big fan, as I would move into other areas of metal throughout the 80's, but no one put on a better show than they did in the 80's save for Iron Maiden.

No doubt that chugga style riff under keys appears quite a bit but the one I am thinking of is much closer in both tone and execution.

@ TAC... I didn't get 'in' to Crue until Dr. Feelgood.  As for the back catalogue, you're spot on.  TFFL and SatD are awesome (early) hair metal - METAL.  Theatre and GGG as proto-typical hair metal, and blow.  Dr. Feelgood blends the best of each.  After that, I stopped following them.
