Obscure Metal & Prog Facts
« on: March 02, 2015, 05:28:13 AM »
Okay, this is another idea I hijacked from the Prog Archives forum.  Over there it's just obscure prog facts, but I figured here we could extend it to all metal basically.  What is obscure?  Obviously nothing well-known like: Jordan Rudess played for Dream Theater once in 1994. Maybe something more along the lines of this: Pink Floyd's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was recorded at Abbey Road in 1967 – directly adjacent to The Beatles, who were recording Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at the same time.

Okay go!

Ha, I bought the best of compilation Echoes by Pink Floyd years ago, and when I got to Bike, I was like, "what is this, The Beatles?" That song is hilarious, but I hate that style.

I'll shape my obscure metal and prog fact into a trivia question:

Name the drummer who played for a famous  70s prog rock band that went on to play on  the debut album of a metal guitar god?

Dream Theater's song Pull Me Under ends abruptly in the middle of a riff. People probably think they have a messed up copy of the song/album, but the song was intentionally written like that, perhaps to symbolize how suddenly life can end with no warning.

But mine ends with a ukelele solo.

Don't know how obscure a fact is is, but I always found it amusing that while Yes were recording Tales from Topographic Oceans, at Morgan Studios, Black Sabbath were recording Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in the studio next to them. Wakeman even played piano and synth on Sabbra Cadabra for them and was compensated with beer. :lol

Barriemore Barlow.  The 70s prog band you are referring to is Jethro Tull and the guitar god is Yngwie Malmsteen.

This is not obscure.  Especially on, you know, a Dream Theater forum.

I thought it ended abruptly because the budget was tight and they couldn't afford another second of studio time so they chopped the worst song on the album.

That makes no sense, because Another Day is clearly not chopped anywhere.

Sharon Arden (later Osbourne) recommended Dio as Ozzy's replacement in Sabbath.

I agree with your logic, just don't agree with how you used it in this case.  So be it.    ;)
