Hard to believe that this one is already in the position of being the lead-in to the big event tonight, once I get my CD copy. They grow up so fast.  :'(

Really liking this one. Like all the finest wines, this one has improved with age. It's no IAW, but it's a very good Dream Theater album. No weak songs, and two of their very best of all time in The Bigger Picture and Illumination Theory.

I mean, I am, but that has nothing to do with the fact that I love DT12 and would rate it in the top half of their albums.

In fact, I would put all of their studio releases 2009-2013 in that category.

Left side = killer
Right side = I know the bands, but not these albums

I would rank the albums something like this

Holy Diver
Low
Nightmares

Bark at the Moon
Back for the Attack

Waiting for the Sun

Back for the attack should be at the top with holy diver. The rest I can live without.

Well it certainly was alright and definitely the best since Systematic Chaos. I need to listen more to see where it ends on my scale. I felt there were too many songs, and also the album suffered from not inviting guest vocalists. For all the praise for James, he did a great job indeed, but no way he was diverse enough to represent seven characters and the narrator. I wouldn't have been able to guess who sings what without a lyric sheet. He did a great job with his vocals as Nafaryus and also with his clean vocals as Faythe in A New Beginning.

The highlights for me are Lord Nafaryus (I knew this track will kick ass!), Three Days, Ravenskill and Moment of Betrayal. The latter works much better in context of the album, loved it when it popped up.

What really got me excited for this album is the supposed number of amazing ballads, and since I love ballads I thought this would be awesome. Well, guess what, aside from Ravenskill I don't remember any melodies from any ballad. I surely need to do a few more listens, but so far this album is very weak in good ballad department.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Yup, I should have started to dig deeper into their discography before  :metal
i forgive you, my child

but yeah this is their best album and if they continue in the direction they've been going the best they'll ever make
I haven't heard Coma Ecliptic(yet) but I agree TGM is their best.

I love Swim To The Moon  :metal

Just finished listening to the Astonishing for the first time...

Glad I had the lyrics... wow what an ambitious album. Some great moments even on first listen but I feel this  will need multiple listens to really sink in.

Love that they have shook things up this time and really done something else... might become a favorite, we'll see

I'm on my first listen ... and following along with the storyline on dt.net.  Thanks for the tip whoever mentioned it.

drm thtr - th stnshng

first-listen opinion:
it was alright, probably a bit better than i expected, but i don't feel like they had 2 hours of music in them, a fair number of the songs have no personality to them beyond the related story and even then a few of them (Begin Again comes to mind) don't even have a purpose story-wise and feel like filler

looking back at how I rated the songs, I should move BFTA above Bark, but I still couldn't put it up with the other three.  Really solid album, but just didn't have that standout track or two that blew me away.
Winger would be better!

This album is not just just sad or depressing, but downright hopeless. A tough listen, but perfect for lonely rainy nights.

Hm... There are good moments here and there but i feel it have too much filler to be an album you have desire to hear frequently. Overall, it isn't bad but not that good either, very much like their latest albums.

Currently listening to Amorphis - Tuonela

Never listened to it before but two things strike me:
1) It's very good. Very, very good actually. I'm surprised it doesn't get much praise from Amorphis fans, but I guess since it's preceded by Elegy (which is just massive) and followed by Am Universum (which is a very good album), I guess it's not surprising.
2) This is probably the best sounding Amorphis album I've heard. As much as I like the later Joutsen-era albums, the music tends to get lost in the mixing/mastering, especially on Circle and Under The Red Cloud.

Today I've been listening to albums I love but don't remember to relisten too often, and Baroness' newest release which is growing to be one of my favorites of last year.

Since I'm waiting for my copy of the Astonishing to arrive in the mail I decided to continue my journey through the Metal Church Discography.

After listening to Blessing in Disguise I can see why people are excited for Mike Howes return to the band. It's a great album and Anthem to the Estranged might be my favorite metal church track so far.
