What's the top right, Hath?

The Sword - Gods of the Earth

kind of doomy stoner metal.  Like the doom side of older Black Sabbath meets Mastadon with lyrics by H. P. Lovecraft and George R. R. Martin.

Jenny Hval, Susanna - Meshes of Voice

Art-pop with drone. No seriously - it's amazing how minimal and catchy it is. And experimental too! I Have Walked This Body is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time - her voices totally fit the dark mood. Can't believe I missed it last year.

My attempts to stump Brent:

the last two are Klone/Here Comes the Sun, and Arcane Atlas/Constellation Plus

Also, Tim's post above about Pantommind reminded me that any band with "Mind" in their name is fuckin awesome - so I went searching for a few more bands fitting the criteria.  The theory holds true.

Think about it.

I thought with my mind and I think you're right  ;D

The trouble with the "stump Brent" exercise is that I may have checked them all out and thought they were shit and forgotten about em  ;D

Well the bottom four are giving me a neo-prog vibe (not good odds I've checked them out as my strike rate in that style is about 1 in 20).  I have 2 of the top 4 in my collection and am pretty sure I checked out the other two and wasn't rapt in them.  So call me stumped on the bottom four.

If you're looking for Prog/Power Metal, lead with the first four - especially Forgotten Suns.  This one is just an EP, but their most recent release is killer (as are their other 3 releases).  The Sorcerer one was pretty decent - aided by the fact it's fronted by Anders Endberg (of Speaking to Stones).  Mind Odyssey gave me a Pretty Maids / Accept vibe.

As for the others... not quite neo prog.  Inner Odyssey is all prog - listing bands from PT, to DT, to Flower Kings, to Circus Maximus as their influences.  Killer album

Klone - kinda in the same vein... have more of that grungy/wall-of-sound effect, like Devin Townsend

Arcane Atlas - classic Prog sound. More keyboard led ... think Rush + ELP.  So, I guess that's neo-prog.

Lake of Mind was the weakest of the bunch - more straight forward metal.  Still pretty good though.

That ought to help you prioritize.  Happy listening boys.

I *never* thought a hip-hop album could appeal me so much. Such creativity - I guess that happens when you have a strong jazz influence.

I really liked the Inner Odyssey. I got a bit of a Sieges Even feel from them but I've only heard it once so far.

My favorite videogame OST ever (along Silent Hill 3).

It's definitely my favourite OST from the FF series, and considering that overall, the only other video game series that can compete with FF as far as sheer quality of soundtracks goes is Castlevania, that's saying a lot.  FFVIII had awesome battle music in particular, especially the 4 hit combo of Premonition, The Legendary Beast, Maybe I'm A Lion and The Extreme for the final boss fight.  Truly an epic soundtrack.

Speaking of Catlevania, some of that awesomeness may need to find it's way into rotation on my MP3 player in the near future.....
