For my reread this month, I'm going big. I decided to reread Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes (although, it's a different translation: the Edith Grossman, so technically, it'll be a new experience). I originally read it 23 years ago during my senior year in high school. Our drama club was originally going to do Man of La Mancha for the Spring show (we ended up doing The Secret Garden instead), and I wanted to read the source material to better understand the play. In the end, even though we never did the show, for years, Don Quixote ended up being one of my favorite reading experiences.

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. My sister, who normally is spot on with her recommendations for me, thought this might be a stretch. I didn't enjoy it much, past the first 1/3 or so. But she said she didn't either. So it was a gamble.

On to The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, also a gift/recommendation from her.

Determined to empty out my I-own-this-but-didn't-get-to-it-yet list, I'll have a go at Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, this is going to be a long read I'm sure.

This is going slooooooowly, slower than Snow Crash and Anathem really. I'm 160 pages in, the book is like 1100 pages. If it wasn't a gift from my best friend, I would've DNFed this already.

Now, reading Michael Chabon's The Escapist: Amazing Adventures. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is one of my favorite books (definitely hoping to give that a reread one of these days), so I'm going to give this a try

Not many readers here on DTF, it seems. My latest:

It's such a damn shame the movie sucked...Idris Elba actually would have made a great Roland Deschain, if not for the godawful writing and direction.

This is the last book in the series I really enjoyed. Skipped the movie seeing all the negative reactions to it.

I will, but I expect to be stuck with it at least until mid-May if not June.

450 pages into Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon and I think it's not even half of the book. Man, this guy loves to ramble. I don't know.

Honestly I understand why he added some of the viewpoints beyond the main three characters. On the other hand—and I may be completely wrong as I don't know where this book is going, perhaps it'll neatly tie all the plot points up—there's just... nothing happening mostly beyond the main plot points which are scarce. Some chapters are literally Randy and Avi and Tom and Eb discussing stuff. Some chapters are Shaftoe painting the stencils which was hilarious, I'll admit.

Honestly I just wish he sped up the plot a little bit. The premise is exciting, but I wish it was more action-packed instead of this: Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse spends three hours to walk into Bletchley Park. He sees bees flying around. Bees are flying in patterns. Lawrence likes patterns. Sergeant Bobby Shaftoe is on a boat to who knows where. He doesn't understand what's going on, but he intends to follow the orders and not ask any questions. "Sir, yes, sir!", says Bobby Shaftoe. Randy boots up his laptop and then remembers he's ought to be at the meeting at 10 AM. Avi orders him a suit which arrives at 7 and the suit is perfectly tailored for him. Goto Dengo spoke with Shaftoe a couple of times and now he's about to lose the war. Admiral Yamamoto's feet hurt because his shoes weren't aired for a while and the climate here is shite.

All I'm saying is he'd better to stick the landing.

Spent the weekend reading a handful of graphic novels (probably going to do this from now on, unless I'm reading something really good):

-First off, Marvels by Kurt Busiek, although this was more a reread. Read it originally in 2012, but this time around I read the remastered edition which came out a few years back. Still, an awesome book

-Dark Victory by Jeph Loeb, the sequel to The Long Halloween. I think this was just as good as its predecessor. Liked how it worked in the origin of Robin.

-The Mask Omnibus, Volume 1 by John Arcudi. So different from the movie, I couldn't believe it

-Captain America: Winter Soldier by Ed Brubaker. Ever since the movie, I had wanted to check this out. Sharon Carter got the shaft big time in the movies

-Finally Harleen by Stjepan Sejic. This was the undisputed winner. A great interpretation on how the Joker was able to manipulate and transform Harley

Anyway, back to books, with an epic fantasy: Battle Mage by Peter A. Flannery

Wonder how that plays into Falcon and Winter Soldier? Because she looks like she now has a huge story line coming.

Also, with season one of Invincible done, thought it'd be a good time as any to start reading the comics, so I'm going to be going through Invincible, Compendium One by Robert Kitkman

Solid story. Not my personal favorite Batman story that would have to be The Long Halloween but I can see why it's seen as such a classic (even if certain things did not age well). Shame Miller hasn't written anything worth a damn in decades at this point.
