The Institute was good, but like a lot of his books, could have used some editing. Still, fairly worth checking out

How Music Works by David Byrne.

I appreciate this book being more than just a retrospective on Talking Heads, as much as I would love to read that as well. You can really feel the passion he has for this art form.

... I'm reading From Hell by Alan Moore

This is an amazing piece of work. I am not a graphic novel guy, but am a bit of an amateur Ripperologist, and while I understand this is a (debunked*) theory, it is still a fascinating experience. I know the movie isn't generally highly regarded, but for what they were shooting for, I found it very enjoyable.

Or is "bunk" bad?

I have a great love for post apocalyptic novels: The Stand, Swan Song, The Passage, Station Eleven, last year with The Book of M. Let's see if Wanderers by Chuck Wendig joins those ranks

I just bought Swan Song e-book for $2. I think I'm going to read it after I finish The Count of Monte Cristo. I've read four of his other books: The Border, Stinger, and the two Werewolf ones. I really enjoyed the werewolf books.

The Passage was really good but the next two books were disappointing to me. I just couldn't really get into them but I don't regret reading them.

I thought The Twelve was a decent follow up, but that third book?! Also, I'm a huge fan of McCammon's. Besides Swan Song, I've also read Boy's Life (his best book IMO), Speaks the Nightbird, Wolf's Hour (forgot there was a sequel), and his first book Baal, which was the only dud for me

The sequel is a collection of short stories or novellas I think. I think most of them take place before the events of the first book and the last story takes place when the character is older. It's worth reading if you enjoyed The Wolf's Hour.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone who has read those books say anything different. .

I FINALLY finished Dune.  It was tough to get going but at some point I was finally familiar with all the characters and subplots that I could complete it.  I read one person's take on the book that the reader is supposed to feel a bit lost at first, to parallel the main character's similar plight in his path.  The author just drops you in the story and you are supposed to pick up on the culture, traditions and politics as they happen or are recalled by the characters without (too much) forced didactic devices from those characters.  I'm pretty inexperienced in reading fiction since I avoided it most of my life, but I was really amazed that a person could create such a full and nuanced culture and world (or universe).  I suppose this is the case with stories like Lord of the Rings, too.

While I really enjoyed the book, I'm not sure I want to continue in the series.  I think I'll revisit Asimov's Foundation first.

I read the original Dune books many years ago and I remembered liking them all. I've since read the first book a few times and it was always great. However, I can't say the same about the next 5 books. I couldn't even continue them after God Emperor of Dune. At that point, it really felt like Herbert was more interested in getting his philosophical ideas across rather than telling a good story. I'm really not a fan of that sort of sci-fi. I may try to read them again some day.

Same here. There was a lot about the second and third books I didn't understand. Or I didn't care to understand because I lost interest.

Empire Of Grass by Tad Williams. This thing is about 1600 pages long, so it will probably occupy me till the end of the year.  :D

I enjoyed Wanderers, for the most part, although I slightly hated he left the ending on a bit of a cliffhanger (unless he's planning on writing a sequel)

Jack Sparks wins the award for most original book I've read so far this year, and a great creepy read for this time of year.

Now, about to read a fictional account of the Donner party with The Hunger by Alma Katsu

Quick fun read, I liked it.

The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons. Tor promoted the hell out of this book, let's see if it deserved all the hype.

Death is my favourite character in the series, so I also really enjoyed Mort.

I'm a little over half way through this. Didn't deserve the hype so far. Not bad, just not all that great.

Mort was great.

Mort is one of my favorite Discworld books

As for the how long I spend reading, I don't know. With the exception of two books (I think The Institute was almost 700 pages and Wanderers almost 800. The Stand and From Hell were pretty long as well, but they were graphic novels, so I'm usually pretty quick with those), most of the books I read this month were under 400 pages
