On to another wizard Harry: Storm Front by Jim Butcher

This series really starts to take off by the third book. Storm Front is a first novel, and it shows (not bad, just not quite up to later standards). Fool Moon leap frogs it as a sophomore effort. Then Grave Peril is where things really get good.

I hope you stick with it.

I've heard that before but I wanted to start at the beginning and not somewhere in the middle of the series, we'll see how it goes.

I would too, if I were you. And don't get me wrong, Storm Front has one of my favorite Dresden moments ever! You probably know what I'm talking about when you get there, if you haven't already.

I notice that "Name of the Wind" and "Wise Man's Fear" look a bit lonely.   :sadpanda:

Don't even mention that. I totally support the guy taking all the time he needs to deliver a new book that is as good as the first two. Creativity can't be rushed, as shown my the Dark Tower, but I will admit that I reaaaaaaaaly need that third book.

I've read Snow Crash. It was good until a certain part which I won't mention in case you didn't get to it yet. Never returned to that author, although I heard Cryptonomicon was good.

I've almost finished the book now, which part would that be?

Are some of these books floating, or are they glued to the top of the shelf?  ;D

The religious/mythological musings during the few chapters in the middle. I've read it like five years ago, so perhaps my views have changed now, but back then I found it absolutely boring.

It always bothered me that Dresden is wearing a hat in literally all the cover art. He's quoted in one of the books saying "I don't do hats". I swear it's just Butcher screwing with his fans

The fedora on the covers, if I remember right, started out as a visual short cut to say to perspective readers "Wizard+Detective". Plus, the art department just thought it looked better. Once the cover artist read the books (a few years after they started up) he painted covers both with and without hats and they always thought the fedora looked better. Eventually, it became a kind of beloved inside joke between author, publisher and fans. I'd be shocked if we ever got a cover without the fedora now.

Finished the first Harry Dresden book. It was solid, nothing spectacular but had some good scenes. Now on to the second one

I'm finally glad I finished something. It's been roughly ten days. Thought I was in for another rough reading slump like I had around two years ago. Now reading a history of the New York Yankees, Pinstripe Empire by Marty Appel

Finished Fool Moon, and while I enjoyed it, I thought the story wasn't that great. Too many wolves from everywhere.

Taking a rest from Harry Dresen with Wild Cards II: Aces High by George R. R. Martin and many others.

Sweet Silver Blues by Glen Cook

Finished that and also Bitter Gold Hearts by the same author while I was sick, it's alright, not a heavy reading or anything, just a fun action-packed detective stories.

Wasn't sure what to read next but then got a notification from a local bookstore that they finally got a new Cormoran Strike novel in stock, visited them today and bought a copy, so for the next few weeks or so:

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I love the Cormoran Strike series. I still need to get Lethal White though.

I finished The Black Dahlia earlier and I really liked it. It wont make my favorite books list at all but I enjoyed it enough to check out the other books in his L.A Quartet.

Ha, sorry about that bro. I just had recalled seeing Masterthes posting here with a regularity far outpacing everyone else.

Just finished Dickens' A Christmas Carol for the first time. The 1984 film version with George C. Scott has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid (and young enough for the Ghost of Christmas Yet to COme to frfeak the living piss out of me). Just realized this year I have never read the story.

Love, love, love all the Robin Hobb books in that particular world of hers. Even the Dragon Keeper series was stellar, which surprised me since it didn't include Fitz or Beloved.
