Any Murakami fans in here?

I read Norwegian Wood and Wild Sheep Chase. I'm still not sure what to think about the second, really weird but that's charm of it. I will probably check Kafka on the shore next (when my college year finishes).

A week late on this, but that's interesting to hear. I've not read either of those but was really impressed with Colorless Tsukuru... And am looking forward to checking out something else.

I don't recommend 1Q84 tho, the last book is just boring and disappointing.

Has anyone read A World of Ice and Fire? It's $22 on Amazon today but the reviews are mixed.

I want to read it sometime in the future but I wait till it gets cheaper (it's around 25-30 euros last time I looked).

I plan on reading it eventually, so I would definitely say you should check it out, especially if you want some more detail behind the history of ASOIAF.

Just finished reading a book called I'm Thinking of Ending Things, by a debut author named Iain Reid.

I really liked it.  It's fucking weird, and it tries a little too hard to be so fucking weird, but it's got flashes of brilliance, and it's pretty fascinating to read.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

Now reading The World of Ice & Fire by George R.R. Martin, Elio M. Garcia Jr, and Linda Antonsson.

Can you let us know what you think of it. Is it a worthwhile read?

I just picked up a book called Boy, Snow, Bird, by Helen Oyeyemi. It's a retelling of the Snow White fairytale, which is one of my two favorite influences for modernizations.

A week late on this, but that's interesting to hear. I've not read either of those but was really impressed with Colorless Tsukuru... And am looking forward to checking out something else.

I have read a couple of his books Kafka, The  wind up bird, 1Q84 and am reading Norwegian wood now.

Read Kafka first and absolutely loved it. It was soo strange and wonderful. Still probably my favorite of his.
Read The wind up bird chronicles after that. This one can compete with Kafka in my view as favorite Murakami.

After that I read 1Q84 which I enjoyed quite a bit but not as much as the previous two. Found it to have passages that could have been shortened, but still a very good read.

Now reading Norwegian Wood. It is quite different from the other ones I have read. Much more realistic, taking place fully in the world we know. Wonderful story about growing up and dealing with issues of love and loss. Would probably rank this over 1Q84 but below the other two.

Started with the second book of the Dark Tower series last night - a few chapters in and I'm really enjoying it.
Kept reading it and damn, this is some impressive creative shit.
Finally finished it, fucking college. Excellent read, very interesting twists and characters. Looking forwards to the rest of the series!

The second book, and specifically the shootout at Balazar's is what really sold me on the Dark Tower series. So good.

I picked up a couple new reads for vacation this week. 11/22/63 from Stephen King and Nos4a2 from his son Joe.
Photobucket sucks.

Yeah, the second book is where the series starts to get really good and interesting. The first one left me mostly cold and if it wasn't for my sister who insisted that I have to read "The Drawing Of The Three", I probably wouldn't have touched another book of the series.

I loved, loved, loved 11/23/63, one of the best King books imo. Haven't read anything by his son yet. Is it good?

Finally finished with McCullough's Masters of Rome series. Really good historical fiction, but sometimes it got a little too bogged down with the history stuff at times. My rankings:
1. Caesar's Women
2. Fortune's Favorites
3. The Grass Crown
4. The October Horse
5. The First Man In Rome
6. Caesar
7. Antony And Cleopatra

Anyway, getting back to reading Joseph and His Brothers. I'm halfway done and am determined to finally finish it

Read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, I recommend this one and her two other book to fans of thrillers. It is probably the worst out of three but still cool, especially if you like it dark
Took Return of the King today (finally) to finish Lord of the Rings.

That series is on my list. I'm currently reading the Conqueror Series by Conn Iggulden. It about the Genghis Khan and the Mongolian Empire. Absolutely fantastic series.

Sandman: Worlds`End by Neil Gaiman.

The author simply never disappoints me (I can highly recommend American Gods and Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett) to anyone interested in well done and non-cliche fantasy) and the Sandman series is probably going to become my favourite comic series of all time (still have to read the last 2 books).

I'm a huge fan of Neil's (I was going to originally say I'm a huge fan of Gaiman but that just didn't sound right) and Sandman is not something I've read yet. I bought the first book of the series but haven't got around to reading it.

To be honest, I think that the first book in the series is the "worst" of them, but that doesn`t mean it`s bad, just that I prefer every book afterwards. The second book (The Doll`s House) however is incredibly well written and got me to continue reading the series (I was unsure whether to go on reading the books after the first one).

Read that a few months ago. Very good.

All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr is what I'm reading now. After that will either be Bag of Bones, by Stephen King, or Galilee, by Clive Barker.

Books just finished:

End of Watch - Stephen King
The Terminal Man - Michael Crichton
She's Come Undone - Wally Lamb
Mr. B Gone - Clive Barker
Brave
Murder
Day

So, what do you do after having finally finished an almost 1,500 paged historical epic that you have had on your currently reading shelf after almost exactly two years?!

You read an almost 1,000 page sci-fi epic like Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton

I'm almost through all of the Clive Barker books. Just have Abarat series left. In regards to Bag of Bones or Galilee they're both pretty good. I think I liked Galilee slightly better.

Every time I check this thread (which is quite seldom) I see a mention of SK in some fashion.  Just goes to show how far his reach is (well deserved I might add).

The Tower series (especially the final book... make the choice to keep reading btw) was an incredible read for me; I was brought to tears several times.  I actually was thinking of re-reading them a few years back when Ron Howard was thinking of proceeding with the movie/tv series... sorry to say that didn't pan-out.

Edit... looks like there IS going to be a movie!  Stoked for it now!

Now with Twitler taking a high end steak of this caliber and insulting the cow that died for it by having it well done just shows zero respect for the product, which falls right in line with the amount of respect he shows for pretty much everything else.- Lonestar
