On my 5th read through of the series, and it's still getting better with each read. I won't disagree with Chris' assessment of Waste Lands (many, many pages to draw Jake; many, many pages to save Jake), but it works for me in this story. The Lud part of the story is also very nicely written using the same 'backwards' technique as the opening of the Gunslinger. The story rotating between the 3 view points with each one starting behind the previous section, but taking the story a little further in time. Top notch, in my books.

This one will be a bit of a slog. The Meijis part of the story is great, but I could do without the looong intro to wrap up the Blaine plot, and the pointless end at the emerald castle.

When I first read this one years ago, I was astounded by the Mejis section. I forgot I was reading a book in the Dark Tower series, I was that engrossed in the story. I am at that part now in my second read through but am finding it hard to get engaged. Part of it is I am so tired when I read at night, after 5-10 pages I am sacked out and ready for bed.

Haven't updated in a while:

-couldn't finish The Mirror and the Light, just couldn't get into it, so instead I ended up reading A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians by H.G. Parry. Fairly enjoyable, will definitely be reading the sequel after my Wheel of Time reading for the month

-to get ready for the next Thor movie, I read Thor, The Complete Collection: Vol. 1 by Jason Aaron, which includes the Gorr storyline. I'll be reading the next few in June because that includes the Jane as Thor line

-finally, because I've never read her before, I read Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion, which was okay. I'll definitely read some of her other collections in the future.

Anyway, since it's the start of the month, it's on to A Crown of Swords by Robert Jordan

Just finished Wizard and Glass. Pretty much as I remembered, as someone so concisely put it earlier:

The Meijis part of the story is great, but I could do without the looong intro to wrap up the Blaine plot, and the pointless end at the emerald castle.

I know he retconned Wind Through the Keyhole next but I have not read that one as it didn't exist when I read through the series previously. I do own it so will give it a go this time around.

I wouldn't say Wind Through the Keyhole is a retcon. He didn't change anything about the core DT story, as that book takes place after the events of W&G but before the ka-tet reaches Call Bryn Sturgis. It's a fantastic read, too. It's bit inception-esque with the story within a story within a story, but top notch nevertheless.

You are correct, I should not have used that term.

I enjoyed it too, but I agree about it not being groundbreaking or anything. It was more like a mish mash of a bunch of well-worn fantasy/sci-fi themes reworked into a clever (admittedly well-done) package.

Sticking with the nonfiction. Since this year would've been Judy Garland's 100th birthday, I'm reading Get Happy by Gerald Clarke

Really good biography, my favorite book of the month so far. Hoping Adrian Tchaikovsky can top it though with Cage of Souls

So, without getting into spoilers, what did you think of that ending? Personally, I saw it coming almost from the very beginning, because there's a line that Hazel says early on that I'm pretty sure foreshadowed what was to come

So I made it up to the Wind through the Keyhole section in Wind Through the Keyhole and I must say I have absolute no interest in anything that is happening so far.

My 6 year old son has begun watching some of the Star Wars movies. He took a look at the cover of DT5, and immediately asked "are those light sabres?" followed quickly by "why are there light sabres in this story?". To which I have to reply "Yes, yes they are. But it's far too confusing and complicated to explain"
