If my wife had her way, Christmas lights would go up the day after Thanksgiving ("the official start of Christmas season") and come down Jan 1st, because that's always how her family did it. Basically, any time there isn't an established normal way to do something, we do it the way her family did it, and most of the time I don't really care enough to argue. Choose your battles, etc.
But that's if she had her way. Christmas lights go up a week or so before Christmas because basically I do the work while she stands there and "directs" the operations. So it tends to happen when I feel like it, which is usually mid-December because around then I suddenly think "Well shit, I really should get those lights out and up". And they don't come down on New Year's Day because come on, I'm watching bowl games and/or napping from the previous night's festivities. I'm gonna break away from that to take down Christmas lights because some lame tradition says that that's the day to do it? Nah. I do choose my battles.
