For Easter Sunday, our music director suggested that I whip up an instrumental thing. Maybe something from Jesus Christ Superstar. I reminded her that our congregation is getting more progressive, but still is stuck in the last century in general, and that includes musically. She thought that I could put something together that worked, besides Jesus Christ Superstar
is from last century. I asked her what I'd have to work with in terms of instruments. A lot of it wasn't nailed down at first, but we knew we'd have a violin, a guitar, a saxophone, and possibly piano and/or organ as well. I thought about playing the flute. I could do some cool shit with three lead instruments and continuo. Then the sax wasn't available but a flute became available, so I switched to sax. We ended up with six of us; seven if you count the organ that comes in for the last eight bars.
Tim and Steve T - Guitars, Amy - Flute, Michael - Violin, Steve M - Piano, Baptismal Font, Easter Lilies and Other Flowers, Orbert - Alto Saxophone. I had no idea that I was so far away from everyone else. I thought we were pretty well spread out on that side of things.
Before the service started, Michael went upstairs and messed with the slides. It used to just say Instrumental Ensemble. He added the title (complete with typo) and a credit to the arranger. I was kinda bummed. I think it's cool as hell when people like the music and talk about it, then word gets out that I did the arrangement, but I won't ask for them to put my name on the slide. That's just embarassing. Also, many people know that I usually do that kind of thing, so it's just not necessary. Oh well.
