ADTOE..Easily.

I agree. Blob doesn't agree but I think it was their most DT sounding album in a while.

I'm going to be mostly alone on this, but SC is the best of them for me. I rank all of them close together at the bottom, but I loved BCASL when it came out, and I still enjoy SC a lot when I listen to it. ADTOE and DT12 were never great albums for me.

ADTOE..Easily.

It's quite a solid album, but it's just consistently average for me for the most part. No big high points or top DT songs imo, and the production sounds like a rough pre-mix. But it's not bad.

I actually prefer it to Dream Theater - which is almost too tough sounding for it's own good. And that snare makes Along For The Ride almost unlistenable.

DT12 has arguably higher highs but I think overall that A Dramatic Turn Of Events is more consistent.

I agree. DT12 has much higher high points for me, but there's not as much on the album I enjoy. ADTOE was a pretty easy album to listen to overall, whereas I skip the bulk of DT12 for the ends of the album. It starts and ends at its strongest imo.

Definitely. ADTOE way out in front, BC&SL lagging well behind at the bottom and the other 2 somewhere in between for me.

ADTOE in terms of songwriting.
But technically it also happens to be the most boring-sounding of the bunch. DT12 and BCSL pack a punch that makes their highlights stand out more.

It's so weird that ADTOE sounds the way it does while the mix was done by Andy Wallace. If it's the source recordings, I would've declined the job if I were him.

ADTOE, though the others aren't bad. The weaker ink is Black Clouds, though.

I actually agree with Blob that ADTOE is consistently average, but that still makes it better than the other three.

DT12. It's the most consistant, doesn't have any bad songs, no Images and Words clones, and no roaring.

If we're talking production quality then I think that Black Clouds is the best sounding.

They really need to nail the production on DT13.

I think JP should bring in a 2nd producer for the drums.

Well he produced and mixed Limp Bizkit so your a bit off about Andy's integrity. :lol

A Dramatic Turn Of Events is easily my favorite, although I love SC and BC&SL as well. The self titled one is easily my least favorite of the bunch, although it's still very good.

In order to be consistent with my recent DT album ranking, ADTOE wins.  However, all 4 RR era albums are near the bottom of my list.

I agree that nothing from the RR era touches their best work like Scenes, Six Degrees, Images & Words or Octavarium but there's nothing as bad as

When Dream and Day Unite.

They don't do "bad" albums. They just do albums that aren't as good as their best.

SC
DT12

ADTOE

BC&SL

This, though with no spaces between ADToE and BC&SL; those two are at the bottom of my album rankings.

SC is great; TMoLS, ITPoE, and especially TDEN are amazing, and outshine most of the other three records.

Each Roadrunner album has been significantly better than the last IMO. Makes me excited for what they have in store.

Honestly, every time I listen to BC&SL, I really find myself enjoying most of it. The riffs, the musical ideas are usually great, but it does suffer from fairly dull and unimaginative vocal melodies and some seemingly lazy or unrefined lyrics, and that's what really brings it down for me.
ADTOE suffers from the same dull vocal melodies, for a lot of it, but thankfully, the lyrics are more interesting and better written.

But both of the last two are miles ahead of the two before.

I feel the same way; the first 25 minutes or so contain some great high points, but are littered with a few cringe-worthy sections that drag them down. The remaining 50 minutes are excellent. BC&SL is not a bad album, it is just weaker than the rest of DT's material.
