Do you have a TV channel subscription?
« on: August 01, 2014, 04:35:58 PM »
Figured this would be interesting to see.
During the Soccer World Cup I was surprised to find out that none of my closest friends has a TV subscription anymore. We all use a combination of Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, Google Play etc (and some unsavory sources, which I'm sad to admit).

Nope, but mostly to save money. We use Netflix and Amazon Prime, but the latter only because I forgot to cancel before the trial was over...

No because there really is no more need for it with all the options online now. Plus you won't have to deal with stupid stuff like some cable Providers not showing certain things because of issues with other Providers. Like this Dodgers crap with Direct TV.

Pretty much the only "TV" I watch is Netflix, other than that I rely on my own DVDs.

I do, because of the missus and all the 'reality' crap she has to watch, and she can't figure out Netflix and Hulu, though she is getting better.

I'm willing to bet majority of fogeys will have cable; majority of millennials won't.  I suspect it's a combination of culture and finances drive that.  20 somethings just setting out on their own for the first time don't have $80 to drop on cable + $100+ for cell and internet.  Something's gotta give, so buh-bye cable.  Makes total sense.  When I was mid-20 getting out of Uni, there was not Internet access or cell, so cable was the form of in-home entertainment.  Nowadays, things are much different.

Still, the king put it best.

I do and I know I'm a relic but I still have links to my cable on my cell and tablets.

Nope. I stopped watching TV when I got to college (didn't wanna pay for it) and after a while you don't really miss it. I don't even have Netflix or hulu or any of that because I use a work hotspot for internet and can't stream stuff. As many of you know I... I... still go to the video store!  :lol

When I get my own place, I can't imagine really getting any kind of subscription. I do watch sports, but that's about it. As far as movies and shows go, there are great alternatives.

No TV subscription.  My total media access cost per month is $95.  That includes my internet connection and cell phone.

I find that I'm alone among my friends, except one who recently ditched cable and does the amazon prime/hulu/antenna thing now.  They all have major carrier cell phone plans north of $100/month, "triple play" TV/internet/phone packages, when they don't even use their home phones.  Most agree when I explain that its mostly a waste of time and money, but its too familiar for some, I guess.

Yes, I have a cable TV subscription in all of my houses.  I also have DIRECTV service for the five cars that I use the most.  I thought getting satellites on all of them would be a bit extravagant, although I could easily afford it.

We had cable. We dropped it. Time Warner sucks monkey balls. We switched out for Hulu + / Amazon prime / Netflix. Then we dumped Netflix. Then we resigned with Time Warner. Because they suck monkey balls but are the only provider here that is not dish.  Now we have 100 channels... HBO, Cinimax, Hulu +, Prime, and we piggyback on Panda's Dad's MLB Network subscription.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I grew up with cable, but since I've been living by myself I've never bothered to get it.  I don't watch much TV anymore anyway.

I've never tried it but there are Red Box all over our town.  It's cheap to rent a Blu Ray for movies but if I want to rent a movie I just co it from my cable box at home.

Truth.  Netflix has improved considerably over the past couple of years, and there's ways to shirk it (Hola) on a browser to get access to the US library.  Sadly, other services aren't up here, and you can't pay unless you have a US credit card, so you can't even spoof the system.

Total monthly bills for me - $140ish for cell (covered by work); $80 for Cable; $60 for Interwebz.

Fortunately, the only live sports I care anything about is the NY Giants, which is free over the air, in non-compressed HD.

Once I ditched cable I discovered within a day or two how much I fucking hate commercial television. As long as I have pseudo-highspeed internet (read American) I don't need any of that crap. I paid for Aereo during football season last year, but sadly the SCOTUS, in a very questionable decision, shot that down. Now I'll just go back to pirating games from Europe; better experience anyway.

JB:I suspect a big part of the reason for the age disparity in cable-cutters (myself excepted) is that old fucks are used to watching TV on big screens, whereas youngsters are almost always parked in front of a monitor or laptop. My big-screen is setup as a 3rd monitor and VLC outputs through my stereo, so I can watch anything from my computer just like it's a DVD.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Well, it's $5 if you rent individual movies, but if you have a subscription plan like me, it's $15 a month and you can basically come in as much as you want and have two movies out at a time with no late fees. Considering I usually go in at least weekly to switch them out, totally worth it.
