Famous quotes from history
« on: July 25, 2014, 04:07:02 AM »
So over the years, there have been some incredible quotes. Many of which have really helped guide me through life and what have you. So I wanted to create a dedicated thread for all the quotes that you find valuable or hold near and dear.

Movie quotes are acceptable too, but it actually has to have some decent meaning or depth to it like (keep you friends close and enemies closer, for example)

So I'll start everything off with a quote from the Chinese philosopher Laozi

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

This is a quote I use quite often, especially when starting new endeavors. Every journey, no matter how long, has to start somewhere.

So what are some of your favorite quotes and why?

" A wise man speaks because he has something to say... An idiot speaks because he has to say something. "

Or

" Even if you failed - it's still better than someone who never tried. " - I forget the exact wording but it's pretty close.

And I just realised it's also a Dream Theater lyric :p

Socrates - "I drank what?"

But seriously, I always liked the following, from Vonnegut:

“And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.'”

I like to use this against people who see virtue in "conviction", which I just call stubbornness.

A poem by Mas Ehrmann called Desiderata has been a constant source of inspiration and spiritual guidance for me. Here is the final stanzas....

"You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy."

Joke quote - "Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat" - Jesse 'The Body' Ventura

Serious quote - "The secret of success is getting started" - Mark Twain

Serious (though not famous) - "No matter what you do, unless you die, life goes on."  it's my personal philosophy to not sweat the small stuff.

Funny --    I used to say "sex, drugs, and rock and roll." As long as there's sex and drugs, I can do without rock and roll.  --  Mick Shrimpton, Spinal Tap

Serious  --   The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.  —  Ellen Parr

The serious one always stuck with me.

"We've had to scratch out one hell of a tough road to get here today, and everyone's saying Oklahoma is a better team than we are...Are they? Hell, I don't know. I don't think so, but maybe they are. What I do know is that after today, whether it's ten years, or twenty years, or fifty years from now...each and every person in this room will have to look himself in the mirror and honestly answer to himself, "Did I do everything I could do to help my teammates win today?" Because only YOU can answer that question for yourself, and for the rest of your life, you will ALWAYS know the answer to that question. And if that answer is going to be, "Yes", then you've got one hell of a good chance to win this football game. So...for each one of you...What will your answer be?"

~ Washington Huskies Head Coach Don James; Pre-game Locker Room Speech, 1985 Orange Bowl

Final Score:
Washington 28
Oklahoma 17

Yes.
