He died at 86. Great actor, and from my home state, too.

I have to admit that the only thing I've ever seen him in is Maverick, the film from the mid 90s with Mel Gibson. He was great in it. He seemed to have a natural charisma that just oozed off the screen.

This is sad. He was a true all time great entertainer. Also one of the few memories I had with my grandfather as a very young child was watching reruns of the tv show Maverick on TV Land I think. He was always a pleasure to watch. He will sorely be missed.

My first thought too. I never watched Maverick, or the Rockford Files, and honestly couldn't name 3 other things I've seen him in. Everyone has something good to say about a celebrity when they die, but it seems like no one ever had anything bad to say about him . For a star who endured as long as he did, that is a rarity.

The only one I've seen him in is The Great Escape. Such a great movie

My favorites with him were Maverick and 8 Simple Rules. And Kev is right about his oozing charisma.
Edit: Can't forget My Fellow Americans. I'd say his chemistry with Jack Lemmon was on par with Walter Matthau's.
