I actually don't think they could have gone around the car. Those hoses are rather stiff, especially when they are on pressure, and the hydrant outlet points straight at the car.

True.  Also, even if they could have, once those hoses are pressured up, they straighten out anyway, so the best path would still be the most direct one.

I just like to imagine the guy coming back to his car and thinking "Ah, so this is why you don't park next to a fire hydrant.  Got it."  Or more likely "What the fuck?!" and then when he whines to his friends about it, they laugh at him and tell him that that's why you don't park next to a fire hydrant.

Ain't nobody going to defend the guy; he parked like an asshole. At the same time, it seems that quite often the firedudes do that because they can, even though it might not be necessary. Not real crazy about that, either. If it's necessary, then by all means. If not, then don't go being spiteful. From what I can tell some departments tolerate this and others won't. Looking into it I found this:

Quote
ETA: While I think the pic is real, I feel that it was probably not strictly necessary to do this. The time savings to me would seem to be minimal, and unless the hose was just long enough to reach the hydrant, I would suspect that the hose could have been run around the car in a satisfactory manner to avoid kinking. As I stated, my Department would never allow this, and we do pretty well without resorting to these tactics.

I suspect that this was done: 1) Because it is the department's policy. 2) because it is tolerated by the department, so why not? and or 3) to teach the driver a lesson about parking in front of fire hydrants
Emphasis mine.

And here's the other side of the E30. I'm thinking this was option 2.

Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

The hose looks like it probably could've gone over the car or something, but look at the couplings, how close to the car they are.  It was a pain in the ass to hook those hoses up because some asshole had to park his Beemer there.  They had to work around him, and they shouldn't have to do that while someone's house is burning, so fuck the guy with the Beemer.  No pity here.

Indifference to the car/owner doesn't preclude disdain for people acting out of spite. Like I said, the dude parked like an asshole, not much sympathy there, but damaging the dude's car just because you can is a dick move.

He parked in the red zone next to a fire hydrant. If I did that, my inner monologue would be something like "Welp, hope there's not a fire while I'm parked here."

If I came back and saw my car like that, I'd just kind of hang my head and accept it, since it was my own douchebag gamble.

I don't disagree. I just feel like parking there is acknowledgement and acceptance of terms that "in worst scenario, your shit might get broken."

Oh yes, but that's not spite. Spite is doing it when you don't have to just to....you know....spite the person. If the fire department really needed to do what they did, then such is life.

Notice how they shattered the rear quarter-window, too? Nice.

Nah, that broke because of the force of them slamming on the main rear window.  One of the axe strokes hit the pillar, you can see it.

And we'll just have to disagree on the spite angle.  I'm not indifferent to the owner, I have definite feelings about him and feel that he's an asshole.  The firefighters weren't doing it just because they can, they were doing it because someone has intentionally broken the law in a way that makes their job harder and possibly endangers lives, and he gets away with it all the time.  To me, this wasn't spite; it was justice.  The guy deserves to be punished, obviously no one's been doing it (unless he's so stupid that he continues to park in red zones after getting tickets), so they're doing something about it.

Were the firefighters being dicks by doing this?  Yes.  I'm still fine with it.

Not their job to administer justice. From the Boston FD "The only goal is to get water as quickly as possible." You think breaking out two windows and running the hose through the car was quicker than laying across the hood? And if it makes you feel better, the hose would probably scratch the shit out the hood in the process. Maybe even dent it when it pressurizes :lol

El Barto, that is all common sense that you speak of.  So is parking in front of a hydrant.

Not their job to administer justice.

But then again, one could argue that a lot of social ills come from the "not my job to point out this is wrong" attitude.
