Prog/Metal Vocal Showdown #21: Turunen vs Simmons
« on: July 03, 2014, 06:30:16 AM »
The battle of (arguably) the two best operatic-metal voices in the business.  I'm a little biased, as Nightwish was my first exposure to operatic/symphonic metal.  It was like nothing I'd ever heard before, and one of the top 5 most influential listening moments of my life.  I haven't really gotten into Epica for some reason, so this is a quick and easy vote for me.  Thought I'm not overy fond of her solo material, what she did in Nightwish will be unparalleled for me.

Tarja.

I'm not a very big fan of Epica, but I love Simone's work with Kamelot. Meanwhile I like Nightwish and their music a lot, but I've never cared too much about Tarja as a vocalist (or Anette for that matter). So Simone wins for me.

Also Floor Jansen is the best female symphonic metal vocalist imo.

Simone sounds like Floor in first gear to me - so for the sake of influence and originality I'd vote Tarja.  Not a massive fan of either tbh.

Simone. She's like a younger Amanda Somerville. Tarja was good in Nightwish, but that was it. Her solo stuff sucks.

Being a big Nightwish fan, one would think I'd like Epica as well, but I've always found their music to be very bland. Simone is one hot piece of ass, though.

I'm voting for Tarja.

Given the two albums after they ditched her, I'm tending towards the opinion that Tarja's cod Opera singing was holding Nightwish back. Simone is the one vaguely interesting thing about Epica, and it aint for her singing

For the record, Simone's last name is actually "Simons", not "Simmons".

Tarja has a great voice, but her range and, more importantly, her tone, are very limited.  I loved Nightwish for the first five albums, and while part of that was because of Tarja's powerful vocals, the simple fact is that her musical comfort zone seems to be rather small.  Now ironically, while Epica is not quite as diverse as Nightwish, Simone is a far more versatile singer.  She has a multitude of tones that she can draw upon to add to the flavour of whatever she is singing, going from soft and gentle, to powerful and awe-inspiring, to dark and sultry, to up-beat and poppy and many more besides.  Tarja really just had the high-end operatic vocal thing going for her.  Her attempts at different tones and styles that break out of her operatic box are not really that impressive.  Simone can not only do the opera thing, but she can also branch out a bit more into rock/metal and even more pop-infused styles with her voice.  And it also seems like Simone puts a bit more emotion and feeling into her vocals, while a lot of Tarja's songs just sound like operatic masterclass exercises.  I also believe (although I may be wrong) that Simone also has a much wider range in terms of octaves, as well as a broader range of tones.

So yeah, Simone, by far.
