I stumbled across this old blog where a NY-based vocal coach was asked to listen to 5 classic metal singers (Dickinson, Dio, King Diamond, Ozzy and Halford) and give her take on their abilities. I would love to hear her take on JLB, but I'm pretty sure it would not be good - she puts high value on diction.

Nice!  :tup
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Sorry bro, but I can't stand King Diamond. I can't take his voice seriously.

I'm really surprised she give Rob Halford such high marks, because IMHO he has pitch problems from beginning to end on that track.

I agree, but in terms of raw talent, I think he's definitely the best in that bunch.

I usually find Halford to be pretty pitchy on higher stuff. I often feel the same about Dickinson too, although TNOTB isn't one of his pitchier tracks from the album.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I would give Rob the highest mark of the bunch as well.  Interesting read.

I like how she says that she wants to work with Halford and have him visit the studio.  It's like, um, he doesn't sing like that anymore.  :lol

Also;

It hurt my throat so much to listen to him that I was tempted to ask Cosmo how long his career lasted before he either washed out or needed surgery

:lol  Good research before writing the article.

Wow.  She's amazing.  Deduced that from hearing one song.  It took his fans decades.

Ozzy has decent diction.  I guess she was searching for a compliment.

I'd like her to comment on singers that swear they are the shiznit:  Geoff Tate, Jim Gillette and ?????

I think it makes it more honest that the opinions obviously weren't tainted by any preconceptions whatsoever...

Fair enough, but she shouldn't make comments like that when she obviously has no idea about them IMO.

Huh? Her making comments about the long-term viability of a singer is *exactly* what she should do.

She was sent the songs 'blind,' ie without any sort of identification, so that is kinda the whole point.

Ugh. Geoff Tate is horrible. Even at his peak, absolutely horrible. Have no idea what people see in that guy.

Sure, he had a long career, but he sounded like shit for the vast majority of it. His career endured mostly because of his iconic status.

And he had great musicians, songwriters, producers, and management. He was well taken care of during his solo career and really didn't have to do anything himself. If it wasn't for this, he would've long been forgotten after leaving Sabbath.
