?'s Roulette v2: Openness and Survival - We have a winner!
« on: June 14, 2014, 01:13:30 AM »
Hello everybody!

Last year I ran a song roulette for the first time (thread here). It was fun and I heard a lot of awesome music - so much, in fact, that I haven't had time to check out some of those great bands and artists properly yet. I didn't think I'd get to start another roulette so soon, but luckily I did, since fall would've been a bad time for me because of school and other stuff. To quote James LaBrie, this time I'll do things differently:

-I'm taking in as many participants as possible, and one or two players get eliminated each round.
-Instead of ratings I'll use tiers for ranking: "safe", "in danger" and "eliminated". The one who sends the best song receives immunity and can't be eliminated in the next round.
-I'm thinking of doing 8 rounds, but the number depends on how many participants join in and how I handle the eliminations.
-NO THEMES! You can send anything you want, expect music by the bands in the list below. I made the list shorter this time, dropping some artists whose albums I've heard only once.
-No time limit either, but think carefully whether you want to send me a 10-minute song that might not click after three listens.
-Youtube and Grooveshark links are still ok, but I also accept Spotify now that I have it. PM me the link, and if you need to send a file, ask me for my email address.

Banned bands and artists (stuff that has been good enough to make it to my mp3 player at some point, at least for a while):

You can see what I received in my previous roulette by clicking the link at the beginning of the thread. Those artists aren't banned (unless they appear in the list above), but I'd prefer to hear something new.

Please note that I'm working until the end of the month, so I won't have a lot of time for listening to your submissions on weekdays (Mon-Fri), but I promise to pick up the pace after that. Anyway, stop hesitating and join the game! :D

Yeah, I'm pretty open-minded. Sending hip hop or reggae may be a little risky, though :lol

Think I'll play too. I watched your picks in SA roulette and we have quite a different taste, so it'll be fun being eliminated in the first round!
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I think you have different tastes than me normally, but given some of the songs you liked in your first roulette, I'll give this a shot.

Yo, I might as well join this. I've got crap you don't want to hear.

...I mean... good music that you want to hear. (heh heh heh)

But really, I've got some stuff not on that list I can send.

Ok, now I have 14 participants and I think that's enough. This means we can kick off the game! :metal This is the structure:

Round 1: 14 players, 2 get eliminated
Round 2: 12 players, 2 get eliminated
Round 3: 10 players, 2 get eliminated
Round 4: 8 players, 2 get eliminated
Round 5: 6 players, 2 get eliminated
Round 6: 4 players, 1 gets eliminated
Round 7: 3 players, 1 gets eliminated
Round 8: Championship match between top 2 players

Note: I'm going on a midsummer trip on Thursday and won't come back until Sunday, so please send your submissions on time. I'll do my best to listen to the songs and judge before that to avoid making you wait for a week.

Eliminations in first round never turn out well.  :P

I will double check the list of bands and send something today or tomorrow.

Says you.

I'm loving the elimination style... Other than with Mason, I usually fare well.  Although this time might be different.  My strategy this roulette is to send bands that A) I've never used, and B) bands I haven't seen used by others.  Going obscure this time.

Sending in a moment.

It's Milena, but lynching her won't help much 'cause I've heard most of the songs just once, and two of them zero times :P I'll continue listening tomorrow and post the results on Wednesday.
