Just sayin for SystematicThought and Outcrier... There's a chance I'll delay going.  Gotta finish the Zeppelin discog discussion before I get to this list, so I'll likely drop myself a couple of spots - depending on how long it takes the people above me to go.

#13 - Baseball Stars

Released 1989 for NES

I was a huge baseball fan, and loved playing all types of video baseball games.  This one had no real teams or players, but what it did have was the opportunity to make your own team, create players, sign them to contracts, increase stats, etc.  It was the first sports game on the NES I can remember that had this type of built-in career/General Manager mode.  There was also a quasi-role playing aspect in that each player had a prestige rating and the cumulative prestige of the two teams playing that game determined how much money the winning and losing teams earned.  That money could then be distributed among the players to enhance their skills up to that particular player's max skill points.  Or you could save up the money to acquire pricey free-agent star players.

It was one of the only NES games, and the first baseball game, to have a battery backup so you could keep your created teams, configured leagues & seasons, and cumulative statistics (batting average, HRs, ERA, etc) stored in the game's memory chip.

Gameplay is very simple.  Although the fielding aspect was quite advanced for the time.  Players could actually dive and jump for balls in play.  You could even jump at the outfield fence to rob players of homeruns.  Although the game did not have any real players, you could create real players on your user created team.  There was also a CPU team built into the game called the American Dreams that consisted of players with names and stats reminiscent of Pete Rose, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, etc.

definitely a fun game.  Fairly popular game for the console too - although obviously not as well known as the big hitters for the NES (Metroid, Mario, Zelda, etc).

According to wikipedia, IGN placed it at #28 in its "Top 100 NES Games".  And Yahoo had it at #3 in their top "Old School" sports games

#12 - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

Released 1987 for NES

007-373-5963

It's burned into my brain.

Yeah, the game is a bit tedious (especially the second time around with Don Flamenco), but it is an absolute classic with one of the harder "final bosses" you will see even though you now what is coming.  It was always the talk of elementary school when someone possibly beat Tyson or felt like they were close to doing it.  "Did you hear so and so beat him?"  There were rumors of older brothers or friends from the next town over, but these were always spoken in hushed tones, perhaps in fear of angering the NES gods.

I always enjoyed fighting Mr. Sandman, Soda Popinski, and Super Macho Man.  The timing on Bald Bull's charge was hit or miss for me.  I never did beat Tyson when I was younger, but I dragged out the NES a couple of years ago and gave this game a run again.  After about 2 weeks of fighting Tyson, I finally got the best of him.  Sure, nobody cared now that I was in my 30's, but one of the nemeses of my childhood was finally vanquished.

Someone really needs to make an Andrew Golota Flash game. But yes, MTPO was great fun. Very epic for its time too.

#11 - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Released 1988 for NES

A classic action-RPG.  The changes they introduced in this sequel such as the magic meter and the use of several different spells, as well Dark Link and the combining of an RPG with side scrolling platform action were very cool additions to the series.

Not sure what else to say about this one.  I spent many many hours fighting monsters, warriors and creepy crawlies, and exploring Hyrule in this game.  Truly an adventure!

I'm not really sure why, but I never really got into this game at all. I liked Zelda, I liked platformers, but I just didn't like this game very much. I know it wasn't a distaste for the hybrid of platforming and RPG either, because I remember sinking hours into Faxanadu. Zelda II just never clicked with me.

I can't tell you how much time I sunk into Zelda II and Faxanadu.

I remember Thunderbird being hard as all fuck, then a relatively easy fight with shadow Link.

Just play Ocarina of Time. Done.

I've barely played the first one. I just never got into the 2D Zelda games. Wasn't even on my radar until OoT, by which point it's very difficult to go backwards.

Zelda 2 may be one of the ugliest 1st party NES games. It's always looked like a really bad, extremely rushed fan game to me visually.

Adventure of Link is underrated as hell. I think it gets a bad rap for having a few (albeit pretty annoying) design decisions and for being hard as hell at times. It may not be my favorite Zelda game, but I do think it's still very good, even to this day.

#10 - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Released 2009 for Xbox

This was a fairly popular game.

The single-player campaign is very enjoyable even though it is a bit on the short side.  The multi-player aspect is obviously awesome.  And the co-op Special Ops missions were very fun.  The level of detail and polish throughout all three of the main playable modes is amazing.

This is the game I have played the most over the past few years when I've had the chance.  I can't state how much fun I've had running those multiplayer maps in Team Deathmatch.

Modern Warfare 2; not sure how I feel about this one. The campaign was enjoyable despite its short length and ludicrous story. The multiplayer was ok; I still enjoy playing locally with friends from time to time, though online is a nightmare. Black Ops is far superior in this regard. My favorite part of the game is Spec Ops; getting three stars on some of those missions required strategy and many failed attempts. I particularly enjoyed completing the 2 player missions on Veteran by controlling both players. It is the last good IW CoD, though I have always preferred Treyarch's since WaW.

CoD was not the FPS franchise I played.  I played the first 2 Bad Company Battlefield's.  No reason why, just picked up that franchise instead.  Might've had something to do with CoD being more known for the multi-player... which as a fogey, I totaly suck at.  I can't play online multi-player worth shit.  I'm dead within, oh... 4 seconds usually.

MW1 was, in my opinion, the best FPS ever made. MW2 had so many glitches and hacks, it was unplayable. I also hated how unbalanced the perks were. There was no reason why someone should ever be able to go 18-0 using just knives.

It's only a cliche if you're down there too.

I think a limited number or the first run were done in gold cartridges only or something. Regardless, the copies of Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 I have are both gold. They might be worth something if the original cases weren't smushed to all hell. I still wouldn't get rid of them though, too much nostalgia there.

#9 - Contra

Release 1988 for NES

For me, THE definitive run 'n' gun co-op.  This was originally an arcade cabinet released to little fanfare, but once ported to the NES, it became a smash hit and remains popular to this day.  Based on the box, it seems obvious they were trying to play off the huge success of 80's action flicks starring Schwarzenegger and Stallone, plus the addition of Aliens, with the US release.

Some of the weapon upgrades are pretty useless/terrible, but once you got the spread gun, you did everything in your power not to lose it.  You obviously didn't want to die, but you also tried like heck not to shoot the other upgrade egg things while you were killing the enemy.

Also notable for being the game that popularized the Konami code, although we knew it as the Contra code.  For some reason, whoever had the second controller always found it a laugh riot to sabotage the entering of the code while the first player was trying to enter it, causing many resets of the NES followed by arm punches.
