22 - Digital Devil Saga
PS2 - Atlus - 2005

Atlus returns, already. Technically, this is not a Shin Megami Tensei game. In Japan, it was released as Digital Devil Saga - Avatar Tuner, and here as Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. That said, I consider this a Shin Megami Tensei game. The spells have the same names, the monsters are the same, the music is by Shoji Meguro, and we see the Press Turn system again. So yeah, this is an SMT game. The only difference is that instead of summoning demons, this time, YOU ARE THE DEMONS! Ancient meme use? Yes. But it is true, you really are the demons. Or people who turn into demons.

To be clear, this time I'm talking about both DDS and DDS2, but before you cry foul, rather than two games it's really more like one game on two discs that weren't released at the same time. The second game picks up right where the first left off, and the only major differences in the system are the addition of an extra type of equipment, and a mostly superficial change to the levelling system.

In true SMT form, we have really great music here. Really, really great. Dat bassline in The Hunted, dat riff in Comrades, dat Harihara, dem reprises and remixes in the second game. Also in SMT form, we have ridiculously brutal secret bosses. The hardest of these in the first game is the Demi-Fiend, otherwise known as the protagonist of the previously discussed Nocturne. This boss is really cool, because his battle theme is the random battle theme from his game...which is sort of an insult, if you think about it. What, I don't register as a boss to this guy? And then he takes a turn.

And no, you do not register as a fucking boss to this guy. Not even a late game random encounter. You're like when he is doing some side quest clean up and compendium finishing before the final boss, and he gets a random encounter in the first dungeon. My characters are all max level, with specially built skill sets, and painstakingly maxed-out stats. This guy can still wipe the floor with me in a single turn. I've never beaten him. He is a challenge fit for only the most insanely dedicated and meticulous of gamers, and although you need to be pretty goddamn dedicated and meticulous to even unlock this boss, he's a whole order of magnitude nastier. I've unlocked most of the secret bosses in the second game, but I'm nowhere close to ready for them.

If I have to choose one of these games or the other as the best, I would say the first game.

21 - Saya no Uta
PC - Nitroplus - 2003

So here we have another Visual Novel, and this one is an Eroge. As I mentioned before, I love this game in spite of the pornographic content, not because of it.

However, unlike many Eroge I don't think you could take the erotic scenes out of this game and have it remain as effective as it is. Mostly this is because this is actually a horror game, and these scenes add to the horror and disgust element after certain revelations.

All that being said, this game is a work of art. It's only about eight hours long, and only features two choices. Despite this it is one of the most romantic, disgusting, beautiful, horrifying, hopeful, and depressing stories ever written. Saya no Uta, which translates as Song of Saya (or Saya's Song), tells the story of a young man who is left with an altered perception of reality after a car accident. Basically, everything becomes disgusting to him. Everything he smells, smells like rotten meat. Everything he tastes makes him gag. People look like hideous monsters, awful Lovecraftian horrors, writhing tentacles with too many eyes and mouths, and their voices sound like awful screeching. All people, except for one girl: the titular Saya.

I can't explain much more than that without spoiling, but the best thing I can say about the story is that it's written by Urobuchi Gen. Some people may recognize this name as being the guy who wrote the extraordinary anime Puella Magi Madoka Magicka, the light novels Fate/Zero, adapated into an equally extraordinary anime of the same name, as well as a bunch of other great anime. If you're familiar with any of his work, you know how effectively he can rip out your heart and make you watch him eat it. He's an evil genius, and in my opinion this game is his best work.

Also there is a really crappy American comic book adaptation, don't even touch it.

20 - Tales of the Abyss
PS2/3DS - Namco Bandai - 2006/2012

The Tales of... series is immense, but Tales of the Abyss is definitely the best in the series. While later games have improved upon the battle system, this game is still notable for two primary reasons (these will come up a lot in my list): Story and music.

For one, Tales of the Abyss has a dark story. Not as a dark as anything in the Shin Megami Tensei series, but one of the darkest games in the Tales series (I think Vesperia might take the title of darkest, considering the main character straight up murders a bunch of people in cold blood), and pretty dark for JRPGs in general. It deals with some interesting themes, and I think is a lot more focussed thematically than many games in the genre. One of the most brilliant parts of the plot is a spoiler, but I will discuss it in smalltext for those who don't care: The villain is trying to avert a prophecy that fortells the end of the world. His plan is to make an exact copy of the world, but this process will destroy the original world. The part I really like is that it's made clear near the end of the game that the villain realizes that he's actually fulfilling the prophecy, but has resolved to see it through, partly because of a 'well I've come this far' attitude, and also because he's kind of crazy. I can tell I haven't conveyed this very well because it sort of comes across as stupid the way I explained it...but in context of everything it works great, trust me.

As mentioned before, the music in this game is awesome. The boss theme, "The Fang that Wants Blood", the theme for recurring fights against the for-lack-of-a-better-term evil party, "Awkward Justice", as well as the whole sequence of final boss themes are just amazing.

If you've never played a Tales games before, this is a great one to try out. If you have a 3DS, that version should be pretty easy to find.

Great write ups, I didn't enjoy DDS1/2 as much as most other SMT titles, but it was still extremely fun and addicting when judged alone and I enjoyed my time with them; but I actually haven't replayed them since the first time...I may have to boot up my emulator soon. It's also tied as my favorite SMT soundtrack (with SMT IV, surprisingly). Haven't heard or played Saya, but the logo immediately reminded me of Mushishi so  :tup:lol And I really love Abyss, it's my second favorite behind Symphonia; great memories with all these games. I have a feeling if I ever do a list, mine might be kinda boring since already we have similar titles (and some of the same...just different placements).  :tup

Also agreed on the idea that the DDS games were meant to be played as one big game. I'm actually thinking about getting the pentagram logo as my next tattoo.  :police:

I've heard some really good things about the Tales series, specially this game and it's story. It has gained a high position on my to-play list now :tup. Also the rest of the titles on this update seem really interesting.

Yes, I know, poor wording on my part, I should have said favorite SMT soundtrack. Hence my 'surprisingly', but yeah that wasn't conveyed well.  :tup Oops! Edited.

Yeah when I found out, a few weeks before SMTIV's release, I was really, really crushed. Like, surprisingly so.  :lol I love the music SO much and listen to it on a daily basis. But I really, really love SMTIV's music, it captured that techno-apocalyptic vibe that Meguro did perfectly almost just as well. In some cases I think he did just as well for the vibe of IV.

Picture sizes are all wonky this time.

19 - Devil May Cry 3
PS2 - Capcom - 2005

I think that most fans of the Devil May Cry series would agree that the third game is the best one. The first game is a close second, but I generally feel like the third game is a more refined version of the original, although the first game does get a bit of a bonus for the horror vibe that was pretty much dropped in future entries (since the first game was originally conceived as a Resident Evil game).

DMC3 stands out, to me, for a few reasons. One is the return of the enormous, fully connected explorable area from the first game, but on a bigger, more badass looking scale. Second is that this is the first game where Dante's attitude is really turned up to eleven, and it's all delightfully cheesy in a B-movie kinda way. The addition of styles was also great (though I pretty much always use Trickster), this plus the larger arsenal at your disposal allows for a great deal of freedom in the way that you play. And what would a Devil May Cry game be without awesome boss fights? Devil May Cry 2, I guess. This game has a lot of really great, challenging, fun boss fights, standouts include the very final boss fight, the fight against Lady in the library, and the succubus-bat-lightning lady. At higher difficulties these fights require insane precision and attention, but I love a challenge, and beating these enemies is very gratifying.

The music is also pretty cool, but not a really major factor in my appreciation for this game. This time it's all gameplay and attitude, baby.

18 - Planescape: Torment
PC - Black Isle - 1999

So low? Yeah, sorry. But we've left Japan for a moment to look at the best RPG ever made outside of the Land of the Rising Sun. This game is not the most attractive, it certainly shows its age, and I'm not generally a fan of D&D based combat, but neither of those things are what this game's about. Planescape Torment is all about story and character.

It's hard to articulate how amazing the writing in this game is. It's been compared to a novel before, and I think that's very fair. I'm hard pressed to name other games that have been as emotionally engaging as this one. My absolute favorite moment in this game has to be one of the stones in the Sensate area. For those who haven't played the game, these stones allow someone to experience someone else's experiences which have been recorded onto them. One stone puts you into the mind of someone your character knows. I won't go into detail, to avoid spoilers, but goddamn...definitely one of the most emotional moments in any video game. You really have to read it for yourself.

I feel like my total lack of understanding of the D&D ruleset that was in place when this game was made increased the difficulty for me. I died a lot. The last dungeon was a nightmare. I don't know if I actually beat the final boss, if I did I think I had to cheat. I'm not entirely sure if this game is really hard or I'm just bad at it, but the story is what makes this game great, not the gameplay.

17 - Guilty Gear
Arcade - Arc System Works - 1998-Present

Back to Japan for a game that's about as different from Planescape Torment as possible. Where Torment is thoughtful and subtle, Guilty Gear kicks your door in, bangs your girlfriend, and sets the house on fire, all while playing a sweet guitar solo. This game is what happens when anime and heavy metal have a baby. Literally. Half of the cast are references to rock and metal, see: Eddie, Testament, Venom, Slayer, Millia Rage, A.B.A, Chipp Zanuff, etc etc.

Of course, the music matches. Some standout tracks include Awe of She (the GGX version, not XX), Keep Yourself Alive, Keep the Flag Flying... pretty much the entire soundtrack is excellent.

Combine that with the most hype fighting game this side of Marvel vs Capcom, and you have a winner.

And if I have to choose one game in the series as my favourite, I'll go with Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, though when Xrd comes out later this year that may change.

16 - Resident Evil 4
PS2/GCN - Capcom - 2005

I will admit that I'm not really a fan of the Resident Evil series in general. Resident Evil 4 stands out as a masterpiece in a pretty mediocre series (in my opinion).

This game is one of the greatest games of the Survival Horror genre. In my opinion, the core of Survival Horror gameplay is resource management. It may seem odd, then, to claim that a game which makes bullets and healing items relatively easy to find is a paragon of the genre, but the resource you need to manage is different. No, not Ashley. It's space. If enemies get up on you, many of them can kill you in one hit, so the whole thing is about managing to keep your distance. You have one bullet left in your clip, what do you do? Do you shoot right away and reload? Do you back off before shooting to give you more time to reload? Do you go crazy and try to knife the zombie to death? You're constantly evaluating these choices, where in, say, Silent Hill, you're always weighing whether this monster is dangerous enough to use one of your scant bullets on, or is your health low enough that you need to use a precious healing item. But more on that series later.

For a horror game, you've gotta talk about the monsters. The most pants-shittingly terrifying creature in this game is of course the Regenerator. I'm sure everyone who's played the game just shivered. The awful noise these things make is the worst part. There you are, walking along, thinking "Hey, maybe the worst thing I'll need to kill in this room is a guy with a scythe that pops out of his neck", when that awful breathing sound starts. You begin to carefully search for the dangerous beast, and then you bump into it after rounding a corner and it hugs you to death. What a bastard.

There is one bad thing about this game, and I've already mentioned her. While this game has a pretty good execution of the escort mission concept, escort missions suck. They only sort of work in a horror game because you have a second character whose life you fear for, but it's generally pretty easy to keep Ashley safe, since her awful shrieking will let you know she's in trouble. The parts of the game where Ashley is not with you are the best parts. The part where you have to play as her can go to hell.

15 - G-Senjou no Maou
PC - Akabeisoft2 - 2008

Another Eroge~! Unlike the previously mentioned Saya no Uta, this one could really do just fine without the explicit sex. For story reasons the characters would still need to sleep together, but it doesn't need to be shown in great detail. In this game I actually skipped through the sex scenes because the story was so engaging. I would think "Why are you fucking NOW?! THINGS ARE HAPPENING". I think this a lot during these games.

G-Senjou no Maou translates as "The Devil on G-String", and that's like a musical G-string, not what you were thinking. It references the main character's love of classical music, and Maou, or the Devil, is the pseudonym the villain uses.

In this story, the main character is the adoptive son of a yakuza boss, and takes part in the administration of his father's business. One day a new criminal, Maou, begins to move in on their territory, and the main character is asked to help find him. This story is a brilliant psychological crime thriller, with a somewhat unusual structure. Rather than a number of routes, the story progresses through chapters, each focusing on a crime committed by Maou that relates to one of the game's heroines. Certain choices made during these chapters will allow you to basically bail out of the story at that point with that girl, but I don't recommend it. None of the side routes compare to the main route for the primary heroine. This is a dark, disturbing, beautiful, romantic story, and a really great experience all around.

14 - Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
PS1 - Game Arts/JAM - 1999

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete on Playstation is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. The music is absolutely outstanding, the battle system is fun and challenging, the storyline manages to be original despite being full of JRPG tropes.

The villain has to be one of my favorite parts of this game. He is an absolute ham. Every opportunity he has to chew the scenery, he takes. He's also one of the original long-haired pretty boy villains (keep in mind the original version of the game came out in 1992).

As I mentioned before, the battle system is also a highlight, for two main reasons: First, in something still relatively uncommon in JRPGs today, both enemies and player characters will move around the battle field to do their attacks (or even just for strategic purposes). Where this really becomes in important factor is the area of effect attacks. In most JRPGs spells hit one thing, or everything. This is one of the few I can think of where there are Area of Effect attacks. (and if some of you are thinking, hey I know another game with that, there will be another game with that on this list).

The music is another highlight, Noriyuki Iwadare created some classic JRPG music. Just listen to that world map theme, or the final boss theme. It's just so perfect.

As you might have guessed, because I cited the hammy villain as a plus, this game is also really, really funny. The writing is great throughout; the characters are all well-developed and have interesting personal arcs in the game.

The sequel is also great, and has one of the hardest final bosses (with one of the most badass final boss themes) ever, but I think the first game is generally better.

Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece but i wouldn't say it's good as REmake any old RE when it comes to Survival Horror.
That said, if leaving genres out of this, it's the best game in the series imo.

RE4 will always be one of my favorite games of all time, and isn't my favorite RE but is up there around 2 or 3 depending on the day. LOVE me some Lunar! I tried going back and playing it and it's better kept in my nostalgia but it's still one of my fondest times.

13 - Pokemon
GB/GBA/DS/3DS - Nintendo - 1998-2014

So, really, do I have to pick one? I have to at least pick two: HeartGold and SoulSilver. I don't even know where to start. Everyone knows why I love Pokemon, right? It's Pokemon. That's why.

Need more? Okay. The combat system manages to be extremely complicated while being easy to understand on the surface. The graphics are always charming, and while the designs of the Pokemon themselves haven't always been the best (Gen V), the Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and evil team members and leaders always look cool.

Here's yet another game/series where the music is a highlight. I've always been partial to battle themes, and here is no different: the Gen III gym leader, Gen IV champion, HG/SS champion themes… all brilliant. Cynthia's might be my favorite in the series.

If you haven't played a Pokemon game before, what? Come on.

12 - Final Fantasy IX
PS1 - Squaresoft - 2000

Yes, Final Fantasy IX is the best Final Fantasy game. No, it isn't VI, but it's close. It's certainly not VII.

The first reason is the character development system. I really enjoy learning abilities from equipment, and it adds a bit of an extra challenge needing to hold on to inferior equipment so you can learn an ability (though I can see how some people might find this frustrating).

The story is great, though it goes a bit off the rails in the final act, the early parts of the game more than make up for the sorta weak finish. The story focuses a lot on character, and the interactions between the party members are much better written than most of the rest of the games in this series.

Of course, this is Final Fantasy before Nobuo Uematsu's departure, so we have excellent music. The boss theme is one of my favorites, and we also get excellent tracks like Assault of the Silver Dragons. Just excellent.

11 - Touhou
PC-98/PC - Team Shanghai Alice - 1996-2014

I had no idea what to use as a picture here, so I just went with a picture of Reimu since that's who I play. I picked this one because it was sorta cool and not too enormous.

I'm really gonna defend not choosing a single game, this time. If you've ever played a Touhou game, you can back me up in saying each game is about forty-five minutes long. Gun to my head… I suppose it'd be Subterranean Animism. (but the worst one is definitely Highly Responsive to Prayer, being that it's a goddamn shitty Arkanoid-thing and not Touhou at all)

But as I said, I'm really talking about the series as a whole (well…the whole-numbered Windows danmaku games not including Phantasmagoria of Flower View).

Talking about what's great about Touhou, you really have to start with the gameplay. You can look at videos and screenshots all day and not even really grasp how insanely difficult, ruthless, frustrating, and yet rewarding these games are. Sure, the first twenty times you bash your head against Okuu or Kanako you want to smash your computer, but when you see that bitch finally explode, there's no better feeling on earth.

Visually, the best part about the game is certainly the Spell Cards. Again, this is really hard to describe. A video can sort of express what I mean, but boss fights are basically just a matter of trying to stop yourself from getting killed by beautiful, colorful shapes. Yuyuko is an excellent example: the most terrifying butterflies on earth. Byakuren's spaceship attack is awesome to look at while insanely tense to try to stay alive in. Suwako also has some crazy looking attacks.

And what discussion of Touhou could be complete without talking about the music? Rather than try to express how great it is in text, I'll just leave a few titles you can check out on Youtube: Necrofantasia, Native Faith, Nuclear Fusion, Lunatic Princess, Voyage 1970, True Administrator… the list goes on and on and on. You may also find versions of these songs in numerous other genres. The music from this series is so great there are multiple bands that do adaptations of Touhou music, Demetori is a great example for these forums, as they take a progressive metal approach to it, but there's also IOSYS and Silver Forest, who have made pop songs based on Touhou. And of course, there's Bad Apple!!. Great song, great music video. This is one example where the cover has completely eclipsed the original song (partly because it's from a PC-98 game), I don't even know what the original version of Bad Apple sounds like.

It takes very little commitment on your part to try a Touhou game. If you want to start with an easy one, I recommend Imperishable Night. It was the first one I managed to beat with no continues. On easy, that is.

Hmm, interesting to hear FFIX is your favorite. I appreciated the system of skills as well, especially after VIII. I also liked the fixed character classes and magic abilities.

I also didn't beat Ozma, and never will at this point. Did anybody else?

Pokemon :heart

I love how the battle system is far more complex than it looks, especially once you get in to competitive battling. It is easily one of my favorite RPG series. I can literally spend hundreds of hours playing and still be engaged.

You're in now.

Thanks.
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol
My anime can beat up your anime.

Still talking about FFIX, main quest aside, i always loved the Chocobo Hot and Cold sidequest. Digging Chocographs, hunting for treasures all over the world, getting new types of chocobos, fun stuff  :)

I notice FF9 is almost unanimously loved, but it's actually one of my least favourites. I still enjoy it though!

Touhou is probably the only game I've played from this list (except Oblivion), and the series are certainly ruthless. I have enough pride to not click "easy" or "normal" every time, and it turns out to be a great amount of suffering. Seriously, this game requires a lot of concentration and patience. In the past, I used to play it before my Starcraft II matches, along with osu! to get warmed up.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

When I first heard about Gold and Silver being remade...I just about peed myself. Like literally, I was like "OH MY GOD YE-" *runs to bathroom*. It made my year, and it's still one of my fondest memories apart from popping in Blue so in my grey brick those many eons ago. It's a great remake and started an awesome trend in 'remake an oldie right after a new gen'. I've still got some of my original Pokemon from the game that I transffered game-by-game and still use them in my X/Y games and will hopefully be able to in OR/AS.

Final Fantasy IX is up there with my favorite FF games, but I don't think it's ever been my absolute favorite. It's definitely got something special about it and I really fell in love with the medieval world they created; it was and in some ways still is my own personal perfect definition of what I think of when I think 'Final Fantasy' for some reason. I've always thought that vibe just fit like a glove for the era it came out and despite being overshadowed by the PS2's release, still was a great moment in gaming history. Like other games that came before it, it was an awesome last hurrah for a system.
