I didn't think it was as bad as 2012 Huntington, in which all I could hear was guitar though.

It seems I was extremely lucky in Mexico City. The sound was probably one of the best I've ever heard live (being Roger Waters - Dark Side of the Moon in 2006 the absolute best). It wasn't loud-painful, it was powerful, it was balanced, it was awesome.

I remember in January the sound dropped out several times, and the frequencies were pretty fucked up as well.

Riverside sounded particularly amazing.

But yeah, since my first time seeing them in 1994, DT has always had a "louder is better" live approach.  At first, I thought it was to hide any mistakes or gaffs.  But I think it was just the mentality of metal bands coming from the 80's (to be the heaviest and loudest ever).

Seriously, it is so weird that *the* band comprised of top-notch musicians is the one that has consistently struggled the most with having a good sound, both live and on record.

Chipping in to say that I saw them in Sheffield UK back in July and they sounded great. I have been to DT shows that were painfully loud, but July was loud but with a lot of room in the mix.

Having seen Extreme the night before who were ridiculously loud to the point that it was just white noise, I could make a good comparison.

I agree rumborak.....It just seems so obvious really. I don't know how or why a "mature" band like DT manage to sound so bad at times.

I know that DT isn't Steven Wilson's cup of tea, but it would be amazing to have Steven mix a DT record. Let alone, produce it.

Considering that one loses hearing sensitivity continuously, your logic is flawed.

Honestly, I always think that somebody should bring a sound meter to the venue and measure it. I'm pretty sure they're violating state law with their volumes.

Regardless, I am joking with that.  I always am reminded of the scene from Airheads when someone says its too loud.

In my experience, I haven't noticed DT being any louder than other metal bands I have seen.

That may be so, but DT's music is of a complexity that you can't just crank it to the standard metal bands' level where all you hear (and all you really need to hear) is chugga-chugga.

True, but many people still go to the concerts to see a metal show.  I am not arguing against you, id prefer a less loud and more clear concert, but my experiences have generally been fine.

While I'm not at all for loud concerts, I think suggesting someone bring a sound meter to a gig because of volume laws is an indication you're getting too old. :lol

When I remember, I bring earplugs. It doesn't sound as good as a lower volume gig, but at some venues I don't think it's really possible.

Interesting.

For myself, there's nothing that really bothers me too much, I just accept it as the way they want it, like if John Petrucci wants to write about ghouls and ghosts for an album or whatever.

However, I see countless posts year after year about the struggles but the problem is that they go from "sounds great" to "sounds shit" from one post to the next.  It seems to me like we could just say all the opinions just cancel each other out and stop endlessly obsessing over it... but then where's the fun in that.

If nothing else, the set list on Luna Park destroys the one on Score.  Score does have some spectacular performances of Octavarium, The Spirit Carries On, Raise the Knife and Afterlife, but Luna Park is more consistently high quality, IMO.

Bit late to the party, but the Strange Deja Vu clip is great! I got goosebumps at the choruses when the real strings came in. Makes me wonder what SFAM as a whole would sound like with a real orchestra.

I would argue that, if the posts cancel out, which means 50% of the people saying the sound isn't good, you have a problem.

I hate to say this, but although I was really looking forward to this DVD, the mixing of the orchestra really, really bothers me. In the SDV video, from 2:49 you can see the orchestra playing but you can barely hear them. And I have a pretty great stereo set. I had to strain to hear them on both my stereo set and on my decent headphones (Sennheiser HD205). The mixing of the Orchestra on Score was way better. I'm really disappointed.

The Vancouver show in April had a perfect sound level.  It was loud, but not overly loud, and you could hear everybody well.

Maybe it is because sound is purely a matter of taste. I doubt that guys haven't liked the sound on their album after finishing it but try to find a sound that fits for every fan's ear :)

It was so annoying to figure you meant "Strange Deja-Vu" and realizing they didn't release a preview of Space-Dye Vest yet. We really need to cut it out with abbreviations :P

would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Was deciding whether to purchase this from the DT site or not (the BR/CD version). In the end I couldnt justify the price - just checked Amazon UK and its currently listed at £10.88 for the Blu Ray!
