I can think of two things:

1. Stonehenge. Nice area and everything, and the historical significance of the place is definitely there, but as a monument it is a bit ... disappointing. If you see it anywhere on photos, you'll notice that more often than not it's photographed from below, to make it look bigger.

2. Turkish ice cream. Sounds random, but before I went to Turkey, I got inundated with "OMGWTF, you have to try Turkish ice cream". It's awful. It's a rubbery substance with little taste whose only redeeming quality is that you can do stupid tourist stunts with (due to its rubbery nature). Much better than Turkish ice cream: Turkish beer ("Efes").

Versailles. Too many people in a rather short and highly directed walk-through of the residence, and far too much ground to actually take in and appreciate. Furthermore, the fountains are most of what you go to see out there and they run them for like one hour, twice a day, two weekends a month.

The Romans did it much, much better.

First thing that came to mind is The Dark Knight Rises. Especially after I had already lowered my expectations cause I knew nothing would touch Ledger's Joker and my love for that perfect character.

Bioshock Infinite is another...but my expectations were through the roof. I loved the tone, atmosphere and general feel to the first two...having it all out in the open, despite the gorgeous locale, was disappointing and the game itself was fun as hell; but if you can't get into the world it's all kinda 'just there'.

Many Game of Thrones episodes after expecting certain scenes/characters to appear/happen.

That's all the comes to mind right now... Haven't seen too many geological or man-man structures that inspire anything but a breif 'oh neat'. I really wanna go cave diving someday though, or stare into a huge sinkhole, or dive into the mariana trench. Something that goes into the abyss of the Earth, that shit really gets me goin. And by that I mean it gives me a boner. A real nice boner.

RIP DTP.

Oh, Heath Ledger's Joker. He wasn't bad, but didn't really live up to the hype his death afforded him.

Really? Did you see it up close or just from the visitor's center?

I was in awe the whole time we were there but we booked a tour that allowed us to go in the circle. I understand that's a bit unusual now and I'd certainly be disappointed to see it from 1/4 mile away I suppose.

I mean, yes they are legend and I love their studio recording albums. I'd waited them for years to come to Turkey and they did and it was totally disaster. Bruce's voice was a joke and their whole performance was just "meh".

I saw it from up front, i.e. as close as you can get to it from that perimeter. (quite pricey, the entrance fee also, given how zero-maintenance the monument really is).
I don't know, over the years I had been exposed to all the hype ("how can prehistoric humans have lifted this?!!"), but when I saw it I thought "with a bit of basic engineering, there's definitely ways".

Oh god, yes. The Mona Lisa is tiiiiny.

I have heard Mount Rushmore is quite underwhelming when you see it in real life.

I've heard that from several people.   Usually something to the effect of...."If you've seen it on a postcard, you've seen it."

Mount Rushmore is cool to see, even if you can't get that close. It's still a gorgeous view.

The London Eye felt like a waste of a ride. I was expecting at least some kind of guideline as to what you can see.

About right when you see it from 20' away peering over the heads of dumfounded gawkers.

Definitely this. Very boring and unimpressive, I thought. It's a shame because there's a lot of great art in that section of the Louvre, and the majority of people walk past all that and just queue up to see the Mona Lisa and then leave. Cretins.

What kinda underwhelmed me was the Sistine Chapel actually. I think part of its hype comes from the fact that a lot of tourists simply go into the Vatican to see this one single thing. So, they rush through the rooms, and when they see the fresco, it's of course very impressive. If you've been paying attention up to that point, there were a ton of beautiful frescos and paintings, and the one in the Sistine Chapel is just one of them then.
Also, there's a genuine van Gogh in a room right after the Sistine Chapel. The hordes all pass it because they're done with their sightseeing.

wat

I say "wat" to myself about that too. For some reason, I just couldn't get into the game the same way I did with the first one; even though on every level I could measure, it was better save for the Jedi. I recently met someone who holds exactly the same experiences as me, so I'm not crazy, I swear!

Unless we're both crazy.
