King Crimson- 21st Century Schizoid Man (7.5)

Extremely hard to believe this was released in 1969.

No matter how many times I listen to that song I always think exactly the same thing.

Yeah, I figured I had to send the KC before someone else got to 'em. It was either that, Marillion, or Yes, and now they are all off the table.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this question but I don't think there should be. I mean unless it ventures into 20-30 min territory I guess it could be considered an album side lol.

Yeah… There are a couple songs I was thinking about at around the 20 minute mark, but I figured it might be best to hold off on that. I feel like it's really difficult to rate songs of that scope next to the shorter songs, and not entirely fair to either.

Round 3: 90's-10's

As I imagined, the competition here is very tight. Coming across some nice musical discoveries and no one is really sending anything way out of my interests.

senecadawg2

Brand New - Luca (7.5)

Really like the melody of the music and vocals. Interesting song writing with regards to metaphorical lyrics etc. Reminds me of dredg or Thrice to some extent. Really powerful finish!

Nekov

Demains - Naive (7.5)

Oh wow! I really dig the intro of this song going from the nice acoustic to powerful electric guitar. Decent vocals, I caught a hint of an accent and looked up that the singer is French... it's not distracting, just noticed it. I Like the uplifting tone and lyrics.

Big Hath

Bruce Dickinson - Book of Thel (8.0)

Although I do know much about Dickinson through Maiden, I haven't gotten very far into his solo career as I've only heard "Balls to Picasso" in the past. Awesome guitar intro catches my attention right away. Definitely seems to be a much more aggressive vocal approach from Bruce here which isn't bad, just a little different. Nice riffs throughout, VERY cool drums little over halfway. Good tune!

lonestar

The Deadstation - Subsistence Defined (7.0)

Bam! Not sure I was ready for that scream at the start..lol. Can hear many influences on the band in this song. The vocals feel a little strained to me at times but when the music quiets down he really shines IMO. There's lots here I like musically but it seems a little by the numbers for this style and that's the only real knock I have on it.

Ultimetalhead

Foxy Shazam - Oh Lord (7.5)

Have heard lots of people talking about this band. I really like the boisterous type style. The vocals while good, seem raw at points but I guess it's just part of the style he's going for. It wouldn't be necessarily fair to expect Freddie Mercury just because the look and style seem similar...lol. I enjoy the upbeat lyrics and catchiness of the song.

Evermind

Kamelot - Nothing Ever Dies (7.5)

"Power metal" style bands can be hit or miss with me but you guys have been pretty good finding good tunes to send. Like the big vocals, nice riffs and solo here. Lyrically it seems a bit scattered but I really enjoy the tune.

jingle.boy

WarMachine - Dust to Dust (6.0)

I really like the guitar here throughout but the vocals throw me off. I don't think the singer's voice is bad or anything, just his phrasing in this song maybe?

Dr. DTVT

Enslaved - Death in the Eyes of Dawn (7.0)

Interesting to hear the acoustic guitar underneath behind the whole song. I am still coming around to growls and find that I like certain styles better than others. I honestly am a bit off-put by the growling vocals here but as I mentioned before I like it when its not just that way through the whole song. And as it turns out I REALLY like the clean vocals in this song so the fact that they mixed it up definitely helps.

orcus116

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You (6.0)

This is kind of laid back alternative. Not a bad song but not a lot stands out. Its a little straight forward for my tastes in this style of rock. Its a little poppy and catchy.

Lucien

The Enid - Tripping the Light Fantastic (8.0)

Wow! Don't even know how to describe the sound of this. It's like Pink Floyd and a Disney film soundtrack mixed together... Really very neat!

Standings after round 3:

1.Big Hath: 16 (8.0) = 24
2.lonestar: 15.5 (7.0) = 22.5
3.Ulitmetalhead: 15 (7.5) = 22.5
4.senecadawg2 14.5 (7.5) = 22
5.Nekov: 14.5 (7.5) = 22
6.Evermind: 14 (7.5) = 21.5
7.Dr. DTVT: 13.5 (7.0) = 20.5
8.jingle.boy: 14 (6.0) = 20
=============

9.Lucien: 11.5 (8.0) = 19.5
10.orcus116: 13 (6.0) = 19

As I noted we have to whittle down the field as we get further along so that the competition is much tighter for the finals. Want to say thanks so much to Lucien and orcus116 for their submissions.

Lucien provided a discovery of The Enid with an exceptionally enchanting song "Tripping the Light Fantastic" and orcus116's submission of Death's punk song "Politicians In My Eyes" was really quite cool. Thank you very much guys!

Round 4 is back to 60's-80's and with first elimination complete SCORING RESETS...

My favorite part of the song is also the intro and I love the contrasts between the acoustic and electric guitars all along the song. I'll be sending later from the office.

Round 4: 60's-80's

Competition is getting tougher and maybe the scoring is too? Or maybe I just had a bad couple of days lol... seriously some interesting selections on the whole, just a little off from the beginning rounds but found some good stuff here too :)

Big Hath

Tower of Power - Squib Cakes (8.0)

Mmmmmmmm nice break beat intro and then come the HORNS! I've always heard lots about the quality of TOP's music and it's absolutely here. Although I'm a big fan of certain R&B, Soul and Funk I don't listen to it nearly enough. Obviously superb groove throughout here and that organ is getting busy all over this song.

jingle.boy

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression Pt.2)  (7.0)

I've heard bits of this song on classic rock radio and honestly didn't know it came from this group. Classic intro before Emerson goes to work really carrying this song but I enjoy the drums a bunch here as well.

Nekov

Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays - Ozark (6.5)

Very upbeat piece. Really enjoy the interplay between the guitar and piano. Particularly impressed with the piano performance.

senecadawg2

Electric Light Orchestra - Sweet Talkin' Woman (5.5)

Ok here's a slightly funny little backstory... As you can see above jingle sent me ELP and when he did I emailed back with the wrong acronym of ELO and he responded...

Emerson, Lake & Palmer > Electric Light Orchestra.

SO,does that hold true in this instance for me?... I think it does :/

My brother enjoyed ELO quite a bit when we were growing up and there are a few songs I do really like by the band (Turn to Stone, Evil Woman, Don't Bring Me Down, etc.). I was hoping a deeper cut would give me a different insight into the band but this particular song just doesn't really do much different than the songs I know by them and doesn't do it any better IMO.

lonestar

Triumph - Headed For Nowhere (6.0)

Saw that Steve Morse played on this track and kept waiting to see where it would take off. It finally did towards the end and it really saved the song for me. The song was a fair tune but I'd probably had preferred to listen to the guitar track the whole way through cause that was quite sweet.

Evermind

Jon Lord - Sarabande (6.5)

Nice, nice groove and mellow guitar to start. The synths and percussion really stand out in this track. Probably would have enjoyed it even more with some Coverdale vocals somewhere here lol, but aside from that very nice composition overall.

Ultimetalhead

Candlemass - At The Gallows End (7.5)

Definitely has a Sabbathy vibe music-wise. The singer clearly pushes the limits a little considering his vocal abilities but it's not bad. Really right down my alley with the riffs and guitar though. Pretty cool!

Dr.DTVT

Worlds - The Fifth Wheel (6.5)

Comes in with an interesting mystical-like sound to begin which I thought was neat and then picks up. Actually reminds me of 80's prog style, almost Queensryche-esque. Musically lots going on underneath through the course of the song and it works.

Current standings after Round 4:

1.Big Hath: (8.0)
2.Ulitmetalhead: (7.5)
3.jingle.boy: (7.0)
4.Dr. DTVT: (6.5)
5.Evermind: (6.5)
6.Nekov: (6.5)
7.lonestar: (6.0)
8.senecadawg2: (5.5)

On to Round 5 with songs from the 90's-10's again!
