Computer speaker issue....
« on: March 26, 2014, 01:02:45 AM »
Ok.   My laptop speakers cut in and out completely randomly.   But my headphones work fine....not a single problem.   This gets really annoying when I'm trying to play a YouTube video for my wife or son, and the audio keeps cutting in and out.

IRRITATING!!!   >:( :censored

Anyone know what the issue may be?

Does it do it for every application? Or only for youtube videos?

Everything...though less often with something like my Windows Media player.   It is certainly more pronounced with YouTube.

Sounds like it could be a software problem. I'm guessing you already tried restarting the laptop? Here is some stuff I found that might help: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-pictures/speakers-cutting-out/e76a3e46-ac84-4987-800d-6f7b05a971c3

if not then maybe it is a hardware problem, sound card or speakers (probably speakers then because your headphones work fine)...

If the headphones work fine, I would be more inclined to think it is a speaker problem and not a hardware problem.  Maybe try hooking up a mini set of speakers to the headphone jack and the line out and see what you get.

Typo.  I probably rephrased it halfway through typing it and didn't correct it.

Before posting, I hadn't tried re-installing the drivers...but I have now, and it didn't help.

I guess I may have to look at an external set.  But that sux...   :censored

Depending on your laptop and/or your skill level, you may be able to replace the laptop speakers, or maybe have them replaced.

This has been going on for awhile...but I only just now noticed for the first time that they only cut out when I move the laptop...and I have further just discovered that they come back on when you tap them.

Guess they are just loose.   I've never opened up a laptop in my life.  Is it super hard?   Are the connections easy to fix?  Will I have to solder them?

I honestly have no idea, sorry. You can try googling 'replace <laptop model> speakers' or something.
