Different Set Ideas
« on: March 23, 2014, 09:31:15 PM »
*NOTE: If you're still waiting to see the current setlist live without spoilers, this thread is not for you*

Just for fun, I was wondering which songs people would add/remove from the current setup. Would you keep the Awake/SFAM segments so long? No ADToE at all? All of DT12? WDADU Anniversary spot? etc.

I've had this set in my library for a while that I think would be a great set for this tour. It covers 9 albums and is the same length as the current set:

Set 1
False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
The Glass Prison
--JLB says hi--
Just Let Me Breathe
Only A Matter Of Time
The Looking Glass
Enigma Machine
The Mirror/
Lie
--JLB mentions Awake's anniversary and introduces Space Dye Vest--
Space Dye Vest
In the Name of God
-------------------------
Set 2
Overture 1928/
Strange Deja Vu
--JLB mentions SFAM's anniversary and introduces TDoE--
The Dance of Eternity/
Bridges in the Sky (End of TDoE would slide right into where JP kicks in with the opening riff)
Behind the Veil
On the Backs of Angels/
Surrender to Reason (End of OtBoA would go right into it like they did with WIMH on the ADToE tour)
Illumination Theory
----------------------
Encore:
Take the Time w/ extended jam
Easter Egg

Also, they'd have to drop the "Along For the Ride" tour name since I left the song out.

Also worth noting I love the current set. This thread's just for fun.

If Enigma Machine and The Looking Glass is replaced for two of the three other tracks not played yet from the self-titled, that would be great.  I would like it as well if The Enemy Inside and Along For the Ride was replaced but that's not happening in this tour.

That's a very cool set. Not sure TGP quite fits in that position though.

Really looking forward to some changes for the second Euro leg. TGP instead of TSF would be pretty awesome.

I wouldn't hold my breath for the first two either since TLG is a single with a music video and EM is an instrumental with that cool cartoon clip to boot, not to mention it encompasses the drum solo. The only song I'm really missing from DT12 is Behind The Veil.
TGP instead of TSF would be pretty awesome.
Indeed, and we'd be one step closer to the perfect setlist. Another giant leap would be the inclusion of TTT (complete with the "Unbroken spirits" section, I'm positive James could slay it nowadays) while dropping the entire Awake chunk along with OTBOA in favor of ACOS, 8VM, LTL and BTL.

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

"WDWADU Anniversary spot"

i would be the happiest man in the universe...maybe one of the early unreleased songs (maybe Two Far or VITAL STAR!)

About awake and SFAM thay can choose one of these 2 options:

1) they play the rest of the songs that haven't been played in this part of the tour
2) thet won't play any of the songs of these records

My ideal tour thing would be (other than changing the setlist every night) having two setlists rotating:

Setlist A
First set

-False Awakening Suite-
The Enemy Inside
The Shattered Fortress
-James says "HOWREWEDOING *insert city here*??-
Surrender To Reason
The Looking Glass
Trial Of Tears
Enigma Machine (with drum solo)
Along For The Ride
Breaking All Illusions

Set 2:
Behind The Veil
---
Panic Attack
The Bigger Picture
Scarred
Disappear
Illumination Theory

encore:
The Dance Of Eternity
One Last Time
The Spirit Carries On
Finally Free

Setlist B

Set 1:
-False Awakening Suite-
The Enemy Inside
Prophets Of War
---
Surrender To Reason
The Looking Glass
Trial Of Tears
Enigma Machine (with drum solo)
Along For The Ride
In The Name Of God

Set B:
Behind The Veil
---
Under A Glass Moon
The Bigger Picture
Blind Faith
Space Dye Vest
Illumination Theory

encore:
Overture 1928
Strange Deja Vu
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
Finally Free
Because Mike is better than Mike

I listened to it like that and thought about it and I think it could work. The only real way to do this song is either have it open a set, or be the second song of the concert. It's like having ToT where it is in the real setlist: It's weird placement, it shouldn't work, but it does.
"WDWADU Anniversary spot"

The Looking Glass

Enigma Machine (with drum solo by Mike Mangini)
behind the veil
Raise the knife
Act II

1. False Awakening Suite
2. The Enemy Inside (this HAS to open the show)
3. Only A Matter of Time or Status Seeker
4. The Glass Prison
5. The Looking Glass
6. Trail of Tears
7. Enigma Machine
8. Surrender to Reason
9. Breaking All Illusions

-Encore-
10. Mirror
11. Lie
12. Lifting Shadows off a Dream
13. Scarred
14. Space Dye Vest
15. A Change of Seasons

-Encore-
16. Overture 1928
17. Strange Deja Vu
18. Through My Words
19. Fatal Tragedy
20. Pull Me Under

This is THE setlist. Im probably a bit over my time limit, and there really isn't much down time for Labrie, but this would have been perfect for me. The most controversial would be the absence of Illumination Theory, but meh, I still haven't gotten into that song.

I could do without The Shattered Fortress, Lifting Shadows, Scarred, and On the Backs of Angels.  Substitute those with The Glass Prison and the remaining DT12 songs and I'd be a very happy camper.

3. Only a Matter of Time
4. Lost Not Forgotten
5. The Looking Glass
6. Trial of Tears
7. Enigma Machine (w/ drum solo)
8. Through Her Eyes (w/ extended guitar solo)
9. The Bigger Picture
---intermission---
10. The Glass Prison
11. Surrender to Reason
---
12. Honor Thy Father
13. Erotomania/
14. Behind the Veil
15. Misunderstood
16. Along for the Ride
17. Illumination Theory

I would love them to take out Scarred thus making the Awake set shorter, and remove On The Backs Of Angels. This would accommodate Metropolis and The Spirit Carries On, songs I think they should play every show for the rest of their career.

I would expect them to remove the Awake Suite altogether, though I wouldn't be shocked if they added Erotomania/Voices, and even Innocence faded for the second leg. Perhaps they may swap out some Scenes material too.

As much as I like TSCO and Metropolis, I'm not in favor of them being played at every show. A strength of DT shows are that they are not reliant on standards being played all the time.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

This is my take. I currently am in the university cafeteria, so I didn't really sum up the imdividual lenghts. I strugglet to fit in LTL, my favourite, but at the end ACOS makes more sense as the closer. Give me some feedback on this one, I'm afraid my setlist making skill may have grown rusty over the past few years! :p

Wasteland, I am in agreement with you on the fact that if the 2nd time around is also an Evening With, Bridges will open the 2nd set.
And I've also envisioned ITNOG closing the 1st set as well.

I don't see them keeping Mirror/Lie though.

I can see The Looking Glass staying, especially if they are successful promoting it. I'd be shocked if Trial Of Tears stays, hopefully swapped out for Lines In The Sand.

Remember, comparing the 1st and 2nd, say, US runs on the ADTOE tour, there were only three holdovers..Bridges, OTBOA, and BAI.

I would rather hear more from DT12 such as The Bigger Picture, and Behind The Veil to replace two of the songs from Awake era. And bring in more from ADTOE and Octavarium..

I think if they keep only one song from Awake, it'll be SDVest, just because this is the only tour they've played it on and they're making a big deal about it.

I think if the second legs of Europe/US are Evening With...'s, BitS will take the place of the longer ADToE song, but OtBoA will stay for this entire tour, and then probably pop up in at least one leg for the rest of their career I'm willing to bet. Like how PMU/Metropolis/TSCO are essentially staples.

TLG was supposed to be the lead single and they're promoting the hell out of it, so that'll 100% stay, in my opinion.

The only songs I think are 100% for this entire tour cycle are FAS/TEI, TLG, IT, OtBoA and maybe SDVest. Everything else is fair game for replacement.

I can see TSF being replaced by either TGP or TDS (but come on. It's gotta be TGP THIS time.), BAI with either ITNoG or LTL, ToT for 2 more DT12 songs or another longer song, The Awake suite save SDVest for some songs off of the albums they're neglecting this Evening With cycle plus whatever other DT12 songs aren't added, and the SFAM suite swapped for a different song, maybe Home, and put in the second set, leaving the encore open for maybe ACoS, because I doubt 8VM very much.

Ill give a shot for a second leg set (just through this together and didnt think about time, but looks like a good set to me):

FAS
The Enemy Inside
A Rite of Passage
Lost Not Forgotten
The Bigger Picture
Lines in the Sand
Take the Time
In The Name of God

The Glass Prison
Behind the Veil
Anna Lee
Afterlife
Surrender to Reason
Wait For Sleep
Learning to Live

This is a REALLY good set! I put it in a playlist and it's only 2h30m, so it's actuallya bit short. I went ahead and added more songs and made some minor changes. I figured they wouldn't stop playing The Looking Glass and Illumination Theory so I added those. I also wanted to add Hell's Kitchen to Lines in the Sand. Something had to go, so I had to take away In the Name of God, Take the Time and Anna Lee, as much as I would love to see them live. I figured with HK/LITS, that was enough from Falling into Infinity, and because IT was already taking up a closing spot after adding it, WFS/LTL had no good place and I preferred those over ITNOG. I did add Vacant/Stream of Consciousness to make sure Train of Thought was still in there, and have a break for James in the second set. I also restructured the set to fit with my added choices and have a good flow.

Set 1:

False Awakening Suite (intro tape)
1. The Enemy Inside
2. A Rite of Passage
3. The Looking Glass
4. Lost Not Forgotten
5. Hell's Kitchen/
6. Keyboard Solo/
7. Lines in the Sand
8. The Bigger Picture
9. Wait for Sleep
10. Learning to Live

~1h17m

--- intermission ---

Set 2:

11. The Glass Prison
12. Afterlife
13. Surrender to Reason
14. Behind the Veil
15. Vacant/
16. Stream of Consciousness
17. Illumination Theory

~1h08m

Encore:
18. Illumination Theory Outro/Easter Egg/Ending Credits jam
19. A Change of Seasons

~27m

Total: ~2h53m (+intermission = ~3h08m)

The total time takes into account spaces between songs (1 minute of space per set) , the keyboard solo (3-5m), a JLB talking spot in each set (1m each), the Easter Egg jam (which is ~3m plus 1m for the jam) as well as the extended outro to Learning to Live (1-2m).

If they play that set on the second leg, I'll be sick  :lol I much prefer it to the current set as it features my favourite DT song, 2 of my top 4 and 4 of my top 9 tracks (and I already saw 2 of the remaining 5 on the first leg).

Seems like a very taxing set for JLB though.

Bigger Picture needs to be added second leg.  Would also like to see another ADTOE tune thrown in there (Bridges?) and something from ToT.  And while it wont happen, wouldnt mind seeing the awake portion dropped in favor of more Scenes material.

I like ^, but if I were to go as changing the set  that little I'd do something like this:

False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
The Glass Prison
On The Backs Of Angels
The Looking Glass
Trial Of Tears
Enigma Machine w/ Drum Solo
The Bigger Picture
Bridges in the Sky

Behind The Veil
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Scarred
Space-Dye Vest
Surrender To Reason
Illumination Theory

Overture 1928
Strange Déjà Vu
The Dance Of Eternity
Finally Free

I only keep TLG in the set because there's no way in hell they're axing that song at any show on this tour.

I would think if they wanted to trade out one or 2 of the DT12 songs for the other 3, my guess would be AFTR and/or Enigma Machine. I can't see them dropping FAS/TEI, TLG or IT. But AFTR does seem like it'll be a staple for the tour. Hell the entire set is looking like it'll be the permanent set for the entire duration of the tour at this point.
