A recurring lyric haunting my dreams
« on: March 18, 2014, 07:44:56 PM »
I'm sure this has been pointed out before, but has anyone ever noticed that the word "dream" occurs lyrically at least once in every studio album DT has ever released? I wonder if that was intentional?

FII - 2
SFAM - 5
SDOIT - 4

Very interesting find! I think it's not TOO much of a coincidence, but neat otherwise!

I remember once before someone ran all of DT's lyrics into a sort of tag cloud to see the most commonly used words. I believe the usage of the word "dream" was in fact the reason that was done. I can't remember what other words popped up, so hopefully someone else still has that, or is willing to do an updated version that includes the newer albums since then.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Great catch! The most surprising for me was that Train of Thought almost doesn't make it. I'd love to see that tag cloud, by the way.

Similar to Ronnie James Dio and his fixation with Rainbows

On a related note, every Dream Theater studio album title up until Octavarium actually had a dream/reality/mind-related theme to it:

When Dream and Day Unite
Images and words
Awake
Falling Into Infinity
Scenes From a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Train of Thought

Add that to the fact that FII was originally named Stream of Conciousness, JP always had a fixation with mind issues :lol.

Really? I didn't know that :lol That makes sense though, I always thought it was peculiar when LaBie sang "in a stream of consciousness" in Lines In The Sand.

I don't know whether Dream Theater is too obvious to add to the list or too much of a stretch because it's named after the band. :lol

I think Nightwish has the word wish in every single one of their songs.

It actually only took me one try to find a counterexample: Storytime.

However, they definitely do have more than their share of recurring lyrics. Many of the songs on the album Once have the word "once," and most of Imaginaerum has "awe." And, of course, there's the terms that Tuomas personally likes to use a lot, like "Dead Boy" or "Ocean Soul."
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time

How many times do "I" "me" or "my" appear? I bet it's a lot. Selfish assholes....
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

It sometimes feels like "grace" shows up quite a bit in DT's lyrics.

But I would bet that the word "the" and "and" pop up a lot more often, not entirely sure though.

It would be really cool if someone made a video in this style https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrrnySxbuE8 for "Dream Theater likes Dreams". Though they evidently don't like dreams quite as much as Dio likes the night or Metallica likes death...

So the actual reason why SC isn't a good album is that they were so full of themselves when making it :neverusethis:

But seriously, I find it funny that most of the albums with the most occurrences of "dream" are my favorites :D

There's at least one (maybe two) video like that; it was "Dream Theater in 15 seconds" or something like that. There was also a "DT likes doors" video with various lines including "door".

Right, so how many time does the word "you" get mentioned? I'm pretty pretty sure DT said themselves that it's all about you and not me.

They changed it because the rest of the guys and I think the record guys thought it was too pretentious. Like "Falling Into Infinity" isn't :lol. He got his revenge with the instrumental, although I was never sure if it was because of that or the lyrical theme of Vacant(falling into a coma, or unconscious).

What about the word "theater"?
