Spock's beard, Transatlantic, Neal Morse - ranking thread
« on: February 27, 2014, 01:22:31 PM »
The title says it all, which means I'm too lazy to explain how this works. I guess it's self-explanatory. The only thing I need to clear is the following: we're taking the whole Spock's beard discography into consideration, not only the stuff that Neal was on.

I think this could be interesting, especially if it hasn't been done before.  ;D

I'm going with Spock's beard > Neal Morse > Transatlantic option.

Transatlantic > Spock's Beard > Neal Morse should be the only option needed.

Indeed. I know some people here love Neal's post-SB output, but he too quickly fell into the trap of turning the crank IMHO. His musically most interesting output happened during the SB and early TA time.

Spock's Beard > Transatlantic > Neal Morse

Transatlantic's newest album did nothing for me, and I'm not really a huge fan of their other albums anymore, though I'd probably still enjoy them if I played them. As for Morse solo, I used to like several of his albums, but I got burned out on them quickly. Too repetitive and prog by the numbers for me.

However, despite not being much of a Neal Morse fan anymore, I still like a lot of the early Spock's Beard albums. In addition, X and BNADS were two of the band's best, so SB is easily my favorite.

This precisely.

I think it's hard to choose, seeing as the three artists/groups have released such a different amount of albums. Spock's Beard have a lot of great music, but also a lot of mediocre stuff. There really are no bad Neal Morse or Transatlantic albums, but while Transatlantic have consistantly better releases across the board, Neal's high points (One and Testimony 2) are out of this world. I went Neal/Transatlantic/Spock's.

I went with:

Transatlantic > Neal Morse > Spock's Beard

The three best albums by any of those three are the first three TA albums, IMO, so while they don't have nearly as many albums, they get still the nod.

I went with Neal over Spock's because a) I listen to his solo stuff more than I do SB, b) Neal's two best albums are, IMO, better than Spock's best album, and c) Neal's least best solo albums (Lifeline and It's Not Too Late) are better than Spock's least best albums (s/t and Octane).
