I don't think that's fair to say he hasn't been up to his snuff in each of his last four postseason starts.  3 runs in 7 innings against Boston in Game 5 isn't bad by any means.  I don't expect an ace to allow 1 run per start in the playoffs to be up to snuff, especially since they are going against tougher competition.  And besides, if we extend this to his last 7 postseason starts, he was lights out in his first three last October.  And he was great in two of this three starts in the 2012 playoffs. Waino has allowed only 0 or 1 run in five of his 11 career postseason starts.  That is pretty damn good, if you ask me.  His postseason career ERA is still just over 3, which is great by just about any measure.

As for the 2nd inning, Carpenter's play was the only error technically, but holiday could have caught that bloop hit that loaded the bases, but he decided to slow down and pull up short instead of laying out for the big catch.  And on that bloop hit to short left that was just fair, even though it was not catchable, the way Carpenter missed it and then had it get past him just looked Bad News Bears-ish. :lol

I get what you're saying about Wainright Kev.....he is a top tier pitcher. But the fact remains his team is losing his starts.....other than that ridiculous comeback on LA....he's lost 3 of his last 4 playoff starts when he's paid big $$ to win those. Last night sucked....only giving up 3 runs isn't that bad but he wasn't near as sharp as an ace should be for a game 1 like that. For me there are no excuses for him not to have command of his pitches in a playoff game because of who he is and what is expected of him.

The Cards defense was bad....hard to believe Carpenter booted that easy grounder. The play you're talking about with Holiday wasn't as clear cut. We were in center field and that was a play that he didn't commit to making right off the bat which made it near impossible to get to and he took the conservative approach. But that didn't lose the game for them nor did that dink hit that no one could get to.

You gotta hit and they aren't. Hopefully it was just a dominating performance by Baumgartner issue and not the dissapearing offense issue they had all season.

Just watched the replay again of that Balk. That was a pretty obvious and blatant balk and the fact that it wasn't called is ridiculous. It theoretically still only makes it a 3-1 game but it COULD have changed the remainder of that inning....it at least makes it a 2 run game.....

Pretty hard to deny that Kansas City doesn't have that team of destiny vibe going for them. Harder to expect this series to get back to Baltimore.

Don't worry, Jeremy Guthrie is pitching game 3, it's getting back to Baltimore.

Even if we get game 3, we'd have to win either game 4 or 5 to get it back to Baltimore.

I've always been against the 2-3-2 format, especially when it was used in the NBA finals. At no point in a series should the lower ranked team play one more home game than the higher one.

Rosethal and Martinez would swap roles if I were a manager. Rosenthal has no moxi or confidence and is of no use without either. Martinez does....and he's nasty. I'm done with Matheny's loyalty in this case. Rosenthal is not scary to anyone anymore.

I think in our time it is completely stupid to use the 2-3-2 (I'm always a fan of 2-2-1-1-1). I guess I can see how it would've been better in the 80's and before especially if you had to go from the East to the West coast, but there's no use for it now.

I hate 2-2-1-1-1. It makes a series that should last maybe just over a week last two weeks or more.

Two weeks or more? Sorry but that's an exaggeration.

A 2-3-2 that goes seven with travel off days = 9 Days
A 2-2-1-1-1 that goes seven with travel off days = 11 Days

Matheny deserves to be blamed directly for that loss specifically for keeping that old, suck a$$ man Randy Choate on the team in lieu of Sam Freeman....a younger...better left handed relief pitcher who DOESN"T have walk issues or issues simply throwing a ball to first base. It's utterly ridiculous to lose a game in that fashion....just about as ridiculous as keeping an over aged....no good....left handed soft toss pitcher on your roster. That 'L' is well deserved and should keep Matheny up tonight with the thoughts of how his loyalty to players who aren't performing continues to cost him victories.

It is too bad. Also amazing to have seen them get this far without him, Machado and Davis. We've had all three on the field at the same time for exactly 0 games this year.

This is what I want to happen.  I like their style of play, and like the Pirates it had been a long time since they had tasted success.
