I Finally Get the Lyrics for The Count of Tuscany
« on: February 03, 2014, 11:47:12 PM »
From JP's Facebook:

So great to see 'The Count of Tuscany' once again in Florence.

The Count of Tuscany is a 19 minute long in-joke.  JP had whatever experience he had meeting the guy, and basically turned it into a crazy ghost story.  You know who probably laughed the hardest at the "sucking on his pipe" line?  The actual Count.  'Bro, he even got your hookah habit into the song.  This thing is great!'

Everything makes sense now.  In spite of the music, the lyrics aren't meant to be taken all that seriously.

The lyrics are still awful.

Regardless, I still dig the song and that album quite a bit.

I thought we already knew the lyrics weren't meant to be taken seriously?

I don't like the lyrics to "The Count of Tuscany", but I sure prefer them to middle-aged didacticism of "The Illumination Theory".

That's what JP thought while writing the lyrics, right? :neverusethis:

You might be also interested to know that Mike Portnoy is no longer a member of the band.

That'd be fucked up if Portnoy really left.  DT would be done for.

+1 like thumbs up and 100% agreed. I was very disappointed by the lyrics in that song as well.

The lyrics are didactic and the message is medieval.

So that's why I liked it so much! It's about middle ages!!!

Middle-aged meaning, a middle-aged guy dishing you out life lessons; not a middle-ages guy dishing you out life lessons. Though the latter would be hilarious.

I just don't really care for the lyrics. I dig the message, but as with Neil Peart (another guy who's lyrics frustrate me), I kinda feel like I'm being told how to live, rather than being shown something more expressive and less preachy. Also, I feel like they just don't suit the song that well.

Not sure which direction you want to go here.

If not someone middle aged, would you prefer life lessons coming from someone like Justin Bieber or someone even older with one foot in the grave?

Another thing:  you can insult me, my woman, my family, and even my dog---but watch out when it comes to Mr. Neil Peart.   This will be your only warning.

 ;)
Hope is what remains to be seen. Now we must tend our garden.

Humanism, Liberalism, Empiricism, Science just to name a few things I'd rather take advice from than from some medieval scholastic priest - or a lot of other things. Remember, the most intelligent people of that time knew less than our 6-year olds...

I've studied Middle Ages History at the university for years, and I can tell you that no Middle Ages priest would tell someone "until you struggle through the dark you'll never know that you're alive", he would rather say "live your life in penitence and praying for the Lord to forgive your sins, you'll be at peace in Heaven after you're dead." It's quite different in my book.

I'd say that's a very dubious statement of fact. I'd say there is probably something in the idea that the general populace were not as well educated as primary school children are today. But the most intelligent people from any period would likely be the most intelligent in any period. Amassed knowledge is of itself not an indication of intelligence.

The lyrics to TCOT are still daft though.
