I liked the " Ellen " One. I wonder what her reaction was to that :p

I assume that girl knew that Ellen knew that Ellen played Dory - probably. Would have been a cool extra coincidence if not :P

There is a thing called the critical Mach number, which is when an airplane is flying below the speed of sound, but there are certain points along its surface where the airflow meets or exceeds Mach 1.  These points are what you see in those condensation cones.  You can also see a small shock wave just above the canopy of the forward plane.

Taken myself in St. Peter's Cathedral. Always liked the lighting in that picture.

People in Falkirk, Scotland must really like horses.  That's cool; horses are cool.  So they made these really big horse sculptures.

How big are they?  Well, here they are under construction:

Lenticular clouds

We were in Colorado over the weekend, and on the way from Colorado Springs up to Denver, I got to see a lenticular cloud with my own eyes.  It was surreal.  I was driving, and my wife took a couple of pictures, but none turned out very well because we were in a car on the freeway.  But it looked kinda like this:

"Where stable moist air flows over a mountain or a range of mountains, a series of large-scale standing waves may form on the downwind side. If the temperature at the crest of the wave drops to the dew point, moisture in the air may condense to form lenticular clouds."

Google "lenticular clouds" for more.

iPhone and snap away frantically and this is what I got :

I'm always amazed how good my iPhone 4S camera is.

At least when compared to the very first camera phones which were just pitiful.

The scale in the last picture seems really off from the other two.

I intentionally chose pictures with seemingly different scales to them.  The first one is the most deceiving.  Those sculptures are way in the background, but don't look like it.  In the middle picture, you have to realize that those mobile cranes are really huge.  The third picture is the one that actually makes them look on a similar scale to most images I could find.  The horse heads are really, really big.

The first pic is deceptive because it's using a wide lens to fit it all in frame, so it makes the horses look smaller. The deceptive thing about the second pic is that those trucks are way bigger than you first realize. The third pic is using a long lens, so they look more true to size there compared to the cars.

The Hovenring (or “Ring of the Hovens”)
« Reply #60 on: March 13, 2014, 03:14:57 PM »
You're a major, progressive, car-hating European nation, with all the bike lanes you can muster. But while converting a roundabout to a standard four-way intersection, the roads suddenly get in the way of the bike lanes! What do you do?

If you're the Netherlands, you construct a highly-engineered, very beautiful and innovative RING that sits above the intersection, allowing bikers to enter and leave from any direction.

Unfortunately after they built it, they found that it was affected by tremendous vibrations, so they had to close it for six months and add dampers.

What they wound up with is very beautiful and functional. And a lot better than tunnels, which would have been cheap and invisible and not an attraction at all.

So what are the soldiers laying on - and couldn't the people just walk up that ?

I'd say they could lay like the soldiers and roll.

But that's cool nonetheless.

These are awesome.

"artist and photographer Michael Paul Smith has spent hours upon hours photographing one special town that he holds very dear to his heart. There is something that always drew him to it, and the images he created are simple, but stunning. They glow with small-town charm and innocence, reminiscent of days and decades past."

I saw those a little while back, and they are indeed awesome. It's amazing how good the photos look compared to how simple they look when you see the overall setup. A great use of forced perspective, lighting, and attention to detail that shows that scale model work can still hold up.
