Is there one band that defies your music catalog?
« on: January 27, 2014, 03:34:12 PM »
Well for me it is 311.

I'm not into reggae but there is something about the their hard rocking sound,  harmonies and and melodies that I love.  I was coming home and was cranking their album, Uplifter and I was singing and pounding my steering wheel driving home.

What band is it for you?

Probably Dream Theater. Shocker.

EDIT:  I thought it said "band that defines your music catalog."

Definitely Gorillaz. They're catalog is so diverse and quirky and odd that it defines me and my tastes so very well. From the immensely depressive to awkwardly upbeat and cheery.

I still have the cassette single to Us3's Cantaloop. I loved that song.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

No.

If I like it, it's in my music catalog.

Yeah, I always liked it.

I also love Blondie! Turned a few heads when I listed Eat To the Beat as an Honorable Mention to The TAC Top 50.

With Blonde, I just have my 2 disk greatest hits.  That's good enough for me.

Jaq, I don't believe that for one minute.  I know you'v got a "I'm getting it on" song that a girl you liked and you knew it would work.  I know your stories. :lol

Dream Theater, probably.

I love prog, and I love metal. But 99 percent of prog metal bands get my gag reflex going pretty quickly.

I have a shitload of music that the hardcore 17 year old Maiden/Megadeth/Metallica fan would've been embarrassed about, but since deciding that I don't really give a shit about what anyone else thinks, none of it really embarrasses me.  I kinda take pride in having an eclectic music collection.  Music is music, it either speaks to you in some way or it doesn't.  I get embarrassed for people who have a blinkered view of music, what a sad way to live.

I have a lot of cheesy, kitsch-y records that I just keep for lols, tho.

Not a band, but I'm growing a decent amount of liking to Justin Timberlake which is a different act from all of the modern hard rock bands that I listen to on a daily basis.

I never needed that kind of song.

Mostly because in all my stories, I was truly getting lucky. Ya'll never heard about my failures  :lol

I can't speak for king, but I think the point of the thread isn't "guilty pleasures", but rather groups that are outside the norm for you.

I have no norm.

There are some things I listen to less than other stuff, but I have no general norm.

Nowadays, when people ask me what type of music I listen to, IDK what to say. I don't want to say cheesy stuff like "Oh, I can listen to anything" because I don't want to be associated with others who make such replies but don't actually have very varied tastes (IMO). I tend to list my main listening interests over the last few years though instead of saying that I like everything.

I listen to prog, metal, and some classic rock... and Blink182. Don't ask me why, cause I really don't know. But I love virtually every song in their catalog.

Have you heard Angels And Airwaves? They're Tom DeLonge's other band, and are (in my opinion) far better than Blink 182. You might like 'em.

The first thing that comes to mind is that I have the complete discography of The Offspring.  Sure there are one off CDs in my collection that are kinda out of place (Anberlin, Crossfade) but The Offspring have 9 albums, and in a collection dominated by prog and metal, punk stands out.
In high school my buddies and I built a Van Der Graaf generator.  You know, to get girls.

I've always liked their serious songs but never bought any.  I think seeing them live and how bad Dexter's voice was turned me off.

There isn't a band but there is a song.

This is the only thing that comes to mind...
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

My tastes are all over the place so it's hard to pick one that sticks out the most.  I have Zappa, Glenn Miller, Bobby Darin, Paganini, Jewel, My Dying Bride, you get the idea.  So....yeah..

In a sea of rock, metal, prog, jazz, folk, etc., Ellie Goulding's two albums definitely are the oddballs in my collection at the current time. But I really do love "Lights", so hey.

Either Dream Theater or Michael Jackson would be the most anomalous artists in my collection (maybe DT more so because I listen to a lot more of them, and because I probably dislike their respective genre overall more).
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Not really, if I like something I usually find at least two or three more bands in that vein.
