Tbh.  if you're talking GENRE then Progressive is your DT, Rush et al.  But you can talk about music being 'Progressive' in the actual, websters dictionary definition of the word.  'Progressive' therefore becomes an ironic name for Prog Rock/Metal as most of the bands tend to not progress at all.  olol.  And irony is for hipsters.  Therefore you're all a bunch of hipsters.

Fair enough. Progressive as a musical genre and progressive as a generic adjective are indeed two different things. I was trying to state that progressive rock as a genre and prog as a genre are one in the same.

This is 100% my opinion, but I think of progressive rock and prog rock to be exactly the same, but a band that is progressive and a band that writes prog music are two different things.

Dynamics and vibes. Building up soundscapes and drifting between different intensities and vibes, which usually increase the lengths of songs dramatically, make alot of songs especially "proggy" in my mind. More so than odd-meter crazy solo sections.

Also, songs that change and evolve as they go along are progressive. A prog band doesnt necessarily need to evolve and "progress" as long as the songs they compose do, right?

You cannot define prog perfectly.  There are far too many factors to consider and far too many sub-genres to give it an accurate definition.

That's true. I'd say that prog is an umbrella term for any music that tries to bring a bit more of classical computational thought and a break away from the genre common song forms. That's general enough to fit all the bands that maybe be progressive or use progressive elements.

In general I'd say that's how genres work. They can't be too specific, at least with the one word terms. If you want to get specific, that's where you combine a bunch of words, prefixes, and suffixes: like progressive countrycorestep or something.

But a better way to say what I was getting at: there isn't a 1 to 1 relationship between a song and genre. I use genres as descriptors more so than was to classify. Sure, they are useful to classify music into playlists, time periods, and musical movements, but when describing a band or song to someone, genres are definitely more of just adjectives to convey the sound rather than saying they are a part of a distinct group.
