DT's keyboard/piano breaks
« on: January 23, 2014, 09:06:29 AM »
Hi,
Although i'm a drummer, i'm a big fan of those "keyboard breaks" in DT's songs. By "keyboard breaks" i  mean those parts in a song when all the band goes off and only the keyboard keep playing some amazing riff and then the band gets back in.
I made a little investigation and went through all DT's discography looking for them and i found these 12.

Personally i love both TDEN and Blind Faith keyboard breaks.
So i decided to put all the ones i found so you guys can, as DT's fans, tell me which one is your favorite.

Great thread, thanks for picking them all out! :tup I gave them a quick listen and most of them are so amazing, I'd be hard-pressed to narrow it down to just one. The favorites:

Metropolis pt 1. - Simple, yet with so much character, it was my text ringtone for years.
LTL - Love it, along with the bass break, this is the best ending to a DT song and album.
TDOE - What a moment! Since the auditions I always see/hear Mangini counting it out (3...4...5...aaaarrrggghh!) when I listen to it.
Blind Faith - One of the most beautiful DT moments.
ES - I was blown away the first time I heard it, I remember thinking "these guys can do anything". The fast patch changes are fun as hell.
TDEN - It's a huge contrast to the rest of the instrumental section, gives it an eerie mode.
BAI - Another huge favorite, has a very strong classic prog vibe with great piano/organ tone.
IT - One of the early hooks of DT12, I still remember how fascinated I was with this when I first heard it (Mangini is great as well, so technically not a solo break). Reminds me a lot of classic prog once again, more specifically, Keith Emerson, my second biggest childhood hero.

Yeah, sorry, but I'm not gonna vote. :)

I was going to vote Blind Faith, but then I remember Learning to Live's break rules them all.

LTL or ES I think. All very cool moments though. What about OtBoA ~5.52? I've always loved that too  :coolio

I don't like LtL break, so Blind Faith was an easy vote.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I'm the boat who just can't/wont vote. The ones in Blind Faith, Learning to Live, and Breaking All Illusions are always duking it out in my mind.

I went for Blind Faith but that was actually because of the organ solo after the piano break, which is amazing. However, I absolutely love the organ bits in Breaking all Illusions so seeing it unappreciated here makes me wanna change my vote :D

DT's piano breaks give me just so much joy  :D

I'm going with the little ragtime break in The Dance of Eternity, because I smile every time, and it was one of the first bits of a DT song that I fell in love with.
