What's your ideal Dream Theater concert?
« on: January 16, 2014, 11:46:45 PM »
If you could choose the setlist for a Dream Theater concert, what would it be? The only rule is that it should be less than 3 hours of music.
Mine is as follows:

1. A Nightmare to Remember
2. Blind Faith
3. Lines in the Sand
4. Ytse Jam
5. Surrender to Reason
6. Far from Heaven
7. Breaking All Illusions
__________________________________________

8. In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 1
9. Scarred
10. Vacant
11. Stream of Consciousness
12. Take the Time
13. The Spirit Carries On
14. In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 2
__________________________________________

15. Octavarium

(I went with the "one thing from each album" approach)
D - D/F# - G - D - Bm - Bm/A - E/G# - A

Hmm.. While these aren't necessarily all of my favorite songs (some of my favorites have already had decent live coverage), they are among songs that are my favorites, plus songs that I'd particularly like to see live aswell as song's that I feel DT haven't played in a while (and should), but also in a format that would flow well for DT (imo at least) to make my ideal setlist that reflects what I appreciate in Dream Theater at this moment in time:

Opening:
1. Behind the Veil
2. Panic Attack
3. Lines in the Sand (Rotate with Trial of Tears)
4. Breaking All Illusions (Rotate with In The Name of God)
5. The Count of Tuscany

Second Set:
6. New Millennium (Rotate with A Rite of Passage)
7. Constant Motion (Rotate with Honor Thy Father)
8. The Killing Hand
9. Blind Faith
10. Wither (Rotate with Along for the Ride)
11. The Answer Lies Within
12. The Ministry of Lost Souls
13. Surrender to Reason (Rotate with The Bigger Picture)

Encore:
14. A Mind Beside Itself (Rotate with Illumination Theory)
15. *insert Images and Words song here*

That'll make a 2 and half Hour show and most rotated songs are of similar length.  :D

First of all, the band would either be in its 1991-1994 or its 1999-2010 layout.
The lights & stage would probably be laid out and programmed in a manner similar to PN09/2010 or the 2011 Europe summer shows. Complex light shows, yet with a theatrical touch of subtlety. And none of that garish spotlight backlight crap, either.
And no click tracks!

False Awakening Suite (Intro Track)
A Nightmare to Remember
Ytse Jam (w/drum solo)
Home (Opening chord is Ytse' Jam's Last chord)
(Welcome)
The Looking Glass
Breaking All Illusions
The Bigger Picture/
Through My Words/
Fatal Tragedy
Piano Solo/
Sacrificed Sons

Hell's Kitchen (Intermission House Music)/

Lines in the Sand
Goodnight Kiss/
Solitary Shell (Extended)
Voices
Eve w/ Samples
Space-Dye Vest
Wait for Sleep/
Learning to Live
-----
The Count of Tuscany
A Change of Seasons

3 hours, 6 minutes, plus intro/intermission.
I must have calculated wrong.
"I raised the baby, I changed the baby's diapers.  Whenever the baby had projectile diarrhea, I was there in the line of fire.  I even got a little in my mouth!  I sacrificed so much for my baby.  Now my baby hates me and thinks Mike Mangini is its real father!"

FAS
Misunderstood
Behind the Veil
Trial of Tears
The Bigger Picture
You Not Me
Home
Sacrificed Sons

Overture (SDOIT)
A Fortune in Lies
As I Am
Wait for Sleep
One Last Time
In The Name of God
The Ministry of Lost Souls
ITPOE 1&2
Breaking all Illusions

Finally Free
Illumination Theory
Metropolis Pt.1
Octavarium

Something like that.  The orders all messed up and I don't have time at the moment to add up the run times.  Sorry OP!

Mostly I'd just like to hear You Not Me, Misunderstood, One Last Time, Finally Free and Behind the Veil.  As long as those are there I can't really complain!  There is so little available as far as live performances of YNM and Misunderstood it should be a crime.  Everyone might not like them, but they deserve more play than essentially none.  :sadpanda:

This time I went with one track from each album. Due to having to be under 3 hours these are not all my favorite songs from each album. By the way I think ToT would be a cool way to start a show.

Trial Of Tears
Beyond This Life
Learning To Live
The Count of Tuscany
In The Presence Of Enemies Pt.1
In The Name Of God

Behind The Veil
Lie
The Killing Hand
The Glass Prison
Breaking All Illusions
Octavarium

A Change Of Seasons

My list can be slimmed down by replacing TCoT with TLF + Extended jam at some point in the second set.
"I raised the baby, I changed the baby's diapers.  Whenever the baby had projectile diarrhea, I was there in the line of fire.  I even got a little in my mouth!  I sacrificed so much for my baby.  Now my baby hates me and thinks Mike Mangini is its real father!"

I won't have an hour limit, as this is just fantasizing ^^
The current intro with the video is awesome, so I'll keep it:
-FAS
-TEI
All of us would love some heavy things going after that intro, this means I'd pick:
-The Dark Eternal Night/Welcomes, greeting of the band and the fans
-Scarred
Then something lighter and an instrumental to keep James going:
-Hollow Years(with a magnificent solo like at Budokan)
-The Enigma of Eternity (Even though JP hates medleys so much, I made this up in my mind, don't kill me! :D )
Another kickass song or 2 to get the crowd jumping, just before the 20 min intermission:
-Beyond This Life
-Misunderstood

Intermission with Hell's Kitchen and YouTube mixes etc

2nd set will be something heavier and longer, starting with an epic:
-TCOT
After the first epic of the concert, shall we move on to some crowd singing?
-The Silent Man
-Forsaken
James should be very comfortable by now, so we shall get some tough songs!
-LtL
-The Ministry of Lost Souls
-TSF/TGP
And a long instrumental to rest our old pirate:
-SoC
I just couldn't do without adding this beauty before moving on to the set closer:
-Outcry
And the 2nd set's closer ITself:
-IT ;D

10 mins piss break for both the fans and the band, then the grand encore!

Encore:
-Under A Glass Moon
-TBP
-I Walk Beside You
And finally, the concert finisher which will make the band fade away:
-The Spirit Carries On

Hope you all like it!

Rotations? I haven't thought about them much. Maybe at a later date ^^

Ill give it a stab:

The show would at a place like Beacon Theater in NYC (which has become my favorite venue) or similar (a nice Opera house style with great sound and great views) although id gladly take a sold out football stadium but ill be realistic...

It would have to have a great stage show sort of like this tour, but ill go further and add pyro technics.... to every song.... well more realistically pyros to the bigger parts of the best songs is fine.  This show would also have guest appearances with former DT members (I wont go crazy with guests from other bands)

Set 1:

In The Presence of Enemies Pt 1
The Glass Prison
Blind Faith
The Mirror
Lie
Lines in the Sand (with DS)
Wait for Sleep (with KM)
Learning to Live

Set 2:

A Nightmare to Remember (with MP)
Lost Not Forgotten
Hollowed Years
Home
Solitary Shell
Afterlife (with CD)
In The Name of God

Encore:

A Change of Season (somehow with all previous members)

Didnt clock that so not sure if its over 3 hours or under for me to squeeze a song in, but i think id die if i saw this.

Partially taking into account what I've already seen-

Light Fuse and Get Away
Surrender To Reason
-
This Dying Soul
Take the Time
Beyond this Life (with jam session. Mangini would be a great addition to this)
Just Let Me Breathe
Blind Faith
In The Presence of Enemies

--intermission--

The Glass Prison
Build Me Up Break Me Down
-
A Change of Seasons
-
Caught in a Web
Small piano solo/ Anna Lee
Outcry
The Killing Hand (complete with G5s. James can totally do it again now. Also, it's not f*cking Christmas  :lol)
Octavarium

I don't really like encores, so no encore. Over 3 hours, but under 3.5 hours.

That is unbelievably perfect

Something like that. Clocks in at 3:19, so it'd be something like 3:45 in real life. SHUT UP I CAN DREAM OKAY

1.   The Enemy Inside
2.   Blind Faith
3.   This Is the Life
4.   Peruvian Skies
5.   Voices
6.   Behind the Veil
7.   Surrounded
8.   Fatal Tragedy
9.   Speak to Me
10. Scarred
11. Disappear
12. Take the Time
13. Breaking All Illusion

--- intermission ---

14. Trial of Tears
15. Eve (with samples)
16. The Spirit Carries On
17. Space-Dye Vest
18. Hell's Kitchen
19. Lines in the Sand
20. In the Name of God

--- encore ---

21. The Root of All Evil
22. A Change of Seasons

I'm testing it out right now, and I think that it would flow really sweetly. The transition from Trial of Tears to Eve is a really good one, and I can totally see TROAE as the first song of the encore... imagine the lights down, you can't see anything, then that drum intro comes in, and when the main riff enters, BAM! lights go on. How sweet would that be?

EDIT: Whelp, just saw the 3 hours rule. I guess I'd cut... Scarred, The Spirit Carries On and... This Is the Life, I guess? I dunno. That would bring it below 3 hours.

My ideal DT concert? Easy, one where I've got front-row centre tickets. Preferably in a smaller venue, ideally close to where I live.
said it before - I'd love to see the band play an acoustic, unplugged style show. Yes, I know, I always get shouted down by people telling me that's not what DT are about, but that's precisely why I think they could rock it.

Setlist wise - a good combination of favourites and songs I've not seen before:

The Glass Prison
Under a Glass Moon
Peruvian Skies
The Killing Hand
Burning My Soul '96
Home
Through Her Eyes
~~~~~
Erotomania
Voices
The Silent Man
Misunderstood
The Bigger Picture
The Count of Tuscany
~~~~~
The Spirit Carries On
Learning to Live
"And if love remains, though everything is lost,
We will pay the price, but we will not count the cost..."

2. Bridges in the Sky (slide into the opening riff off the last note of TGP)
3. Blind Faith
4. Caught in a Web
5. Lie
6. Under a Glass Moon

8. The Dance of Eternity
9. The Count of Tuscany

With an intermission, this would clock in at 3 1/2 hours, which is plenty doable imo. It's only a half hour longer than the shows they're playing now. It'd be one hell of a show too.

I know I just did this yesterday (7/26), But I Wanted to amend a few things. I meant to include more from "Awake," but I forgot. Also I wanted to put something together that is more reflective of the current tour, sort of "Along for the Ride: The 2nd leg." I will include as much varied material as I can, which may or may not be to everyone's liking. So Here goes:

SET ONE:
1) Surrender to Reason
2) Overture 1928, which would segue straight into...
3)...Just Let Me Breathe
4) Keyboard (piano) solo/About to Crash
5) The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
6) One Last Time
7) Constant Motion

The following would be an all-acoustic set played on REAL acoustic instruments-Mr. Petrucci would play acoustic guitar or guitars, Mr. Rudess would play a real (probably small) piano, Mr. Myung would play either acoustic bass guitar or back-up to Petrucci, and Mr. Mangini would play either a small acoustic drum kit or percussive instruments such as conga, bongo, tambourine, triangle, etc.

8) Medley: Space-Dye Vest/The Spirit Carries On/Carpe Diem & Another World (from A.C.O.S.)
9) Another Day
10) Hollow Years
11) Solitary Shell
12) Medley: The Bigger Picture/Only a Matter of Time/The answer Lies Within/Forsaken/This Is the Life
13) Along for the Ride (I think this song would sound beautiful "unplugged.")

There might have to be a break while moving between electric and ascoustic instruments and back again, but I think it would be worth it...

Anyway with apologies to Mr. Petrucci the 1st set would conclude with the 2nd of three medleys-

14) Awake Medley: Lie/Erotomania/Voices/Innocence Faded/Scarred/6:00

SET TWO:
1) The Count of Tuscany
2) Lost Not Forgotten
3) Learning to Live
4) About to Crash (Reprise)/Guitar Solo
5) As I Am/Drum Solo
6) Behind the Veil
7) Scenes from a Memory Medley: Strange Deja Vu/Fatal Tragedy/Home/The Dance of Eternity/Finally Free (with the extended jam/closing section from the L.S.F.N.Y. Version)

ENCORE:
1) To Live Forever
2) The Root of All Evil
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...

Something like this: (going with a 3 hour limit since that feels logical with DT)

1. Beyond This Life
2. 6:00
3. Caught in a Web
4. Metropolis Part I - The Miracle and the Sleeper
5. Breaking All Illusions
6. In the Name of God
-----
7. Fatal Tragedy
8. Lines in the Sand
9. Voices
10. Under a Glass Moon
11. Home
12. Disappear
------
13. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
-----Encore-----
14. A Change of Seasons

That was tough and I had to leave out many great ones tbh. I'm aware that it's a lot from the same albums. I could do one with something from each album as well. I need to think about it though.

If I could I'd give you my New York experience, although you'd be behind a disgusting 20-something Asian couple kissing and fighting the whole time. Still better than Tick's though.

Made another setlist that has something from all of their albums (just for fun). None of the songs from my original setlist are in this one either, so just for fun variety:

2. The Mirror
3. Lie
4. Blind Faith
5. Strange Deja Vu
6. Trial of Tears
7. Only a Matter of Time
-----------------------
8. A Nightmare to Remember
9. Beneath the Surface
10. Stream of Consciousness
11. The Great Debate
12. Scarred
13. The Spirit Carries On
------------------------
14. Illumination Theory
15. Finally Free
16. Learning to Live
------Encore--------
17. Octavarium

I'm gonna take a stab here. This would be like a 30th Anniversary show type dealy.

Set 1
False Awakening Suite (Intro Tape)
The Enemy Inside
The Bigger Picture
---JLB Hello---
Outcry
Wither
Repentance
Panic Attack
Stream of Consciousness

Set 2
The Great Debate
Through Her Eyes
Burning My Soul
Voices
Pull Me Under
Only a Matter of Time
---JLB Introduces Charie Dominici---
A Fortune in Lies (Charlie on Vocals)
Space-Dye Vest (w/ Kevin Moore on Keyboards, Charlie on Vocals)
Lines in the Sand (w/ Derek Sherinian on Keyboards, Charlie and James share Vocals)

---Encore 1---
The Best of Times (w/ Mike Portnoy on Drums, James and Mike share Vocals)

---Encore 2---
A Change of Seasons (w/ Charlie, Kev, Derek, and Mike)

2 hours 54 minutes 15 seconds of music time. would probably be about 3:15-3:30 with intermission, encore breaks, jamming, etc.

I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

Do you really want Charlie runing A Change of Seasons like that
"I raised the baby, I changed the baby's diapers.  Whenever the baby had projectile diarrhea, I was there in the line of fire.  I even got a little in my mouth!  I sacrificed so much for my baby.  Now my baby hates me and thinks Mike Mangini is its real father!"
