Also, why are people getting upset? No one wants Labrie replaced. He will never get replaced. No one can replace him. It's just fun to imagine.

I don't think they would lose their identity... I mean, When Dream and Day Unite sounds like Dream Theater without Labrie.

There's no alternative to James Labrie, he's identity of Dream Theater so there's no point in discussing it

The same thing has been said of many vocalists, including Steve Perry, Ozzy, David Lee Roth...and so on. Vocalists that
supposedly were irreplaceable. Well guess what...

Nobody wants it to happen but the future is 100% unpredictable. If for any reason JLB had to leave, it's fun to consider options.

Matt Smith from Theocracy. I think he could definitely do justice to the DT songs, and he's not well known enough to draw the label of "DT and the guy from _______". I would go with a totally different tone....one that is more diverse and less like it belongs to a narrow genre or particular era. A guy like Roy Khan would be fantastic.

For me the question is do you want a clean break from the old material like a Hagar/Roth situation where the old material is pretty much forgotten? I think they could do some great stuff with Khan, Allen etc.... but I don't think those guys could do the old material justice.

So it'd be a real balancing act in terms of not being a clone but being able to nail the old stuff.

I have no desire to see anyone replace JLB but in a hypothetical I think you'd need someone close-ish in tone and range.

First off, a lot of people are getting the thread wrong. It's a hypothetical scenario, it's not a "Replace James LaBrie with another singer right now" sort of thread (although the title makes it look like that

). The point is just to think who would you like to see in DT in case - God forbid - James left the band.

I can't really think of someone at the moment. Most of the other singers I like just have a whole different feel and texture to their voice and I'm not able to picture any of them in Dream Theater. It's not just a matter of hitting the right notes, but of feeling like the singer actually fits the music. Perhaps I'm too used to JLB's voice in DT songs, which is only natural after 11 albums and over 20 years in the band, but I just can't. It's similar to when DragonForce's (sorry if anyone hates the band in here) singer left: I couldn't imagine anyone replacing him. They got a much better (in my opinion) singer, and his voice is way different from the former singer's, but he actually fits the music just right.

I wouldn't say Marc is "way different" from ZP. I can tell them apart (I also prefer Marc), but they've got a similar tone and style.
