Damn, this update. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

I like how under your favorite songs for CTTE you just have that whole album :lol Definitely one of the greatest and most beautiful masterpieces ever created, and the same holds true for SFAM.

9. Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys 1 (1987)

This was probably my first oldschool metal album. It’s strange that I heard it before Iron Maiden, Metallica and other bigger bands, so it holds a special place in my heart. The thing is, when I put it on today, it still impresses me. I see this album and the power metal genre in general as a cross between the speed and agression of thrash metal bands and the melody of heavy metal bands. The combination results in a groundbreaking album recorded by very young guys, especially the singer, who was only 18 at the time. It’s also not a very lengthy piece of music, so the only thing you can do is press the replay button and enjoy.

Favorite songs: Halloween, A Tale that wasn’t right, Twilight of the gods

M, everything you say is spot on. A great album. I heard it after Maiden and Metallica and it still holds a secial pace for me. One of the most influential albums in meal IMO. and you mention how young they were when they made this. That is whats so incredible about it.

I still remember the day I bought it. I put the cassette on, and halfway through Im Alive, i pulled into a parking lot in a nearby park and sat in my car for the next 35 minutes absolutely speechless.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Close to the Edge is a masterpiece, and while I don't enjoy it as much as I used to, Scenes From A Memory is great and one of DT's best.

5. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the holy (1973)

Here’s a huge band that doesn’t have such a huge discography. However, I’ve always been fascinated by the amount of diversity these guys displayed on only eight albums. This album is the most impressive of the bunch when it comes to variety, since every single song is completely different stylistically. It’s unbelievable how such four amazing musicians managed to make everything click, whatever style of music they were dabbling into. There’s darkness, there’s cheerfulness, there’s just plain wackiness as well. It’s an album that fascinates me for its entertaining values, but the listener can still take it very seriously.

Favorite songs: The Crunge, No quarter, Dancing days

The Song Remains The Same might be one of their top 3 tracks, and I love Dancing Days, but the rest of the album fails to grab me.  After IV, LZ is hit and miss for me.  The hits are pretty awesome, but it's just a litttle too eclectic.

This... although, with a couple of really odd ball tracks (how D'yer Mak'er ever became a radio staple, I'll never know), this is a hit and miss album for me; 5 amazing tunes + 3 meh tunes.

Similar with me -  got a couple of their albums I'm yet to listen to but for the most part (aside from a few classics) I really don't bother with them.  But as I tend to do these days (working back in time looking for good stuff more so than recent releases) I still intend to give a good listen to those I haven't heard and also a couple of Plant's solo albums.

Houses is one of my favorite Zep albums, along with II and PG.

On their early albums, they twisted and transformed humble blues music into a big bombastic beast of a sound.  On Houses, they proceed to do the same with funk and reggae.  No wonder the music critics hated them, lol.

4. Pink Floyd – Animals (1977)

Although it might not be as conceptual, as touching or as personal album like their other famous releases, this album is still spectacular musically. The structure of the record is strikingly unique, having three epic pieces placed in between two similar, brief acoustic numbers. Lyrically, this is probably the angriest and the most satirical the band has ever been, which is neatly accompanied by the generally heavier sound. A lot of it has to do with the guitars taking a very dominant role on the album, and even though I consider Roger Waters to be the mastermind of the band, Gilmour truly made this one even more original.

Favorite songs: Sheep, Dogs, Pigs (three different ones)

Sorry, I'm going to be a downer once again, and not say what everyone else said.  But to start, yeah a lot of the music is great.  I find it not as melodic as Dark Side or Wish, and so I can't love this one like I do those.  Sheep is probably in the top 3 of my favorite PF tracks and is crazy good for turning the lights down and cranking, but Dogs and the Pigs are a little too plodding for me.

But I'm not arguing with your taste for Pink Floyd.  It's almost impossible to say something great about them that hasn't already been said.

The fact that I'm following your list though means I think overall it's great, don't get me wrong.  I can't wait to see what the top 3 are!

I appreciate the comments, nicmos, and I can definitely hear why Dogs and Pigs could be a bit plodding for some. It wouldn't be interesting if everyone absolutely loved all the albums that I love. But for the most part, I seem to be nailing it so far in the top 10.  ;D

3. Metallica - ...And justice for all (1988)

Fans would argue, and even the band members might agree on it, that the band went too far with their experimentation on this album. However, the level of ambitiousness really blows me away here. The band completely lets go off the rules and decides to push the boundaries as much as they can. It’s true that they mastered the art of making a short, traditionally structured metal anthem on their subsequent hit release, but this album shows the other side of their skillfulness. They’ve never been as outstanding in terms of musicianship, and the progressive nature of the record does it for me quite a bit.

Favorite songs: One, …and justice for all, Blackened
