I don't see why that would bother you. Bands that cite Metallica as in influence are almost invariably referring just to the first four albums.

I just don't like hearing all these bands and such mention Helloween as a main influence. Because i know they're only talking about the Keepers albums.

Why would that bother you? Those albums were made almost 30 years ago.  They helped define a whole genre of music. Current Helloween is excellent and live in no era's shadow, but the Keepers albums were groundbreaking.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

There's nothing you can do about that, and it's fact, that the Keeper albums influenced a generation of bands, none of the Deris album have done anywhere near that.  I'm more of a Deris era man myself, but there's no denying what the band did with those albums.

Oh I totally understand why the Keepers are legendary and such a big influence. It doesn't really bother me, not a lot ;p. I think it has to do with all the comments i see bagging on Deris and praising Kiske. I just assume when i hear Helloween named as an influence by someone or a band, i'm kind of assuming they're the people who also hate Deris. But I'm sure that's not totally true. What it really has to do with is my personal taste in music; I love all the Deris albums and I'm not a giant fan of the 2 Keepers. Therefor I think everyone else is wrong ;0

It also has to do with the fact that a lot of what Helloween has beeing doing on their last 4 or so albums isn't that different from the style they had on Keepers. Other then the vocals. My feelings are that Helloween have SURPASSED what they accomplished on the Keepers.

BTW my favorite song from the keepers-era is Rise And Fall. They need to play that live!!!!! with Andi !!!!!!!!!

I went to Sydney's specialist metal shop after work today and picked up Orden Ogan 'Easton Hope'
Had half a listen in the car and it's equal to the other OO album I own 'To The End'.
It's really everything I want and enjoy about modern power metal.
Lots of fast songs, tonnes melody great songs anthemic chorus, all wrapped up in very crisp production and mix.

Plus any band that does a cool song and funny video about pirates can't be too bad  :yarr

The shop isn't as big as they have had in the past at previous locations, but they still have a pretty decent selection.

Been listening to Edguy's Hellfire Club lately. Great stuff. In the past I'v compared Edguy and their newer stuff in particular to recent Helloween. More the idea of what they're doing, but in sound they're similar too.

But I heard Mandrake for the first time yesterday. My god does it ever remind me of classic Helloween. The music and melodies and guitar sounds and solo's - incredibly similar to Keepers Pt. 1 and 2. For some reason I'v seen people compare Edguy to Maiden, and have seen them be called the 'next' Iron Maiden. But now, they're the newer Helloween. At least, the Keepers-era helloween, the one's so many prefer ;p

Sammet has a rasp in his voice, yet there are times in some chorus's where he goes high and sounds very similar to Kiske. Overall, Mandrake just sounds incredibly like early Helloween, and sometimes like recent Helloween (songs like Salvation or The Saints).

Yet I think this Mandrake album is much better then the Keepers cds. Anyone else notice the similarity?

I swear, man, it's like you try to connect everything to Helloween. :lol

But yeah, most power metal is going to be pretty heavily influenced by Helloween. As far as the Maiden comparisons, Bruce Dickinson is Tobi's favorite singer and main influence.

I played the Keepers CDs this week and was quite underwhelmed (liked them much less than I remember- aside from the odd song ) - would much rather listen to Mandrake or current day Helloween.

I tried listening to one of the Keepers albums a while ago, and I just didn't care for it. It's kind of odd, I pretty much love the whole genre of power metal except for its (arguable) progenitors. :lol

Indeed :lol

Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica) has said he never was a Helloween fan, but SA isn't (wasn't) the most typical power metal band anyway.

I have a Dragonforce album on my iPod I'v yet to listen to. I have never listened to Dragonforce before. I remember a lot of kids back in highschool (i live in north america and this was like 5 years ago) talking about Dragonforce. Not Stratovarius or Hammerfall, just Dragonforce. They seem to have broken through to the US in a pretty big way, have they not(for a PM band)?

And Shadow Ninja, i just couldn't help but notice this. I was just listening to Mandrake like 3 hours ago and it sounds REMARKABLY like old Helloween. It's like they weren't taking influence from their quote-unquote style, but rather their "sound". Like they wanted to sound like Keeper of the 7 Keys Part 3, by Helloween. And i'm not joking, i mean this.

DragonForce is pretty big. They're the "pop" version of power metal. I love 'em, though.

Personally, I can't say I ever heard too much Helloween in Edguy, other than the obvious PM trademarks. Though, part of that is probably because I don't care for Helloween enough to listen to them for an extended period of time. :lol

edit: Yeah, they're not known for being great live, though people sometimes exaggerate how bad they are. Plus, I think it's been better with their new singer. I don't really care about live music, though, so as long as their studio stuff is good, I'm a happy camper. syl

Any of them, honestly. They're all cut from the same mold. You might just want to go with Carolus Rex, their newest one, as I imagine they'll be playing a lot from it.

I wouldn't know - haven't heard it - but it's been said that the Swedish version of Carolus Rex flows much better.  Anyone vouch for that?

I love Edguy's Lavatory Love Machine. As with most music of this type, the lyrics can be very hard to understand. But I just watched a video with the lyrics, and they're fuckin amazing.

Let's put it like this, DF are not known for doing their songs justice live and who can blame them, their songs are very hard to play live. But when you also add the fact that the guitarists do alot of shenanigans on stage while playing the end results is not that great. Seriously you need to watch that again, a hint: Watch and listen to the guitarists...

Again I love DF and their studio albums. Inhuman Rampage is a landmark within the Power Metal scene, I remember very vividly the first time I saw the Through the Fire and Flames video on TV and I couldn't believe the pure energy and speed their music had, I never heard anything like that before and that was around 2006 I think. Because of the speed of the music and the intricate guitar parts they have their music is very hard to play live, that's just how it is. Sadly it has become a gag on the web. They also got alot of fame because the song Through the Fire and Flames became a hit on Guitar Hero and when something gets ridicously popular like that song did, it usually tends to get out of hand very quickly. I know people that never listen to anything metal but they do know that one song by Dragonforce because of that stupid game.  :lol

Luckily the cd comes with a handy booklet with all the lyrics written in it. I find them very handy.

Bloody digital downloads  >:( Old man rant over.

And I love LLM. From a very good Edguy album.

The way the newer Edguy albums sound is not as power-metal. They're power-metal-is, but more just 'classic metal'.
