Any DT songs written about a family member (other than father)?
« on: December 17, 2013, 10:10:49 AM »
Are any DT songs written about a wife, child, sibling, or other relative other than a father?  If so which ones?   I believe I read on the forums that JLBs “Vacant” was written about his daughter, but wasn’t sure if there were others.

Nothing against the songs written about fathers (as a father of six, I’d like to end up with that kind of impact).

Yeah, Vacant was the only other one that came to mind.  And I think the lyrics there are more "inspired by" events with James' daughter, as opposed to being "about" her.  But, yeah, that's the only one that comes to mind.

Tho it's not specifically about her, ACoS was certainly inspired by MP's mother's death. You could say that the song is semi-biographical.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I didn't mention that because, for some reason, I assumed the topic was "other than parents."  Upon looking more carefully, yeah, it specifies "fathers."  So...yup.  ACOS definitely qualifies.

Yes, good catch.  I forgot about that one.  Although, again, I think it is more "inspired by" than "about."

Let's see... The subject says DT song... About "a family member".... It doesn't say it has to be about one of the BAND'S family members... So...

Thanks for the replies.  I'm such a sucker for the songs inspired by/about one's own children, but it seems like DT has steered mostly clear of this so far.

I feel like getting THAT personal doesn't really work for rock bands. I mean, if it's an artist like Ozzy Osbourne, where the band is named after HIM, and he always wrote his own lyrics (at least on those personal songs, as far as I know), that's different. But in a band where most of the lyrics are written by someone other than the main vocalist, I think it'd be a little unsuitable. Honestly, one of the things I find the most jarring about TBOT is that it's so specifically about MP and his life, being spoken in first person by JLB, I think is really weird.

I can see that.  I also think of bands like Redemption or even a Kamelot track or two that seem to have their origins in experiences/trepidation that come with parenthood/kids, etc.

Well, there are sometimes issues that people have in life, things they experience, where the best possible therapy they can experience is to express it and develop it into a song. At least that's certainly the case for me. So yeah, every once in a while, I can understand why JLB or JP or MP would say, "Listen guys, I'm kinda going through some stuff and I'm very passionate about these lyrics that I wrote, I think they should be on the album". But I definitely prefer when it's a bit less specific and easier to generally relate to, as with ACOS, Another Day, TAMP or Vacant.

Here's all the ones I know of:

A Change Of Seasons - Not *entirely* about MP's mother, but it was inspired by her passing.
Endless Sacrifice - About JP's wife, and how they hate being apart while he tours with the band.
Honor Thy Father - About MP's step-father. Not his father, so kind of fits in here.
Vacant - About when JLB's daughter suddenly went into a coma for a short period of time and he was terrified that she wouldn't wake up.

Here's the ones involving fathers:

Another Day - About JP's father's struggle with cancer.
Take Away My Pain - Another one about JP's father's cancer, this one being written after he died, whereas Another Day was during his struggle.
The Best of Times - A tribute to MP's father.
