Goodbye, farewell! (for now)
« on: December 11, 2013, 06:39:42 PM »
Hey DTF,

It's been a ride. I've probably been here about 5 years, and I've gotten to know and love all the personalities here. It's been a blast getting to know everyone and seeing everyone's life move forward in different, unique ways.

My life is moving forward as well, and unfortunately, that means I have to say goodbye to DTF and internet shenanigans in general. I'm starting grad school and in order to do well, I'm going to have to devote as much time to it as I can muster. No more slacking off! I've seen the syllabi for these classes and they're not pretty. There is just not enough time left to give to DTF.

I love all you guys, shoot me an email/PM from time to time, would love to hear from you. I'll be sure to check in sometime.

Thanks for the fun memories! - Ħ

PEACE OUT
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Well, I'm sad to see you go, but if you're gonna leave, wanting to do well in school is a pretty damn good reason to leave.  I wish you the very best of luck with all of your goals, buddy.

And we'll be sure to leave the door unlocked in case you decide to come back for a visit.
Sincerely,

I considered doing the same thing when I started Grad school, but knew I just didn't have the willpower to stay away.

Ħ, what are you studying in grad school?

Good luck on the next phase then!

However, since other people probably won't say it - I don't really get the point in "officially leaving" a forum like this. If you're really busy you will naturally spend less time browsing, posting, doing whatever it is a proper community member does here, but I don't really feel like there is ever much point in pre-emptively decide you're going to be so busy you are going to have to leave. If you've got any time where you're not doing work (and probably will, no matter how busy you think you'll be), there's no reason you can't spend a bit of that time checking on DTF or any other internet community / site you like. Or at least, no reason to officially rule that out as an option - if you end up spending your limited (and hence much more valuable!) free time doing better or more productive things then great! But I think (and based on what I've seen of other people claiming to leave forums / the internet) that's just something that happens naturally rather than something that happens when you suddenly decide to stop "cold turkey". I'm sure there are active members here who have commitments that keep them just as busy (not saying that you'll want / be able to do that, just that it's not automatically impossible because you've got a lot of work to do) but are very prominent members of the community here.

But that's just my own take on it, you will know better than anyone else what'll be most helpful for you. Good luck in your studies, and in case you actually do leave then it will be a shame not to have contributions from one of the more memorable posters.

Speaking from personal experience, if you decide you want to leave a forum and devote your time and attention to more important things, making it official can be a good way of showing yourself that you're committed to whatever the more important stuff if.

Of course, it can also backfire.  I once made a retirement post and the response I got was so touching that I ended up 'returning' the next day to thank everybody for their kind words, and then I just sort of went on posting.   :lol
Sincerely,
Jaffa

I give 3 weeks. A month tops.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Good luck H (I don't know how to make the funky little gate thing). I greatly admire what you are trying to do with your education! I've generally enjoyed reading your posts so if  you do find it necessary to stay away I'll miss your input. Now if it turns out that you can spare some time to engage here, please don't feel that your announcement in this thread commits you to silence in any way. I understand why you'd want to create this thread, but it can be a bit of a double-edged sword.

Best of luck.

It takes dedication and great strength of will to decide what needs to be cut in order to focus on what's important, and follow through on it.  I admire your stance.  Good luck!

And of course, come back when things have lightened up.
