80s Glam/Metal Vocal Showdown #29: Collins vs Bono
« on: November 21, 2013, 07:24:47 AM »
Ok, after scraping the bottom of the barrel with the last poll, let's move on to the last of the non-glam/metal vocalists.  But, how could I do an 80s poll without these two vocal icons?  Collins' era of Genesis gradually evolved away from prog, and into more pop.  U2... arguably the biggest act to come out of the 80s.  Iconic is really the best word to describe either of these.

My money is on Bono though.

I guess I'll go with Bono. He certainly had passion in his voice most of the time.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

One of these vocalists is responsible for "In The Air Tonight".  The other annoys the living hell outta me.

I've always been a fan of Collins as a singer, but I've never been much of a Bono fan. So this was a really easy one for me.

I love both singers but I find Bono a bit better.  Both are very flexible in styles of music.  This would be a final 8 if it were a round of 64.

I wouldn't go that far. Bono, maybe, but Collins?  No way.  Don't get me wrong, he was a good singer, but I can think of dozens that are/were better.  Bono's voice is too iconic to not vote for, and I think some let their hatred for him and/or U2 cloud the fact that he was a fabulous singer in his prime.  He has lost a lot of his power, especially live where he has to pick his spots instead of going all-out in every song, but if you listen to some of those live versions of Bad from the 80s...man.  Phil Collins never did anything as great as that, vocally.

I'm not sating my top 8 but I think Phil is so well known from the prog community to the pop community that he's be up there in popularity.

I don't get U2 at all; similar to the Beatles for me.

I found 70's Genesis to be too artsy and 80's Genesis to be too sappy.  However, Land of Confusion is great and "In the Air Tonight" from his solo is an 80s iconic song.  The world stops for the drums on that song. Phil gets my vote.

That is one of the most recognizable drum fills ever.  Easily.

I'm not sating my top 8 but I think Phil is so well known from the prog community to the pop community that he's be up there in popularity.

That is very possible.

I get a laugh out of the title of the thread every time I look at it.  Glam/Metal............. :metal........... :(

I'd rate Bono as the more talented vocalist but Collins sings more stuff I liked back in the day so I went for him.   His voice is just as iconic , if not as good technically.

Well, to be fair, I have disclosed that the 'theme' is more geared towards the era (80s), and that most of the vocalists are of the glam/metal variety.  This is one of the handful that don't fall into that bunch.  Only 3 more to go in this category.  You'll definitely appreciate my next category.

Bono is a better singer, but I prefer Collins voice.  Although I'm not a huge fan.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.
