DT the League 2014 - OCTAVARIUM IS THE BEST OF THEM!

DT the League 2013 - https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=34282.0

In  December, DT the League makes its return.

I used to do the Dream Theater Survivor. While survivors are fun, I got tired of constantly asking people to vote for their least favorite songs. I also thought that the album by album format was stale. For example, what would happen if Voices faced Lines in the Sand? What if Metropolis faced Octavarium?

The League's format is modeled from sports, mostly to college basketball. There will be 20 weeks in the regular season. Each week, a song will face another song head to head. You will then vote for which song you like better out of the two. The songs will accrue win/loss records. After 20 weeks, we will have Album Tournaments. After that, the top 64 songs in the league will be entered into a single elimination tournament to crown the 2014 League Champion.

Tiebreakers for Songs standings within their albums will be A. Head to Head B. Best Winning Percentage within Album C. Strengh of Victory D. Strength of Schedule E. Point Differential

Tiebreakers for 3 or more songs within an album will be A. Best Head to Head Record against all tied songs. B. Best Winning Percentage within Album, C. Strength of Victory D. Strength of Schedule E. Point Differential. Once this group is narrowed down to two songs, the tiebreakers for the two songs apply.

Tiebreakers for Songs for the end of season 64 Song Tournament will be A. Head to Head B. Album Champion C. Strength of Victory D. Strength of Schedule D. Point Differential

Tiebreakers for 3 or more songs for the end of season 64 Song Tournament will be A. Best Head to Head Record against all tied songs. B. Album Champion  C. Strength of Victory D. Strength of Schedule E. Point Differential. Once this group is narrowed down to two songs, the tiebreakers for the two songs apply.

It would take a long time for me to work out all of the tiebreakers, so I will use an online random number program to seed songs with the same winning percentage.

For the Albums and final tournament, I will not be voting. If a match ends in a tie, then I'll vote to break the tie.

Stay tuned to this thread for all League updates. Feel free to ask any questions or make suggestions on this thread.

This will be a lot of stuff to keep track of, so if you see that I've made an error in the standings or scores, feel free to point it out and correct me.

As with everything else on these forums. Please be respectful of everyone's opinions, and express your own opinions respectfully.

Last year, there were 100 songs in the league. That worked out rather well. Of course with the new album, this number will change. Does anybody think that any songs should be added to or removed from the league? Is this the year we put Raw Dog in the mix? Is this the year that some of the traditionally winless songs, like You Not Me get the boot? Should we be dragging another "unreleased" song into this? Review the list and let me know what you think. Once we get past that, I can generate the schedule.

I think removing songs that have continually received little attention would be a good idea, especially to make room for some newer songs any maybe add a couple of new surprises in.

Which version of Eve are you using?  The b-side or the live version with samples?

I just have it as "Eve". I suppose the voters can vote based on whichever version that they prefer. Personally, I don't consider live versions when voting, otherwise, Hollow Years would be getting more love from me on a weekly basis.

Excellent point DoC.

I'd rather see Where Are You Now as opposed to You Not Me.

Agreed.

Also I had another thought: How about You Or Me? It seems to get a lot more praise than You Not Me, and I know it's not exactly going to break the top 10 or 20 or even 50, but it might be interesting to see where exactly it would fit into the final list. Would it actually do okay, or would it only barely do better than You Not Me?

Though having said this I don't think any of the other demos need to be added, I just thought it might be interesting to add this one given how the majority feels about You Not Me and also how the majority seem to prefer You Or Me by a great margin. How much of a margin though? No fucking idea.

Yeah, You Or Me should be added, it's nice to see how many people prefer that over YNM.

I don't really care about the demos, as long as Raise The Knife and Speak To Me are included :lol

I don't think any album tracks should be removed, including You Not Me.

So we should keep Regression too then, right?   :P    I'm in favor of removing certain tracks like Regression because they would never garnish enough votes to go anywhere, which is the same logic I used with You Not Me.   I'd rather see Where Are You Now in there because it's a much better song, IMHO, than YNM or YOR.

It would be interesting to see how it does up against actual songs.  I'm sure there are songs that people hate which would lead them to vote for it out of pure frustration.   :lol   It probably wouldn't get far though.

I don't see the point in removing "unpopular" songs from the league. If you do that, you might also announce the winners right now, because they're going to win anyway :dunno:

No one is implying anything that drastic.  It would be nice to throw a few different songs in there to see how they would fare.  If removing certain tracks like Regression would make room for others and make the tournament breakdown easier then I am all for that.  Ultimately, I'll enjoy it either way.

That time already? Wow! It honestly doesn't seem like that long ago since the 2013 season finished. It'll be interesting to see how the songs from DT12 fare when thrown into the mix. I'm up for the ride again!*

*I may also be along for it, but to avoid cheesy DT song related puns, I'll stay up for it.

The season will begin on Thursday, December 12th with a kickoff match. The rest of Week 1 will begin on Monday, December 16th. Also, the regular season will be 25 weeks instead of 20. It will be followed by the album tournaments, and then the 2014 DT Tournament.

Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy are just considered Fatal Tragedy for the purposes of this tournament apparently? I sure as hell hope so 'cause that's how the album originally should've been anywho

Don't know why that would be apparent. I didn't include Through My Words because it's so short. I've never included Regression before either. But if voters lump Through My Words with Fatal Tragedy when voting for the latter, that's nothing that I can control or discourage.

Why does it feel like this just ended a couple of months ago?  Given the effort to go through with it, is it truly meaningful to do it every year?  Or would every album cycle suffice?

We are in a new album cycle now. It just so happens that the last League was done a year after ADTOE. Assuming they don't bring a new album out in 2014, there probably won't be a 2015 DT League.

Back in the day, we would do DT the League from January - July and the DT Survivor from July - January. It absolutely isn't meaningful to do it every year. But it is fun to do so. And at the end of the day, it's really just entertainment. The fact that only 3-5 songs have a legitimate chance at winning each year makes it less meaningful, but the way that I look at it, the league is here to have fun with. This is also why I've always preferred the tournament to have 64 songs instead of 32. 64 is unnecessary, but it's epic as hell.

Just my thoughts.

Oh, it's totally fine if you're up for it - I just know how much work/time these things can be.  And with a new crop of DTF noobs, maybe they'll stop by Polls/Survivors for it.

Well, as I missed previous DT league by only coming to this site few months ago, I'm glad this thing is being runned every year so I don't have to wait and can participate this time. I'm sure some of new people here have the same attitude.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I just hope that the majority of the newer people know that the Polls and Survivors forum even exists.
