I have a little trouble believing a setlist could SUFFER from Illumination Theory AND Octavarium being played in the same night... And that goes for 6doit too.. Sounds like the greatest DT show ever to me.

ONE show, and it was a special occasion. And the setlist suffered terribly because of that!

Good point about the special occasion, but I think whether or not the setlist suffered as result is up to opinion. :P

Dear Santa (JR is OK too, because he's another bearded gentleman),

On Along for the Ride world tour I'd like to hear the following songs:

A Fortune in Lies
Only a Matter of Time
Take the Time
Learning to Live
Innocence Faded
Voices
Scarred
Caught in Alice's New Nine-Inch Millenium Tool Garden
Lines in the Sand
Trial of Tears
Finally Free
Misunderstood
Vacant/Stream of Consciousness
Never Enough
In the Presence of Enemies
On the Backs of Angels
Outcry
Some Rush cover
And all of the new album. Not that I like all of it, but nearly every studio album song has been played live, which I admire.

Yours faithfully,
Ruba

Now, with all the new songs, here's how I imagine it:

Set 1:

False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
Voices
Behind the Veil
Surrender to Reason
Metropolis (slows down to the end of set 1 from here)
The Bigger Picture
The Silent Man
Vacant

Set 2: (Vacant ends set one and SOC is the first song in set two.)

Stream of Consciousness
Enigma Machine (two instrumentals gives James an extended break)
Learning to Live (before the entirety of THIS song)
The Looking Glass
Under a Glass Moon
Misunderstood
Breaking All Illusions
Along for the Ride
Hell's Kitchen
The Dance of Eternity
One Last Time
The Spirit Carries On
Octavarium

Encore:

Illumination Theory (imagine all the screaming as the introduction of this song happens)

I still think it's entirely feasible they'll play the whole album in the first set.  They did the same thing on the SFAM tour (which is 10 minutes longer as an album by the way) and no one's complaining about that.  Play the new album as set 1, delve into the band's history for set 2, do a fan favorite for the encore.  Sounds like an awesome show to me.

I want to hear 8V in the 2nd set or as the encore, but sadly I think that might be wishful thinking on my part.

As for Illumination Theory:  touring with an orchestra seems really difficult and expensive, so I'm not sure the band is itching to do that.  Touring with a smaller string section might be feasible, but the orchestra parts would have to be rearranged significantly to make it work.  It seems like that part of the song will probably have to be played as a sample (though I'd love to be proven wrong).

No, the setlist suffered from the format of how it was constructed, not because of having both of those epics.  That is what SAVED the setlist.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Definitely this. But still, it is just a pale hope I'm nurturing deep in my heart  :(

You mean the chronological order of the songs? Yes, that was a factor too, but I still stand by my point. As much as I like both IT and 8V I don't think the overall show would benefit of both being played, especially if they were to be played back to back.

I would love to see Octavarium and Illumination Theory. Am I pretending too much? :(

I really think so... that's one hour off the setlist in just two songs...
I don't think so. I don't no reason why it not should be possible. One could close first set and the another song could either close the second or be encore. That would be my dream scenario :)

I'm more attracted by the long stream of 8-12 minuters, looks like! Let's see what I can do:

False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
Take The Time
Hollow Years / Guitar-Piano Duet
The Great Debate
Behind The Veil
This Is The Life
To Live Forever
Finally Free
----
Enigma Machine (***)
The Looking Glass
Afterlife
The Mirror / Reprise
The Bigger Picture
Through Her Eyes / Solo
Along For The Ride
Surrender To Reason
Breaking All Illusions
---
Illumination Theory
Easter Egg (Outro Tape)

(***) - Intro played on tape witht the lights still down, they turn on when the full band kicks in.

Is the JM/MM solo > Scarred and idea you came up yourself? I recall wishing for it to happen about some time in one of these threads!

I did just think of it myself, but now I remember you mentioning it. I don't know if my idea was the exact same as yours though. Mine is that MM starts with the ride cymbal from the beginning of Scarred, but when JM enters he extends it into a bass solo, later returning to the original riff and JP enters with the rest of the song.

No, mine was actually the opposite! A spacey drums + bass improvisation like the Moon Bubbles of old culminating in the Scarred ride and the rest of the song.

I don't remember if I posted this last time, but I wouldn't complain if the improvisation started with the Solar Groove: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87UVbOIYT_k . I would actually die in joy.

I'm not a great fan of the first choice, for both reasons of opportunity (if a fan didn't dig DTDT you can't ask him or her to sit through the first hour of the show waiting for the songs he likes to show up) and for the presence of TGP (horribili visu!) and In The Name Of God (cool song but for an encore I would rather have many many other songs.

The second is much more balanced and I like it, but don't you think they may have overdone TMW/FT a bit in the last tour for it to come back so early?

I like this idea. A lot.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Oh. I didn't think that was for this long time :eek
I've seen them several times outside Italy though, especially in 2009 and 2010. I've probably heard it during those gigs.

Funnily enough I actually prefer my first setlist in terms of non-DT12 songs. I see what you mean about TMW/FT, but seeing as it's the 15th anniversary of SFAM next year, they might make sure they have something representing it. I thought about TDOE, but it might be a bit much alongside Enigma Machine on a regular basis.

Plus, the new version of the song with the LALP jam is still unheard of in the rest of the world, and the song wasn't performed extesively in Europe during the last tour.

Seen these premises, I say closing the show with Metropolis for the Euro leg of the AFTR tour would be a good move.

What about Finally Free? It hasn't been in rotation since 2004 and it's as SFAM as you will ever get!

As long as they rotate Metropolis so countries like the UK, where it was played at two out of the three summer dates in 2011, don't hear it again.

Finally Free would be a good choice, but I couldn't find a spot for it in the set without removing better songs (or IT, which is pretty much guaranteed).

I'll just repost these posts from earlier in the thread with regard to SFAM.

After asking JP tonight, I'd put money on there being a few special shows next year at which they play SFAM.

Well they hadn't thought about the anniversary, but seemed very open to, even enthused by, the idea of playing the album - 'it was the most obvious thing to do'. JP said he'd love to see what MM could do with it.
