The best section on Awake
« on: November 12, 2013, 12:53:26 PM »
2:28 - 4:16 of Scarred.

I never bared my emotion
My passion always strong
I never lost my devotion
But somewhere fate went wrong

Can't let them rape me again
Your venom's not family here
Won't let them fill me with
Fatalistic remedies

What if the rest of the world
Was hopelessly blinded by fear?
Where would my sanctity live?
Suddenly nobody cares

It's never enough, you're wasting your time
Isn't there something I could say?
You don't understand, you're closing me out
How can we live our lives this way?

You tell me I'm wrong, I'm risking my life
Still, I have nothing in return
I show you my hands, you don't see the scars
Maybe you'll leave me here to burn

All I have to say is  :metal.

The soft section of Scarred is the runner-up.

Overall, Awake is one of the least excellent albums IMO, but parts like this are terrific.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

Yea that part is freakin incredible, but I could not choose just one from Awake.

It is tough, given that it's such a fantastic album.  Hard to believe that, as good as it is, they've put out so many albums that surpass it.

But back to the question at hand:  Yeah, I'll go with the part in the OP.  There are some other parts that are up there as well, but if I had to pick a favorite, that one would probably be it.

Listening to Awake is such a great experience. It never bores me. And '6:00' is such a great opener. It's not immediately as dark as the record will get later on, as it's a pretty fun opener. It always gets me pumped up, and the drum intro is just too perfect for words. It's like a short demo: 'Just check out the amazing drum sound you'll get to hear on this record'. That bassdrum, oh my goodness.

JLB is a vocal god on this record. JP has the most delicious, fat 7-string sound for his riffs. He delivers two of my favorite solos ever (Voices and Scarred). Kevin Moore is all over the place with his atmospheric.. whatever the hell that guy did. His sounds are kinda cheap sounding at times, but he (or the producers) totally make(s) it work. The acoustic guitar layers and everything.. just silky sweet!

JMX has THE coolest bass sound and playing here, too. I really think that. Maybe 'FII' would like to have a word with me on that.. But I think I prefer this kind of 'liquid' sounding tone.

The songwriting, performance and production are really something to get lost in. And the mix/master is fairly dynamic to boot.

So many great moments, but I'm a sucker for the transition between 'Erotomania' and 'Voices'. Headphone material.

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Scarred is a great song,

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

The soft part of Scarred has to take this one.
The next one I would nominate is the second verse of Innocence Faded.  :hefdaddy

So many amazing moments on this album. I pick the soft part of Scarred, I LOVE that section. 2:28-4:16 of Scarred is also great.

The beginning of The Mirror is also a great section.

really? that's one of the things that turns me off. i don't think MP got a well-deserved, solid, professional, suitable drum sound until FII (though i quite like ACOS too).

'best Awake section' award, for me, goes to the climax of "The Mirror" — the use of the "Space-Dye Vest" theme after JLB sings "i'll never hurt you again." obviously there's a climactic moment in every song but that one is where the entire album hits the ceiling, imo.

My favorite part of Awake would have to be the soft build-up in Scarred.

Fuck it--best section of Awake is Scarred 0:00-10:59.

The outro to Innocence Faded is one of my favorite musical passages ever, but as a song, it doesn't have shit on Scarred.

All the good parts of Illumination Theory. Had a lot of potential as a great epic, only to be squandered by (in my opinion) poor composition. Which is rather atypical of DT anyways.

For me it's "I'll never hurt you again" and the SDV keyboard melody in The Mirror.. What an amazing transition.
But I have to say, that part of Scarred is great too.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Couldn't agree more in the OP. Scarred itself is beyond amazing in general, but this section is awesome in particular.  :metal

Too many awesome sections in Awake to narrow it down to one, but since a lot of the Scarred ones have been mentioned already, I want to give a shout-out to this awesome section from Voices:

I'm lying here in bed
Swear my skin is inside out
Just another Sunday morning

Seen my diary on the newsstand
Seems we've lost the truth to quicksand
It's a shame no one is praying
'Cause these voices in my head
keep saying...

'Love, just don't stare.'
'Reveal the Word when you're
supposed to'
Withdrawn and introverted
Infectiously perverted
'Being laughed at and confused
keeps us pleasantly amused
enough to stay.'

Off the top of my head, I'd go with either the outro of IF, or the Voices guitar solo.
Awake doesn't really have the epic standout moments of most of their other albums imo.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The second verse on Innocence Faded.
The calm middle section in Voices ("I'm kneeling on the floor...")
The outro in The Mirror
Bridge in Lifting Shadows Off a Dream ("He pours his soul...")
The outro in Scarred
The last verse in Space-Dye Vest ("There's no one to take my blame...")

Still my favorite DT album. The whole thing is amazing and I NEVER get tired of listening to it. So may killer sections but the
outro on The Mirror is the first thing that pops into my head.
