Gatherer [heavy alternative/prog/core] REST IN PEACE
« on: October 25, 2013, 11:16:49 AM »
A search on the forum here yields a few references to this band, but no dedicated topic.

I happen to love them. Both their debut album from 2012 "So Be It" and the music they did under the name "This City Sunrise." Which admittedly, was more hardcore punk influenced vocally, especially. But even under their previous name, the music they did was experimental and at least somewhat original sounding.

Anyway, So Be It is a terrfic debut record that for those who never heard any of it, I'd suggest tracks like "Regular Frontier" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JUM2s7Kn3Y ) and "Thrive" initially, to get an idea about their sound. Heavy guitars, intricate rhythms and vocal layers.

And/or the new single they just released "High Fives" which reminds me of the So Be It sound, but with a little electronic element.

It wouldn't be surprising to see a new LP from them next year, but this excellent new track will have to tide fans like myself over until then.

Heavy Hail drops on Friday, but it's already streaming.

Awesome record. Incredibly dense, in a good way.

just got around to listening to this last night, on my second round.

Yep, dense is how I would describe it.  I'm still on the fence as to whether I like it or not tbh.  I've loved these guys since I heard the first This City Sunrise demos back in '03; they're definitely 'progressive' in the purest sense of the word, but I've yet to decide whether the latest progression that this album represents is something that I dig.  There are echoes of 'So Be It' in a couple of tracks...

I'm hoping that my perception of the album will change once I see the songs played live.  A lot of So Be It was like that for me, songs like DDPXL and Building Houses really clicked once I saw them played live.  The other tracks I liked because they were just awesome songs, or they were live classics (albeit reworked in some cases).

Solid album, for sure.  Can't wait to see it live and see how/if it grows on me.

Super old megabump.

In seeing Bent Knee with Bubblemath last night, the other band on the bill was New Jersey-based Gatherers (formerly Gatherer as well, and they added the "s" on the end of their name per the identical name).

Gatherers from Jersey honestly didn't do a whole lot for me. Kind of typical Post-Hardcore. But it got me curious what Gatherer from New Zealand might be up to since it's been a few years since "Heavy Hail" came out in 2015.

In April they posted a new video for what is/was their final song "High Notes"

RIP Gatherer  :(

Hey team, we're gonna keep this brief.

We would love to introduce you to our latest and last song, 'High Notes'.

The last few years have been a whirlwind for us as we grew into actual adults and became really hungry for something fresh. With so many years of brotherhood, loyalty and history under our belt we dug as deep as we could to find a new way to do this thing, but as we reached the home stretch we ultimately discovered that our hearts just aren't beating to the same drum any more.

That's it, really. This is where we ended up. We're immensely proud of everything we've done, we lasted longer than most bands ever do and we have a friendship that is unlike any other. At the end of the day our mission was to be an incredible band that refused to follow trends and we can rightly say we smashed that goal out of the park.

We love all of you. To anyone that believed in us, helped us, sacrificed anything in any way for us - we'll never forget.

Onward and upward!

Gatherer
