7. In The Presence Of Enemies - Systematic Chaos
Now, lots of folks rank these separately, and that's all well and good, but as I only listen to them as one song, that's how I shall rank them. This song has some of LaBrie's vocals ever, from his his soft delivery of Heretic to the blazing metal of Slaughter Of The Damned. And come on, who doesn't sing along to, "FEAR! THERE IS NO EVIL TO FEAR NOW, FOR I KNOW YOU ARE WITH ME!". The way that section takes Psalms 23 in distorts it as if from Satan's perspective is, to me, very cool. I'm not sure if that was in the Priest novel or not, but it's great. Speaking of lyrics, I really like them here. The story they tell I find quite compelling. Now, some people don't like that this is something of a "typical" DT track. I can see where they're coming from, but I really like it, and to be honest, DT's never really done anything else quite like it.
Let's take a moment to talk about The Reckoning, the part most people dislike. Well, it's definitely the weakest part of the song. But considering how strong the song is, that's really not saying much. It's not one of DT's best Instrumental sections, but it's pretty good and has some really great sections. Anyways, I love this song.
