Music For Autumn
« on: September 22, 2023, 09:34:02 PM »
Well, it's officially autumn tomorrow.  I've done one of these threads the last two falls as well, but people seem to like Spotify playlists, so this time I've made a sampler of the stuff that gets me in the mood for it.  Make your own lists or just mention and discuss artists/albums/songs that have that vibe for you.

October Rust by Type O Negative

Yeah pretty much this.

Although Agalloch's Ashes Against the Grain is pretty close.

Obviously I'm not a huge Agalloch fan, but their music (and 90+% of black metal-ish stuff) felt much more wintry to me.

October Rust is definitely one of my favorites for this time of year.

I’m certain that I will spin that classic a week from Sunday.

Got you covered from the previous thread here too

Funny folks mention Agalloch. I've always more heavily associated their stuff with winter.

The Mantle is definitely a Winter album.

Opeth is autumn for me. I don't listen much to them nowadays, but that's one of the bands I instantly associate with autumn.

If you're diving into autumn, Opeth's "Blackwater Park" is an absolute must. The dark, moody vibe in that album just clicks with the fall season for me. Another one is Tool's "Lateralus" – it's ideal for those reflective autumn moments.

The Vision Bleak seems like a band that is meant for this season.

Yeah, Opeth is one of the quintessential bands for this for me.  Maybe less so Damnation, I associate that one with spring.

October is where I go full doom metal. Blood Ceremony, Avatarium, Lucifer, Year of the Goat, that old retro style (and dark moody lyrics) fit the season very well.

Also folk metal is kinda good for the occasion.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Though my playlist touches on doom metal in a few spots, I almost think of some of that as more fitting for a halloween playlist with some other stuff.  I'm contemplating doing a separate thread for that near the end of next month.  Some music works better for one or the other, and some I guess is in-between, stuff like Swallow the Sun, Novembers Doom, Doom: VS, October Tide and others.

Norah's music doesn't feel particularly seasonal to me, but it's great anyway.

My first thought was Dream Theater. It feels like they've had a ton of releases come out in the Fall, and I associate them with the weather cooling off.
A quick check on wiki confirms this..

I&W...even though this was released in July, I saw them on their first tour leg in October, and then again in December.
Awake....Released October 4, 1994
FII...released September 23, 1997
SFAM...released October 26, 1999
Train Of Thought...released November 11, 2003
ADTOE...September 13, 2011
DT12...Released September 23, 2013
AVFTTOTW...released October 22, 2021

Heck, even their live albums are predominantly released in the Fall...
Live At The Marquee...released September 1993
Once In A Livetime...released October 27, 1998
LSFNY....orig September 11, 2001
Live At Budokan...released October 5, 2004
Score...released August 29, 2006
Chaos In Motion...released September 30, 2008
Live At Luna Park...released November 5th, 2013
BTFW...released September 29, 2014
Distant memories...released Novemver 27, 2020
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I was thinking the same thing, but wondered if it was just my faulty memory.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions!

I too have a myriad of Fall-related memories attached to DT releases, the most prominent being the birth of our son (Halloween) a week after AVFTOTW. That record was on repeat in my earbuds during our whole stay at the hospital.

i will forever hold the first 8 sabbath records up as some of the most personally important music i've ever heard in my life. not only is sabbath still to this day the best metal band ever, they created so many interesting subgenres almost one after the other which each one of those releases. such a foundational band for me.

and yes, they are perfect for lead peepin' season!!

Yes!   I also listen to Sentenced and Amorphis more often, as I discovered each band in the fall, way back when.

Black metal tends to be my go-to around Halloween as well.
