I got the album at Christmas and it's been on regular rotation in my car since.

Maybe I'm getting old or something but I'm not feeling the magic as much. I still thinks it's a strong album though but it does kind of feel a bit formulaic.

I like IT as the stand out track. But, as nice as the string section is I don't understand why it's there other than - because they can put it there.

I don't think it's the worst but I prefer ADTOE.

Do not get me going on the production. It's suffocating. ADTOE had better production. I preferred the tone of the guitar and the drum sound. The constant "pshht" sound on the snare on DT12 is a bit distracting for me. All the toms (not the octo wotsits - the kit toms) seem to sound the same pitch.

Good - not great - not bad.

All of this.

Yeah, in some of the faster fills it's hard to tell the toms, the snare and the kick apart, they're all so similar in tone.

Oh, we're already talking about chopping the album up? OK. here's what I'd do.

1. The Illumination Theory - Just the Ambient / Tchaikovsky section
2. The Enemy Inside
3. The Looking Glass
4. The Enigma Machine
5. The Bigger Picture
6. Behind the Veil
7. Surrender to Reason
8. Along for the Ride
9. The Illumination Theory - Outro
Overall album run time - about 50 minutes

Sorry guys, but The Illumination Theory just doesn't feel right to me. I can either chop it up like this, or get rid of completely, but I can't accept it as is :P

The ambient, orchestral and easter-egg outro parts of Illumination Theory are the parts that ruin the song...

I love it, it's an amazing album with 2 new dream theater's classics : The bigger Picture and Illumination Theory.

Very disappointed, vocal effects everywhere, that alone puts me off it, too formulaic, just guitar fest and the drum sounds are awful... Never listen to it, must have listened to the album around 3 times.

4. The Enigma Machine
I'm starting to think people do this intentionally. :\

Whoa, That would be kinda cool!  IMO there's something wrong with IT  too :D I don't know what it is....
And still I would get rid of Thenigmachine :23

I haven't listened to the album in about a month, and coming back to it yesterday, I still stand by my opinion that it's a classic DT album. Top 5 worthy.

The fact that the track ends is what ruins the song.

How can the Easter egg ruin the song when it's not part of it?

well, technically it is part of it because it is on the same track.

Technically, the hidden banjo'ized version of Bonded By Blood is on the same track as Bedlam 1-2-3 on Exodus's album The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A, but obviously it's not a part of the song.

All of this and more, was removed from my cd player way to fast, hate the drum sound. Don't really like the shorter songs. Illumination theory starts with numerous rehashed riffs we have heard is some form or another before although over all I do like the song and I;m sure live it will be stunning. The looking Glass fans really seem to like, I just don't get it. Yes the bass break down is very nice, but the song goes nowhere and ends to abruptly IMO. I really like Surrender to Reason the best but it looks like they are not playing that one live at least yet.

Right now I think it's a bit same-old-same-old. And the production has no feel.

3. If you're confirmed about weaknesses of DT12 then why don't you make a perfect album.
4. All hater's should make a album which can amaze DT members and  they become your fan.
5. If you think DT lineup is not good why don't you guys make a perfect band.
6. I love DT, i love their decisions, i love current lineup and i know they're perfect.
7. If they're that bad then start listening to A7X, 1D or bieber.  :xbones
