What the fuck did I just listen to? Illumination theory has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of progressive music ever written. The ending just made an old-ass man weep like a baby.

Wasn't Enigma Machine supposed to have a bass solo?

I was wondering that too. The song itself was still very epic, 10/10, but I was like "Where is my bass solo?" :P

Just wanted to say that the easter egg gives me some "The Raven That Refused To Sing" vibes, in best of ways, absolutely haunting.

EDIT: Can't wait for my 2LP copy to arrive :caffeine:

I'm going to hold off putting my full confidence in what I'm about to say next. But it might be true. I still need to digest about 3 more songs on the record. And of course time will tell. But here it is:

Dream Theater is the best DT album.

I'm very tempted to agree with you. I think this album might be the band's Moving Picture or The Dark Side of the Moon.

Where I, the Cosmic Sea

Man, the easter egg is great... can't believe they will throw it away, it deserves a full song at least
Anyone who have a opportunity to talk to the members of the band, please tell them to not just throw away that beautiful piece.

They didn't throw anything away. The easter egg ends the last song, and it's gonna be on this recording forever.

This triggered snare is awful. At least it's not I&W bad, but it's really bad sounding.

For me, it's all about that "first impact", like with Enemy Inside or IT.  Or like the first four of SC.  :metal :metal  I'll give all the other songs a chance to grow on me with the CD.  Time and place and mindset makes a difference in making a song "click".  That just didn't happen with me with ADTOE, and I gave it several spins.

I honestly had no problem with it... When I listen to Dream Theater, I hear great music. I don't try to hear snare sounds.

I love it. Can't wait to here the CD. FAS and STR still have a little growing to do on me but the rest has everything that I love about DT. IT will quickly move into my Top 5 and may or may not challenge ACOS for the # 2 spot. TDOE is my #1 and will probably never be topped.

I'm happy. Spent most of the last 5 hrs listening to the stream.

Along For the Ride definitely sounds better in context.

My only gripe with the entire album is still JR's moog solo in that song coming in a 16th late.

I defy anyone to come up with ONE quote that proves that the snare is triggered. It's not.

Wait, just so we're clear..."The Dance Of Eternity" is your top DT song?

Still reeling from my one spin, anxious to gtfo of work and head home. It's hovering in the top 4 area for me along with I&W, SDOIT, and SFAM. That's a hell of a statement for one spin.

At 3:30 on Illumination Theory how does Mangini play toms and snare at the same time? Maybe they are not toms but something else. And maybe it is not as amazing as it sounds to non drummer. But he is mixing in a few tom hits with what I would guess to be a two handed snare roll? I don't know. Someone explain.

James sounds amazing here, and oh shit, big surprise, it only lasts like 30 seconds, then its back to more disjointed nonsense. This song makes no sense, whatsoever.

This i agree, great moments here but they don't last much.

I'm pretty sure the band said they were done doing that.

*snip*

I actually really rather like that orchestral section - it's one of the handful of things I like about the album. What really would've been cool is if they had devoted one entire track to something more of that bent. It could've had JP playing classical guitar, JR on the piano, JM on upright or something, and they could just play an orchestral piece. Now that would've been groundbreaking for them.

I've listen to it twice during the day, on ear buds. Came back home, my wife is gone with our oldest one for 2 days, and I'm with our younger one, she's 17 and like pretty much all I'm listening to.

I hooked my laptop on our best sound system, and gave it a go.

Well she likes it as much as I do, she found that it was a little bit on the "smooth" side for her  :yarr

It is not the CD and the sound was really big the way I did set it. the one she likes the most ? IT" The one she doesn't get is EM (she said there is no words, no singing  :rollin

I won't rank the songs and the album amognts the others. But we both enjoyed it, and this will be most probaly at top 5.

A lot has been said saying that most of the songs are a "collage", give them some more try, may be you'll get it.

There are actually 2 very small bass solos in the song, one at 3:03, that other at 3:33

Is that you, Thiago?

Not Thiago.  But based on his past forum history, and the tone of that post, his posting status and Thiago's are now the same.  Insulting the band and their fans in a post is never acceptable here, and making the post long and detailed to try to disguise the blatant insults does not somehow make it better.

The Easter Egg reminds me of Lost Keys by Tool.

It also reminds me of an idea I had to finish my album. Intervals and all. Plus only a semitone out :P

Here's a comment that actually applies to the last two albums: Has anyone noticed that there aren't really any "polymeters" or whatever you might call them, anymore? What I mean is, the drums will play some 5/8 while the others play a 3/4 or something. Ib always loved that about DT's music, but it seems it got kinda lost with MP's departure.
In general actually I would say that DT's music has gotten rhythmically simpler since the split.

That may be true - and I have no way of detecting polyrhythms - but is it such a bad thing if there are less of them?

Oh, hands down yes. He sounds a lot like his solo records, in which he usually sounded a ton better than on DT records.
