Quick poll to help me with a miscommunication issue
« on: September 03, 2013, 04:22:09 PM »
I just need a little help from my fellow-DTFers to vet out a recent miscommunication issue.  I won't give away my place in scenario.  I have listed two possible meanings - and I know there could be others, but I wanted to know which of the two options was most likely the meaning of the last statement in the following simple scenario.  I also know that there is not much context, but I wanted it to be evaluated at face value.

Person 1 was planning to meet up with Person 2 and few others for an all-day outing, and expressed plans to go.  A couple of days passed without discussion, but then Person 1 could not go due to other priorities.  So the following quick IM conversation took place, but quickly spiraled out-of-control over the meaning of "Hope you change your mind".

Person 1:  I am not going to go to the gathering tomorrow.
Person 2: Sorry you are not going.  Hope you change your mind.

I don't see any sort of context at all (given the information) that would lead to a thought of P2 wanting to be with P1. It could be based on anything...it could mean absolutely nothing and was a comment thrown to the wind to be polite.

Yeah, I know.  Unfortunately this was a quick IM conversation that had little information to go with it - which is one reason I don't like to rely on IM conversations when It would be possible to talk.  It really was almost this simple, I will edit to give just a little more context.

It's too vague to really give you an answer without a background about this relationship to this point.

Yep, I get it... that is part of the point about how miscommunications happen via IM/texting with little opportunity for context.  I just was wondering if you walked in on the conversation, which of the two would be a more likely meaning with just this information.  This may not work out, but thanks for the feedback.

I think it means "hope you change your mind." Trying to read more into it isn't going to help.

 :lol Yep....that's the ticket.

Honestly, it sounds like person #2 was really hoping person #1 would be there.

Person 2 would have sent person 1 pics of their tits/dick if they were interested in a relationship.

If I may, I would like to describe my reasoning for the answer I have chosen with a brief metaphor.

So, there's this scenario where there are two people at a crowded shopping mall, and both approach a small ice cream shop at about the same time. Person #1 stops walking forward for a moment and says to person #2, "go ahead" while motioning one hand toward the line inside the shop. Person #2 says "Thanks  :)".

What is the more likely meaning of "go ahead" ?

A. I'm in no rush, you may enter the line for ice cream before me, I don't mind.
B. HOLY CRAP ARE YOU JOHN PETRUCCI, THE KEYBOARDIST OF THE BEACH BOYS???

I got nothing to offer.  Just posting here as this has the makings of an epic thread.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Hope you change your mind.

So, you're saying you want to be with Ham?  And by that, I mean you're going to eat bacon for breakfast tomorrow?

Y'know, whenever I'm taking a break at work and thinking that DTF is a perfectly SFW site for a quick diversion, Chino is always there to remind me that I probably shouldn't be browsing DTF from the office lol
